Article Above
At USA Today, Chris Woodyard is reporting, ahead of the offical Elon Musk reveal, that the "D" is a very fast version of the Tesla Model S sedan, with all-wheel-drive. Other new information: Tesla will offer a "suite of driver aid and safety features." Evidently, Tesla's will be able to "read" speed limit signs and adjust speed accordingly!
About what I was expecting (please note that this is not confirmed by Tesla yet)
Is there a live stream somewhere?

"Fitting into some of the rumors, speculation and a car spotted a few days ago, Tesla is rolling out new all-wheel drive equipped versions of its Model S The top of the line dual-motor equipped P85D has a measured 0 - 60 time of 3.2 seconds, which should put it among the fastest sedans ever when it starts shipping in December. According to Musk, the system is a "huge improvement" that actually adds efficiency over a single motor -- about 10 miles in range per charge."

"Tesla is going to "push the limit" on what's legally allowed for self-driving cars. These new models can park themselves, and even (while on private property) summon the car, and it will slowly drive to where you are, or park itself in the garage! This is all driven by the ultrasonic sensors on the new cars, although he's not ready to call the autopilot features autonomous just yet."

My take - this car makes me all giddy inside. 691hp!?! 0-60 in 3.2 sec!?! I mean, sure it weighs nearly 5k pounds, but...damn.

I remember seeing a dyno run of a Model S once before, and that dyno was reading that high.

I'll try to dig up that info.

EDIT: After looking back over it, the Model S uses a reduction gear, which operates as the final drive, which in this case is 9.73:1

Multiply that by torque at the wheels, which on the RWD model is 443 lb.-ft., so you would get ridiculous amounts of torque. Now you get that much power (and more) to all 4 wheels.

Motor at the front and rear....

I guess you could call that....

...a Double D.

YEEAAAAHHHH...!

I'd like an in-depth look at how sophisticated their controller is. Imagine all that torque and no wheelspin. It's going to be like riding The Incredible Hulk coaster, only faster.

This is awesome news! It is a bit of a heavyweight, but we won't see that problem in the future as battery technology improves.

Can't wait to drive this if GT6 gets this car before any other game.

The "Something else" was Auto Pilot.

The "something else" at tonight's Tesla event is Auto Pilot, a new system that combines a forward facing camera and 12 sensors that see 16 feet in every direction and provide a 360-degree view the surroundings. The camera does everything from seeing other cars to reading speed limit signs. Normal fare for luxury cars. Except it will also do a lane change for you just by pressing the turn signal stalk.

The sensors keep track of vehicles around you and the lanes in the road. One section of the course is a low-speed slalom; a handful of S turns in a row. The driver enables cruise control, takes his hands off the wheel, and it seamlessly turns left and right and left again, all at around 25 mph – which it automatically slowed for after recognized the speed sign –without any input from the guy in the driver's seat.

Then we get up to a lane change area. He simply applies the left signal and the sensors – which already know there are no vehicles around, because it's constantly monitoring the surroundings – slowly slips into the left lane without any input from the driver. That's the "wow" feature for tonight, and Musk sees it getting better.

"When [Auto Pilot rolls out] it will have the most sophisticated driver assistant functions of any vehicle on the road," says Musk. And the ability to continually tweak the programming through over-the-air updates means it will improve over time. This puts Tesla up to par with the Germans and the Japanese, but takes it a step further with the lane change feature. And at this point, would you expect anything less from Tesla?

WOT AUTOPLOIT IZ??

I need one.

When there already needs to be stickers on the dash saying "warning, cruise control does not steering the vehicle" I can only see this going totally smoothly...

They should fill that frunk space with an ultracapacitor bank for an extra juice boost when you floor it. NAWSSSS

Anyone check the stock market today? I guess people are disappointed it's not an entirely new model. I thought with all this autonomous-like driving stuff it would go up. Guess I was wrong.

While I'm still skeptical of autonomous driving, I am very interested in the way Tesla will be using the technology.

You're not making the big money unless you have an SUV. Don't ask; that's just the way it is.

The stats on the P85D are incredible; I would love the chance to drive one and see how it compares to other fast sedans.

With this though, I've gotta say:

I really want the D.
