The AI are moronic punters

Since seeing the complaints about AI, I've begun to pay closer attention to how they behave in relation to my car. And, in my experience, the AI seems pretty adaptive. I've noticed them swerve to avoid door-to-door contact. I've also heard them slamming on their brakes behind me to avoid punting me at low speed corners. The AI has moved over attempting to block my path (in regular races as well as license tests) and then self-corrected when they realized I was overtaking them too quickly for a successful block.

I've seen the AI do some goofy things as well at times. But, the smart moves far outway the blockhead things so far.

Exactly this. ^^^^

I'm being continually spun out by idiot AI drivers.
I was cursing my luck at how it's "always me" who spins out after a minor collision/brush. It's heartening to learn I'm not the only one.

It's pretty much impossible to pass someone on the inside of a corner, which is of course one of the most common methods of passing in racing. The AI cars will just drive straight into you. When you can't execute common racing maneuvers, about the only option left it to modify your car to the point where the race isn't even competitive any more.

How come I'm hearing that the AI sucks in general, but I've yet to have an AI crash into me or bump into each other willy nilly? The AI was epically good in the advanced tarmac rally I just did.

I find it easy enough to disrupt them. The AI takes a generic driving line and I use that to my advantage. I fall in behind them long enough to bump the rear end and I hit L3 to honk the horn. Some AI drivers freak out and vere off course.

Although I am aware this is an old post, I just wanted to ask if there is a video around of this. It sounds blooming hilarious!

There is no AI in the license and special events (except the AMG challenge where the cars aren't racing you and will move out the way to let you overtake)

In the normal races the AI has been fine with me. A lot better than any previous incarnation. I'd go as far as to say it's a massive step forward. They'll yield the line on an overtake now. That's never happened before.

I have no idea how either of them passed QA

Based on my knowledge of Japanese culture i've concluded that GT5's QA people were off there tits on sake, comparing girls underwear they had just bought from a vending machine when they were supposed to be checking for problems.

It gets worse the harder it gets you go in front so they ram you from behind or your side by side your tail to their nose and they turn into you and spin you, cant stand it

I bet any one of you who are complaining about the AI couldn't properly explain how to yeild to other racers on a track.

I'm sure I'm not any good at it either, but I try my best and the AI seems responsive to such driving.

Sometimes the AI is good, but sometimes they just drive into the back of you. I was on La Sarthe earlier, leading on the straight heading down to Mulsanne and the 2nd place 330 (who was much faster than me on the straights) just drove straight into the back of my unbalanced car and I spun out.

I've just been trying the NASCAR championship in the Extreme Series. The Daytona race just seems impossible. I've done possibly 60 odd laps trying to complete the race but due to the AI thinking they can just barge their way onto the racing line, I've yet to finish higher than last.

Someone on page 1 of this thread said the AI is ruining the game and I wholeheartedly agree.

There are some moments when the AI behaves properly. Unfortunately, it doesn't take much to ruin the whole racing experience, and it seems like at least once in every race the AI will try to do something dumb and ram me/spin me out/brake check/something.

It's just frustrating. The driving is so good, but either I'm miles ahead and basically time trialling, or I'm stuck in the middle of this pack of goons and it doesn't matter how good the driving is because I'm trying not to die.

I try not to complain as I've done my share of crashing into the AI over the years.

Especially in the Ferrari race at monza. Just push everybody into an 11 supercar pile up while you sneak by at the first chicane

Oh God yes. the nascar race was horrible. They should program pain into the AI so they'll feel it when I grudgingly crash into them the next race.

As much as I praised the AI in my previous post in this thread, I was ready to scream at them 10 minutes ago when I had to restart a supercar race at High Speed Ring six times before I managed to get more than a few hundred meters without being spun out by the cars behind :). Eventually I just let several of them get by, took the outside lane and passed most of them in the first turn.

I seem to recall that happening in an earlier race at High Speed Ring as well (perhaps not helped by the fact that I stink at getting a good start without traction control enabled, I usually get overtaken by a couple of AI drivers at the start of races), so I'm guessing there are some tracks or circumstances on some tracks where the AI is far less impressive than I've otherwise felt it's been most of the time.

AI, you mean the slow pokes on train-tracks.

Actually, I don't even think even children are as stupid as GT5s AI.

It's either that or the demons from GRID

Oh yea OP, I agree. Is it that hard to make it so the AI doesn't turn into you but instead drives on the side. I hate these cars being on rails so they don't give any room to you. None!

I actually need to thank the AI for helping me win one race. It helped me with the Supercar festival race at Daytona. I wasnt too worried about the field but there was a Veyron. I was in a chrome Lamborghini LP 640. Well the Veyron got stuck behind a '69 vette and was pushing him for about 3/4ths of a lap. I had to watch the replay a few times because I couldnt figure out how the Veyron managed to get so far behind the pack.

I would say for me, the AI is quite good. I almost never been pitted (maybe 4 times tops) I try my hardest to be smooth and clean even in A-Spec so I think that the AI changes for the different ways you can race, clean, high pressure, ramming, etc.

They can be quite dumb though, but doesnt matter to me, Its still a challenge reguardless. So I'm happy with GT5.

I just tried the Nascar event and it's so bad I doubt I'll ever run the event again. As you said the AI pit you time after time. It is the worst at Daytona. I tried this 5 or 6 times and never got past 2 laps before they spun me out.

Could anybody tell me, why AI with 145 HP WV Golf 2001 overtaking my stock 245 HP Silvia S15 on long straight?

And things like this happens all the time

I hate to say it but forzas AI is much, much better in my experience. It's a shame because I really like this game but it can be just so frustrating at times. It's almost impossible to have a clean close race on any of the tight tracks. The wider more open tracks are ok though.

The CPU racers are horrible, no doubt about it. And I refuse to call it "AI" because there is nothing "intelligent" about it.

I cannot believe over 5 versions of this game, that this has barely improved. If at all. But I guess that's why it's called a Driving Simulator, because it sure as hell isn't simulating Racing. At all.

TBH, i think the AI on GT5 is brilliant compared to other sim titles like rFactor and Forza 3. The AI on Forza 3 is just horrible. Will swerve in front of me in the braking zone so that i run into them or they will barrel into a hairpin corner at 200 MPH and absolutely slam me.
rFactor's AI rides on rails. If i get next to them, they just drive into me.

If I battle the AI on GT5, it feels like a battle. I've been in front of the AI on a straight where they were gaining. I swerved over and over and the AI was extremely responsive to swerve into the open area to try to overtake.
I went into corners next to the AI and they give me enough room on the inside to execute a proper overtaking line.

To the people who are saying the AI PITs them, try looking at the replay. Most of the time, it is you driving your back end into their nose. Sometimes, the programming is bugged and the AI thinks the farthest back part of your car is around your quarter panel, so when they try to pull in, the programming tells them to pull in to your fuel tank.

BUT, i haven't found any big problems with the AI. If there is buggy programming in the AI, then reporting it to Kaz might help PD develop a patch for it.

Don't start it. AI in Forza & PGR destroys GT5 AI like A-bomb droped on the head of mouse.

The main reason - it could keep with you from start to finish without any tricks, catch and power ups and so on. Just driving same as you car

Nope, I'll definitely agree with NOS Waster that rFactor AI is terrible (though it might have been better for certain mods if they've included custom AI files, I started playing a bit of rFactor again a few months ago, but otherwise it's been a couple of years since the last time). Far worse than the otherwise typically pretty good AI in the various ISI engine sims that came both before and after.

Aye the AI is quite crap, they drive slow brake checking you at every corner, stick to their line and if you're in the way? too bad because they have indestructable tank cars and they will drive through you, not even an attempt to avoid.

Rfactors AI isnt great, but the cars do drive fast, they don't brake check you and they will try to avoid you if you brake early or crash. So i cant see how GT5 AI can really compare to that.

It would be nice if we could actually spin out the AI cars as easily as they can spin us out. Fair is fair, they can PITT me into the wall with minimal effort but I can barely put them into the dirt? Annoying!

The AI seem to be 10 ton concrete barriers that are unmovable, drive on rails, slow to a snails pace around corners, and go in 4x4 mode and plow you like a bulldozer.

I agree with many people here. The AIs are demons! When I was doing the beginner TopGear Challenge in the VW bus, I felt like I was in some sort of space invaders game. I had to constantly dodge all the cones that the AIs used as projectiles. Cause if you don't dodge them you be getting a gray screen of death.

I must be playing a completely different game than you guys, because that hasn't been my experience at all, and I have even spun out a few of the AI contenders.
