the down sides of the playstation 2

The down side of the slim PS2 is that it does not support the HDD. If you want to run HDLoader or you are that only person who plays FFXI, then you have to get the original PS2 models.

Other than that, the slim PS2 is just as good as the last revision of the original PS2. Progressive scan DVD playback, DVD-/+R and -/+RW support, IR remote port, and for the slim PS2, a built in network adapter.

I sold my old PS2 and bought the slim "PSTwo", because my PS2 didn't have:

a)Progressive Scan - This was important, because my newer games like NBA 2K5 and GT4 supported it.

b)Network Adapter - To add this to my PS2, the Sony one would've cost me $40. I wanted it, since GT4 was supposed to have supported online. I still use it for downloading updates for my A/R. :D I'd like to play 2K5 online in the near-future.

I also like its' portable size, as I take my PS2 and GameCube, over to my friends houses all the time.

As for the new slimline's drawbacks, I don't like the new lid. Pain in the a** to get the discs in/out. Also, they eliminated the i-link thingy. I wasn't too happy about that. :grumpy:

Maybe its just me but should this thread not be in the "Playstation 2" section.

I prefer the looks of the older PS2 especially round the USB ports

I agree.

The Slim PS2 seems to get a lot hotter than the fatter one, it just feels better to have the fatter machine because of that.

I've heard so many people complain about the overheating, but I haven't encountered that at all....... then again, I haven't touched my PSTwo since like April or May. :indiff: It gets little warm, but it was no worse than my "PS2".

The slim line one dont have a fan does it?
I got a conflicting report on that one. First, I heard it didn't. When I researched it little bit, I found couple of sites that said it did.

yeah...I've also heard people saying it has a impeller fan..but I don't hear/see one...So I'm sticking with no, and a electronic device that does anykind of proc'ing without a fan..scares me..It really does...

PS..Nerdy friend of mine lost his fat Ps2 and bought a slim, and he says he can only play GTA:SA for about 3 hours till he has to turn his ps2 off because the plastic is warm..Now I don't know how thick the plastic is on the ps2, but I know plastic isn't a great conductor of heat, so if IT'S warn its got to be cooking inside.

Hmmmm sony are kinda dumb to not put a fan in when they know some games need to last some time (GT4 for example with all the endurance racing) The 'fat' PS2 was all good, i dunno why they bothered with the slimline one to be honest :S

I think the new design were supposedly cheaper to make, which saves them money. Besides, Driftster said that PSTwo get "warm" after three hours of GTA:SA. Warm is not overheating. I'm sure any consoles I have will get "warm" after three hours of play, and I wouldn't turn it off just because it's warm. I don't know what the big deal is.....

You have to understand about the progressive-scan "upgrade" that later PS2's got... that was for DVDs only. Early PS2's couldn't play DVDs in pro-scan, the newer ones could. If you don't watch DVDs on your PS2, then this upgrade is worthless to you. Pro-scan games will work on any PS2, even launch units.

Oh, I know.. I was referring to a6m5's post, when he said he wanted a newer PS2 in order to play pro-scan games. That's a waste of $150 bucks right there, since his old PS2 will play them just as well.

If you want a 'big' on ebecause of heat and are British ask Famine for one :dopey:

Or really ask someone who knows to recommend one on Ebay to buy and do it up.

That's what I thought, so I bought component cables for it, but did not work. I tried it on my PSTwo, BAM!, progressive scan! Besides, progressive scan wasn't the only reason why I traded up. ;)
