Talent tends to show itself quickly, and JEV hasn't really demonstrated himself to be a top-notch driver. If he had, he would have been promoted already and we would be having this discussion about Ricciardo.

He has talent (imo) but he's consistently pretty-good with not much deviation from that. No stellar days, no really bad days. A "safe pair of hands", I can see some team bosses going for that (especially for JEV's sponsorship) but just not right now. It's a shame because he seems a nice guy, but how well do they ever do in F1? :)
 
You never know - Sauber could pick him up. I know van der Garde is perpetually linked to the seat, but I find it telling that Sauber confirmed Ericsson before they did van der Garde (if they ever took him).
 
Red bull would be insane to not promote Sainz imo, domination of F3.5 in rookie year surely is a good enough job.
 
I don't know who it is, but someone with the Twitter handle "sniffermedia" reckons as many as four current Formula 1 drivers could be off to the WEC next year.

I'm guessing it would be Button, Kobayashi, Vergne and Chilton.

Not sure how Sutil could somehow survive till next season though.

Chances are Redbull will Loan Vergne to the Nissan LMP1 Squad and probably taking Buemi from Toyota to Nissan, with Kobayashi probably taking that Toyota spot if it happens.

Button has made no secret he will be doing WEC after F1 but this Alonso business is really dragging on maybe it will be him that goes to WEC instead for a Gap year or something.

Can't see Chilton getting anything good in WEC as they are all factory teams who care little for pay drivers.
 
I don't think any WEC team would be knocking on Sutil's door with a contract, and I don't think Sauber will retain him. His stay in F1 was over the first time he left the sport due to no seat.
 
Sutil has acutally a contract for sauber in 2015.
He said that in an interview on RTL (german television), but he doesn't know what will happen next year. (if he stays and drives or if he will be replaced)

Is there any chance of Sutil emulating Glock and di Resta and going to DTM?
 
I don't see why not. They like having F1 drivers in their series.

It make their regular runners look good.

I see no reason for Buemi to leave Toyota in their current state. Neither do I see Toyota letting Buemi go when he's, in my opinion, their best current driver.

What about Toyota keeping Buemi and returning to F1 in 2016/7? I'm surprised that rumour hasn't been started yet. So I'm starting it. :D

Chilton isn't very good relative to F1 drivers, but in absolute terms he is still a fairly handy driver. You don't occasionally out-qualify Bianchi, claim pole positions in GP2 and win feature races in GP2 if you are rubbish. Additionally, he may find his calling in other disciplines. Some drivers who were far far worse than Chilton in single seaters have become exceptional in other disciplines (see Bruno Spengler, Max Buhk etc.).

That said, I'd be surprised if he got a factory LMP1 drive for next year. I think he would have to prove himself in LMP2 or at Rebellion first. I think more likely, he'd have a better shot at getting a seat at Aston Martin. Max is British if that counts for anything, and he's almost certainly a better driver than Darryl O'Young.

I'd say that Davidson, Buemi and Nakajima have clearly separated themselves from the other Toyota drivers over the last 2 years. It would be a huge blow for Toyota to lose any of the three, especially with Sarrazin and Lapierre rumoured to be moving to Nissan. Nico and Stephane are certainly replaceable, but you don't want too much driver turnover going into another crucial Le Mans race.

If Jean-Eric Vergne is not available, Sutil might be an adequate choice for Haas.

It's questionable as to whether he had one in the first place - he has been blowing his own trumpet for years.
 
Contracts just aren't worth the paper they are printed on these days... If it's not the team signing up 4 drivers for 2 cars, it's drivers signing up to race for 2 team in the same season. I hope it gets sorted cleanly, but something tells me it will go on a while...

On the move itself, I'm really glad that Nasr has got a drive. He wasn't likely to get a seat from either Massa or Bottas, but he has impressed in his Friday outings. I would say he has improved in GP2 this season as well, taking some decent race wins along with maintaining some of that impressive early 2013 consistency. Proof that a driver can bring money to a team and be a decent driver.

Meanwhile Jacques Villeneuve as diplomatic as usual: "Alonso will only bring confusion at McLaren and honestly I can't understand Honda's choice. We've already seen it at Ferrari, Alonso is the best driver but his eagerness to win ruins the harmony of the team. Honda needs a lot of development next season and I'm not so sure if Alonso will be able to accept that. We're seeing that this year and the McLaren situation in 2015 could be even worse."
