Talent tends to show itself quickly, and JEV hasn't really demonstrated himself to be a top-notch driver. If he had, he would have been promoted already and we would be having this discussion about Ricciardo.
He has talent (imo) but he's consistently pretty-good with not much deviation from that. No stellar days, no really bad days. A "safe pair of hands", I can see some team bosses going for that (especially for JEV's sponsorship) but just not right now. It's a shame because he seems a nice guy, but how well do they ever do in F1?
