I keep watching Naruto because it's a habit and doesn't take much time (although getting caught up initially was a huge investment...)
As it goes on (and on and on...) I feel like we don't get enough of a balance of screen time for all the different characters, so the relationships are becoming rather shallow and overly dependent on events now in the distant past. I guess that's natural since they've introduced so many characters over the years. And the pacing has never been great, too many episodes where almost nothing happens, or single battles stretched out over multiple episodes.
But overall Naruto has been pretty good, and still has some great moments. It's one of the dangers of starting an anime based on an ongoing manga, but I wish the whole series to date could have been compressed into 100-150 episodes.
Oh, and I definitely don't watch Naruto just for Sakura and the other female characters. I was always happy to see the dynamics between Shikamaru and Choji, the dog-guy Kiba and the bug-guy Shino, the pervy-sage Jiraya checking out the ladies at the hot springs, Kakashi staying cool but obsessing over Jiraya's dirty books, Guy-sensei and fuzzy eyebrows, etc., etc. There were a whole cast of characters that were fun to watch. Hardly ever see most of them any more...
And anyone else think that all the female characters have some essential weakness written into them? What's up with that?
