What actually pissed me off the most was the fact it failed to do anything surprising. And the irony is, that in itself isn't surprising; it's an official anime, so the heroes are expected to kill the enemies to death for the entire thing. But even most anime like this try to stick a good twist in somewhere. This didn't. Probably because the twist is already there...and yet it sort of isn't, because it's just girls shooting guns. Which we've seen before. Girls shooting airplanes, less so, but that's just annoying because it means they're even willing to bring those into it.
Mind you, the mains could have done something out of the water (pardon the pun) too. They didn't do this, either. Fubuki is your basic plain hero, so there's nothing really there to make her special in any way. Plus, her motivation is weak and obvious. The other mains, Akagi and Kaga, seem destined to be Mary Sues.
The other lolis (yes, that's what they are. Ships maybe, but they don't even feel like them, they feel like girls with guns stuck to themselves) are just your basic character archetypes. Mutsuki actually looks alright but spoiled it by having an utterly headache inducing voice. That didn't stop me from liking Nia Teppelin but she did at least stop hers for a good while. Mutsuki shows no sign of that. Yuudachi seems literally pointless, Sendai is a tsundere (and looks sickeningly like Nitori), Naka is an Idolmaster and Jintsuu looks like Reiuji Utsuho.
And the rest - the ones who the Kantai Collection faithful like most of all, I understand - aren't much better. Nagato, though, might actually have been the best character I saw, perhaps because she looked and sounded strangely like Hyuga Kojiro (with stupid pointy things) in my eyes. Hyuga Kojiro is male, of course. That's not so good. And her almost silent colleague Mutsu just looks like Miko. (There were two in Murasa's outfit as well but one of them sounded emotionless, so IDK)
Of course, I have to talk about the one character I think is any good from Kantai Collection, Atago. ...Except she was in all of one shot, which started with...her tits. Yes, of course, they're the main attraction. New viewers aren't supposed to know that though...so don't make it blindingly obvious. Way to ruin your one real shot at glory. Hers was also the only blatant shot which will both disappoint some people I know on Tumblr and make her look a total fanservice incarnate. Also from what little I even caught of her voice it sounded unlike what my admittedly inexperienced mind would think of her.
I'm afraid I can't give a fair evaluation of Kongou (or anyone sharing her uniform), since I spent my time shouting "**** OFF!" at her when she came onto the screen. I hate, hate, hate Kongou. It's not hard to guess why.
Mind you, at least they didn't show Shimakaze in any real capacity. Sadly I notice on MAL she is listed as a 'main', which leaves this series truly ****ed. If they'd shown her too well I'd have found a way to give this a 0, believe me.
And besides, why aren't we following these big names? Surely they're the ones the fans want really...I think. Why follow the loli bunch, and the hipster plane fliers? Doing that just makes this a high school anime with added basic action. At least what few tits get shown have been placed separately here.
The Abyssals looked alright if I'm honest. I mean, I quite want one of those. Unfortunately the woman behind them looked all too close to Remilia Scarlet, meaning they can't even make original enemies.
The one positive I can come up with is that, for very obvious reasons, this would be a gold mine for montage parodies. I mean, there was one actual 'rip in pieces' moment and another moment where I actually stopped and played the sad violins Though I'd rather I didn't support it in anyway no matter how good those could end up being. Perish the thought...
So it gets the 1 it deserves. It was probably as bad as I expected, really. Just, not in the way I thought.
Right. Review over. Dislike enhanced. I never have to touch it again.
