Many english dubs are terrible... accent or not... butchered nuance in the dialogues... unsuitable voice actors... it's only when you get to Ghibli-Disney level dubbing that it becomes un-noticeable... though with Valley of the Wind, my favorite dub actress did the original (non-Disney) English dub... which is impossible to find nowadays (came out on VHS/Laser)... by the same studio that did the original Canadian/US Ranma 1/2 dubs (which, IMHO, had the best Nabiki dub... ever).

Of course, Studio Ghibli would prefer you watch the new "Disney" version, because the original English dub butchered parts of the story.
 
I tend to listen to dub based on location. Japan = Japanese, foreign = the country's language.
 
The only dub that I can bare is the English dub for Ghost Stories...though I don't think that would could since it's kind of an 'official' abridged thingie. :dopey:

also i agree with the guy who talked about pronunciation i watched a couple episodes of the persona 4 dub and the way they said 'yookeekoh' and 'yohsookay' was kinda cringey lol

That Chaos Dragon thing looked mediocre from the very start. I didn't expect much (what with Urobuchi on the project and all) but it was even worse than I could have imagined. The demon god of CG really let out his wrath on this one. I found out that all anime stories follow a central formula now (according to Japanese production committees):

Variable S, representing a production, is equivalent to
(xy-y)/z + G + A

where x=a young male, y=a young female who obviously likes the male but dies early on, and z=a supposedly undefeatable enemy (which obviously isn't). G and A are the two interesting factors. G is the Urobuchi factor, named so because the existence of Gen on the production team makes a production better no matter if the writing is actually good or not. A is the animation factor, which has varying values depending on the studio performing the bulk of the work. For example, A-1 would have a value of 1, while less well known institutions such as feel. have lower values to be used in the function.

x, y, z, and G are all true/false values, corresponding to the existence of each of their respective elements. Here's an example-- if x makes up a central component of the narrative, then the value is 1. If not, then 0. Note how if z is false then the function would cease to work, as undefined values cannot be used by production committees.

I should really go back to studying real Calculus.

This. Altough I watched my biiiig share of dubs back in the anime-only-at-tv days, but if I talk about dubs in here im gonna be like

Speaking of dubs I looked at dubs for Fate/zero and they're actually not that bad. But it still feels butchered. Though I'm liking Saber's VA :S

Space Brothers moves so slow they need to do week-by-week recaps for the watchers who probably don't watch every single episode.

That being said, that shouldn't stop you from watching it. Just skip the brief recaps, OP and EDs!

Oh yeah, I remember those. Also remember it moves very slow. Sort of why it took me a long time to finish it and suddenly gives use to those impromptu recaps.

In all fairness, Lain actually give shows a try on his own before deciding that rather than hearing our thoughts and stating he never needed to watch it to know whether it was good or not.

In my honest opinion, I think that gives him way more merit to say a show isn't good. It's reasonable, logical, and fair.

Worst dub I've ever heard: Burst Angel.
Show sounded like it was done in Texas and just didn't make sense at all. 2nd to that was Elfen Lied. Ahhhhh Animax, we didn't mind subbed stuff in little old South Africa though Black Lagoon was perfect.


I want to watch Food Wars.
My taste in anime is rubbish :D
 
My line of thinking is that 90% of anything sucks, 10% is good. Games, music, movies, anime, etc. With some experience, you can tell from a glance that something probably isn't worth your time. But the keyword there is probably... there's always a chance you could be wrong. For instance, I once thought Angel Beats wasn't worth my time, but I decided to prove it by giving it my time... and it turned out my initial impression was way off (even if Angel Beats does have its fair share of problems).

But anyway, as for Space Brothers... I prefer shorter shows, but I make exceptions if a show appeals to me. I don't see show length as being a particularly great reason to not watch a show. Sure, they take longer to finish... but if the show's great, is that really a bad thing? The main thing about shows with high episode counts is they make me wary of the cohesiveness of the story... was the story actually planned to go on that long? Is it full of garbage filler? Or perhaps due to the show's success, they decided to come up with some contrived way to keep the story going?

As far as dub v. sub, I'll watch whatever I can get my hands on. If it's a dub and it turns out to be atrocious, I'll switch to sub if I can. Though I find that awful dubs usually accompany source material that isn't exactly great itself.

I did it ten years ago.

As for what I said about Lain's punchline, it's got literally nothing to do with if he or I give shows a go. I called it a punchline for a reason.

But as I said, more power to you.
 
My general rule is that if people are still talking about it a year or two down the line, it might just be worth be checking out. If it was your standard trash it'd likely have cancelled out into the background szyslak radiation by then.

Case in point: Remember Oreimo? That was all over the place. Now all you hear about it is in occasional "How Can My x Be This x" gags people make. Why? Because it's trash. Of course, in that case you can tell pretty easily it's gonna be trash. It's called "How Can My Little Sister Be This Cute", but when you come across an anime with a name like Neon Genesis Evangelion or whatever, the name doesn't tell you as much. The fact that Evangelion still comes up as much as it does twenty years down the line tells one a lot.

On a side note, a friend showed be some fight scenes from the 2014 FSN. No wonder they call it Unlimited Budget Works; the animation is great.

By the way, if someone calls you a weeaboo just based on your name, is that an insult?
 
Depends. If your name is Kobayashi Akira, and that's there grounds for calling you a weaboo, that's racism. If your name is Super! Lucky☆Star Otaku D Go!!, then weaboo is probably an apt description.
 
I tend to watch both sub and dub versions. I watch sub first, give it a break, then go to dub. It's like a different show most of the time.

I honestly feel Kara no Kyoukai looks better, but that's obviously my opinion..
 
As lame as its description was, I'll be watching Charlotte. If I ever get back to the shows I haven't finished/started. Backlog life for me.
 
Well, I finished Shirobako now. I liked it,once you get past learning the industry jargon, it's a good show plus it ended nicely. A season 2 would be nice :p

Also, I read that the first episode of Third Aerial Girls Squad may get an OVA. Pretty interesting I say, if it's good then I suppose it should deserve it's own adaptation. An adaption to an anime from an anime about anime making. Wow, imagine that :lol:

In other news, I was told to watch Tonari no Kaibatsu-kun from one of my mates. Then I saw Demo's review for it. Guess I know what I'm watching tomorrow.


In the other OTHER news segment of this post, I think I may watch Kiniro Mosaic just for its Engrish :D
