Drop all the trash you are watching (specially Wangan Midnight, it sucks) and watch Madoka. Disregard the cuteness... oh wait, you dont mind it. Watch it, it'll blow your mind.

It really won't. Well, it might, but that's subjective I guess. Personally I can't see what's so special about it.

Personally I can't see what's so special about it.

It has a totally unique portrayal of the normally generic Japanese high/middle school... all glass walls... wonder what that means?

But no, seriously, my above post saying "it won't blow your mind" was treed by a few minutes by Cano's "it'll blow your mind", so for me it's nice to hear that I'm not the only one that thinks Madoka's maybe nice but not spectacular.

And welcome to the anime thread, or welcome back as the case may be, I've only been around here for what, half a year? Memory fails.

That is one thing that was interesting, all the futuristic and post-modern architecture everywhere. And it did sort of present the whole 'magical-girl' genre in a bit of a different way, but the characters, plot and dialogue just seemed a bit bland and stereotypical to me. Not my kind of show, I guess.

And thanks, it's been quite a long time since I've checked back or posted here.

As it so happens, I'm trying to watch Wangan Midnight at the moment, like Vanishing Boy. All I can say is that I now realise that it's a bad show, but the only reason I'm watching it is for the cars, so I'm alright with that :p

Other shows I'm enjoying at the moment are:
- Natsume Yujinchou (pretty chilled and lighthearted fun about a guy who sees ghosts, spirits and youkai)
- Level E (show about aliens on earth, kind of similar to Men In Black but without the actual MIB... decent comedy bits, and otherwise entertaining so far)
- Astro Fighter Sunred (A story about a traditional Power-rangers-style superhero and his every-day life. He smokes, gambles and drinks, while the bad guys are always polite and well-meaning, and the Japanese humour and juxtaposition makes this show for me)

I never said Madoka was spectacular, the last truly spectacular anime I saw was Eva 2.22, but you can’t compare, the damn movie has more budget in two minutes than Madoka in its 12 episodes. Talking about series, it was FLCL and that was what? 10 years ago.

Yet it absolutely blew my mind. The stark contrast of supercute stereotypes of the typical magic girl presented in such a twisted way did it for me, and what happens with the girl with glasses (forgot her name) remains one of the most WTF moments I’ve ever enjoyed in anime.

Stereotypes developed in such an atypical ambience for such stereotypes created a certain tension that really worked for me. Had it been featured with darkish characters, I think the twist and its impact would have been a lot less, but the story arc wouldn’t have been any less good. I enjoyed it a lot.

And Wangan Midnight sucks. But man, the cars look good.

You're quite open about your real identity...

In anycase, I just might be able to finally get started on Evangelion...

While I wait for GOSICK, World God Only Knows II, Ao No Exorcist and Seikon no Qwaser II dish out more episodes on the weekly... I have Aria in the morning, and Stage 4 of ID whenever I feel like watching that...

Rykon, I found uncensored episodes :sly:

Tell me youve seen evangelion before and you are just going back please! I loved nge and hope you enjoy.

No need to be so concerned, Kent, AOS- has been watching anime for less than a year, so it's not like he's been watching forever and hadn't in all that time seen one of the best animes ever. Now if he'd been watching anime for more like 2 years, I think not having seen nge would qualify him for a beating!

You think someone who started watching anime last september knew about Evangelion like you guys do?

Nope :) Never watched Code Geass either... want to keep guessing at other popular shows I've never watched?

Wangan Midnight is still at it:

You know how the cars all have massive turbochargers, the Z itself is pushing almost 700 horses from two turbines and three carbs, there was a 800-horse Supra, several GTRs, and the freaking Porsche. Yet it wasn't until ep 20 that I heard a blowoff valve chirping... and it sounds like a squirrel.

Had no clue you just started.
If thats the case go for cowboy bebop before gurren. Its far and away better than almost everything mentioned here. Easily a classic and widely recognized as one of, if not the best single season animes ever made.

Per wikipedia...
A 2004 poll in Newtype USA, the US edition of the Japanese magazine Newtype, asked its readers to rank the "Top 25 Anime Titles of All Time"; Cowboy Bebop placed second on a list that included such anime as Mobile Suit Gundam.[8][9] The American Anime magazine Anime Insider (No. 50, November 2007) ranked the 50 Best Anime by compiling lists of industry regulars and magazine staff, with Cowboy Bebop ranked as #1 of all time. In 2009, IGN published a list of the "Top 100 Animated Series", on which Cowboy Bebop placed 14th, making it the second highest ranking anime on the list.

If the shows aren't long then I'll do it... 12-24 episodes is roughly where I sit at. Death Note was an exception for 2 geniuses at work.

How would you guys compare Angel Beats to EVA? Not direct comparison, but like how well the show is executed in the amount of episodes vs the other.

For me, I didn't find anything wrong with Angel Beats, every episode seemed to be balanced in content, no fillers, and every episode had funny moments. It's the first show I've watched where I couldn't say something bad about it. Thus a 10/10 from me.

From wiki again...

In the U.S., Cartoon Network has regularly rotated Cowboy Bebop in and out of its Adult Swim block line-up. Adult Swim occasionally refers to Cowboy Bebop as "The greatest series we have ever aired."

T.H.E.M Anime Reviews said the series has "sophistication and subtlety that is practically one-of-a-kind", touting it as a masterpiece that "puts most anime...and Hollywood, to shame."[11]

On May 16, 2006 IGN published an article by Josh Pool entitled "Top Ten Anime Themes and Soundtracks of All-Time." Cowboy Bebop was listed as number one, "And the winner is Bebop! Yoko Kanno strikes again. From beginning to end this may be one of the best anime ever and certainly is tops when it comes to music."

In March 2009, the print and web editions of The Onion's A.V. Club called Cowboy Bebop "rightly a huge hit", and listed it as a gateway series to understanding the medium of anime as a whole.[12]

To think the anime haters at cn call it the greatest series they ever aired.

I believe its far better than most and only a couple come close. None are actually on par with bebop in terms of total quality. Bebop is the one absolute must see of anime.

If you haven’t watched it AOS, I’d happen to agree with Kent here. Look, I hate hype, and you know how belligerent I can be towards anime, but if there is ONE show that deserves all the good ink that’s been thrown at it, it’s Cowboy Bebop.

I still remember when I watched it for the first time, it was brand-spanking new and it blew my mind right from the opening, which was something I had never seen… or heard. The general coolness of the series, character development, the fact that you can see the episodes as stand-alones and still find them coherent and amusing, and the music. My God, THE MUSIC. To this day I still listen to the Bebop soundtrack daily. No joke. It also has decent comedy, not stupid silly stuff, but funny situations, and the characters are pretty idiotic in their cool way. Support and villains are also cool, and it has its bits of mushroom weirdness.

The “one must see of anime” comes true to it too. I’ve seen people that hate anime enjoying Bebop and hating themselves for it, then returning to hating anime. I’ve seen people bein’ interested in anime because of Bebop, and I’ve also seen people that have only followed one anime show in their entire life: Bebop.

I’ve said here before that I’ve been waiting for the next Bebop for… it came out in 1998, I think. Well, form whenever it came out, ‘till now. I’m still waiting. I’ve watched several anime shows to this day, I’ve really lost count, but nothing has captured nor fascinated me like Bebop did. Not even EVA, which I watched years after I saw Bebop, and which I was counting on to climb above it. But nah, falls short.

If you haven’t watched it, you really owe it to yerself.

I agree with Cano, except for the Eva falling short bit. I never thought another anime could dethrone Cowboy Bebop as my favorite, but Neon Genesis Evangelion managed to do so. :p

But yeah, the music is awesome and the characters are great. It doesn't really have an over-arcing plot, it's more episodic. But the episodes occasionally delve into the backstories of the characters, which is what the show is really about. It's about the flawed but likeable characters, their troubled pasts, and how they each deal with it.
