I wouldn't say original, I would say Madoka is more like... groundbreaking. Madoka is to Magical Girl like Evangelion is to Mecha.

But it is original in the sense that it isn't based off of anything or adapted from anything. The staff consisted of those of large talent, and the series surely didn't disappoint.

Groundbreaking's an acceptable word to describe it. It was the first to bolt a really sinister underlying plot to a magical girl show.

And yes, it would be original in the sense that it's an original IP. That, and the fact that it was the first to take advantage of ideas in other genres of anime to mind**** the previously un-mind****ed magical girl audience is about as far as it's originality goes though.

I'm not hating though. It did what it did very well, and I consider it to be a very solid anime. At least 10 times better than Clannad.
