Welp, right after coming home and enduring load shedding (It's a thing here in South now), I did my varsity work, all my other errands, sat down, decided to go for a stint and finish Kill La Kill, since the suspense was well.... Killing me.

After finishing off, watching the special and seeing what some reviewers had to say too, I'd have to say that Kill La Kill is one of the best anime's I've seen and is definitely one of my favourites. Despite somethings I didn't really like, like the higher fanservice towards the 2nd half of the show and some weird things happening, I liked watching every minute of it! On top of that it ended off on a bang and I think it tied up the loose ends nicely  Really happy with this one.

Thanks for recommending it chaps:tup:

It succeeds because the fanservice actually plays a point in the narrative. It's a satirical look at fanservice and magical girls, wrapped around deeper themes of social conformity and freedom of expression, all sprinkled with enough stylistic chop-sockey action to make any classic Hong Kong Kung Fu Movie lover smile.

Another cut-out mahou shoujo thing? Do you even Pretty Cure? Its been going on since 2004. Also one reason why The Rolling Girls has a fanbase is because...
http://sakuga.yshi.org/post?tags=rolling_girls

All that animation that AOT never had.
I know it's been going on since 2004. One Piece has been going on since 1999. Doesn't mean I'd watch it or recommend it. I don't know what sets it apart from your cookie-cutter magical girl experience so feel free to inform me if it's something like Madoka Magica.

I see that Rolling Girls has commendable animation and that doesn't surprise me, but it's no reason to build up hype for something that could be terrible.

Hey all,
I've been roaming around looking for some new anime to watch, when some lovely people directed me to this forum! It's nice to meet you all :D
I am mostly into Drama, Comedy, Love/Romance, Horror and Game, with my favourite anime including Code Geass, Hellsing, No Game No Life, Is This A Zombie and (Recently recommended) Highschool DxD.
Could any helpful people be so kind as to direct me to some anime along the lines/genre of those stated?
Thank you all in advance!

^ Haganai, Sword Art Online, Cat Planet Cuties.

The dubs of all three of those are fantastic too, if you're interested. ;D

Do you know MAL (MyAnimeList)? Make an account on there so you can keep track of shows.

I don't recommend Haganai or Sword Art Online (can't say anything about the last one).
Haganai has a horrible ending and Sword Art Online is just an adaptation of your average fanfiction IMO.
Then again, it's not like I watch good anime. :P

Black Lagoon
Zankyou no Terror
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni
Shinsekai Yori
Suisei no Gargantia

Action, Thriller, Suspense, half of them got good soundtracks. Variety in themes. How much SOL can you take? If you can withstand slow-paced shows, Aria the Animation (and its sequels) will be my top recommendation.

Black Lagoon seems great but I haven't gotten around to it.
Higurashi is really gory so if that's not accessible to you then avoid it.
Suisei no Gargantia turns into garbage at the end.

sorry m8s

You just came and put it so nicely , bravo sir.

I'm not sure where to start, or even explain how much I hated watching it. It's not like I'm trying to go against the trend and hate it just because everyone likes it. I went in thinking highly of it. I really enjoyed it, and then episode 14 of season 1 happened and from there I felt it was all 🤬.

I found myself going "Of course that happens." way too many times. I'll finish a show though, even if I truly despise it.

Ah, so it just fell predictable then? I might give it a proper go at some point, but I have way too much anime to watch before that happens.

Oh and it's a harem. Man I hate harems.

Yeah it was very predictable, very dull, all that. Funny thing about predictability. I watched the show with my sister and we made "bets" on what would happen later in the episode to a few episodes from where we were. Was never wrong in what I thought would happen. I don't like knowing that.

A Certain Magical Index is a bit of a harem, but humorously so.

SAO: The drinking game?

SAO irked me alot. The first few episodes gave a really cool premise that ended up being shelved and used as a sort of background to instead paint a very generic and boring story. Want an engaging story about being trapped in a video game? Have some girls. Want some character progression? He starts off strong and stays that way. forever.

The background stills were very pretty though.

Aye, what is actually wrong with SAO? I personally never understood it's huge appeal, I just always found it on the overrated side, but what is actually wrong with it?
Deus Ex Machinas everywhere, plot holes everywhere, characters getting rewritten multiple, multiple times instead of actually developing, bad pacing, and I can keep going. S2 does a better job of things, but unfortunately has certain content I'd rather not mention (It absolutely disgusted me and offended me). S2's saving grace is Sinon, and Mother's Rosario (The only actually decent arc in SAO).

Go watch .hack//SIGN instead, so much better.

So in short: SAO isn't really something to watch but it's just been hyped up

Yep, and in fact it was hyped up well before it even started airing thanks to fans of the LN's. The LN was like #9 on MAL or something like that for manga/LN rankings.

SAO's fanbase hyping the show up and many like myself getting disappointed (Especially once we finally realized what we were watching was crap and full of holes) is why we don't take the fanbase of various series getting an anime seriously (Such as Mahouka-was expecting it to suck. Hyped up LN, the anime was complete 🤬 and one of the worst things I've ever watched.). Heck I can't take much of the fanbase's arguments seriously.

Ex:"That isn't a plot hole. If you just read the light novels..." (They especially use this argument against criticism of episode 14, which is the one with the most holes by far) An adaptation should stand on its own. Plot holes are plot holes, you can't fill them in with your imagination or with stuff from the source material that got excluded from the adaptation...

Kill La Kill, Attack on Titan and Gurren Lagann.

Oh oh oh, if you want a romantic comedy, look no further than Chuunibyou demo Koi ga ****ai!. There's a reason one of the chicks in it features in my avatar. ;)

Grisaia no Kajitsu, I'm not sure what that would fall into, I still recommend it though.

No need to apologize. Gargantia isn't superb; I agree the end was a bit of mish-mash. The concept of finding yourself on a man-made island of ships, inhabited by a small hard-working civilization that don't speak your language and becoming one of them was appealing to me. It's like visiting country of a language you don't speak. Along with some of the pieces on its soundtrack, it's like vacation.

SAO could be one of the shows you'll learn about not giving into hype so easily. Majority of fans tend to be easily bought by one or two things about the series or character and go nuts about it: "OMG THIS IS THE BEST SHOW EVAR". A few tropes are all they need to get absorbed. For me, I didn't like SAO because the protag was already too powerful in the game he plays. That normally doesn't bug me, but somehow, Kirito manages to bug me. I don't remember why.

The idea where you have to escape the game world was cool. Spoiler alert, that ends about halfway into the show. I found the second half pretty lame.

My wife watched it out of boredom/sleep deprivation and can confirm this. She told me the first half was great, but from episode 14 onwards it all went to hell really damn hard.

I second this. All of it. KyoAni really made the characters cute with this one. :P

There are some pretty common things you can hear about SAO:
  • Quality of the whole show just takes a dive after episode 14
  • It's just a bunch of tropes put together in one place and that's why people love it
Or you'll hear this from the fanboys/girls:
  • OMFG THE STORY IS SO AMAZING AND THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IS SO GOOD XDDDDDDDD

I'm sorry, that was an outburst.

Actually, I remember why now.

My beef with Kirito is that he manages to pull through some really tough situations. Any plot armor applied to a setting to aid the protagonist in overcoming an obstacle isn't something new, but in the context of the fictional world, that happens in their reality.
In SAO, the setting is inside a video game, where the universe is programmed and bound by tangible limitations (i.e. your character moves at this speed level, jumps a specific height, can perform only 6 different attacks, etc.). Kirito's character breaks a whole bunch of fundamental laws of programming when the situation calls just so he can pull through impossible battles. I think he does do some hacking somewhere in the story, but hacking the game while in the game is kind of silly to me.

Plus, if you're told by the first and second episode their goal is to escape the game world, who in their right mind would jump back in after being trapped in there for 2 years?
