It's not even the kitty who's good (though her short hair is still genuinely excellent). I would've used one of her normal self but there wasn't a good one from recently.

I'm not even sure if this is the right thread or if I should go apepoop in the NFS 2015 thread, and I know this is like several anime seasons out of date, but I'm posting this in the hopes of getting noticed? Maybe?

Sorry ;_;

Did you make that?

Did you make that?
Yes, I did. I was joking around with @Suzumiya at the time, then I decided said joke should actually be a thing I draw.
I recently got a drawing tablet and Clip Studio Paint, so I've been spending a lot of time messing about with those things.

Now where's @AOS- ? He could critique a bit on those cars...
I know the cars are WAY sloppy and misshapen compared to the character line art. Towards the end of drawing this I was losing patience with the image, and figuring that I'm just posting for the internet jokes anyways, rushed it. If I ever color this, reworking the cars would be the very first thing I do.

I'm gonna shaddup before I derail this thread further.

I think the hat makes the head look too narrow among other things.

From that perspective the head proportion itself seems fine. Perhaps have the hat cover a little less of the person's hair, but if it's supposed to be a winter kinda thing, I emphasize a little.

I don't really like this at all but it's been made, so we have to pull it through 100%.

My friend on Steam called One Finger Death Punch One Punch Man.
He hasn't watched anime in years (watched InuYasha when he was a kid apparently).

Does he know that One-Punch Man is an actual thing?

Back from the dead. Bought the collectors edition of A Lull in the Sea from NIS America.

Also not very related but I'm playing Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millenium Girl and I really like the anime cutscenes. Too bad there aren't a lot and they are pretty far between in the story mode.

8/10, -02 for excluding Beste Mädchen. :p

The 2nd Initial D Legend movie was fun and man does it look good and sound good.

A good and short retelling of the series I say.

The last one is out in next month no?

I think if budget and interest permits, I'd like to see more movies covering the rest of the stages.

SVX
They've done well retelling the story in a theratical way

If they have a theatrical release here, I would love to see them.

Okay... so I finally watched it.

COWBOY BEBOP

So a review, then. Sort of.

Maybe it's strange that I've been avoiding a series often cited as a landmark in animation for the past decade, but unlike other people here, I don't have an anime life plan mapping out my viewing schedule for the next century. Much like the Bebop itself, I wander in and out of series basically at random.

But after watching Samurai Champloo, I knew that I finally had to see it. And so I did, gobbling it all up in just a week's worth of viewing.

Reactions: My, it's a lot like Firefly. I'm certainly not the first to think this, but I'm not on board with the conspiracy theorists who are proclaiming far and wide that one is a rip-off of the other.

So both series take place in a mixtopian future, with humanity spread out amongst terraformed worlds that lie very close together, with Chinese currency and/or language dominating the colonies, and some colonies reverting to a much simpler technological level than the central ones. That said, Firefly has a much different aesthetic, more detailed group dynamics and a more overtly western theme. The 'verse is set inside a single large solar system (albeit with multiple suns) and space travel is fairly linear.

Bebop takes place inside our Solar System, but with Earth devastated, humanity is forced to settle the larger moons and smaller planets. Of course, if you have the power to terraform large bits Mars, it's a bit suspicious that you're not trying to re-terraform Earth. Also, hyperspace is prominently featured, but not used to travel beyond the Solar System. Perhaps there is a logistical reason for that. Or perhaps the slowboats carrying the first extra-solar gates are still en-route to their destinations.

Bebop's settings are more eclectic than Firefly's, as are its visual and cinematic styles. The cultures are more diverse, but only revealed in snippets. Bebop focuses less on big picture storytelling and character interaction and instead focuses on style and an intelligent use of space and time. While the action is at times gritty and hyperkinetic, this is interspersed with quiet, contemplative movements that are quintessentially Japanese. The atmospheric feel of the entire series raises its re-watch potential exponentially. You aren't watching each episode to find out what happens in a series of mental bullet points, but rather to absorb the events (and music!) in their entirety. Also, rewatching to catch all of the nods to classic cinema seems worth an entire summer. One wonders how much of an effect Bebop had on anime... when many of the new "hits" of the genre don't have anywhere near as much stylistic sensibility and cinematic depth.

-

That said, Bebop's non-linear storytelling makes it difficult for non-cinephiles to follow. Too bad. I found myself hooked on the character interactions, how the dialogue left much unsaid, leaving more of the storytelling to actions and expressions both seen and unseen. This makes the characters at once superficial and deep, and very believably human.

Too bad I watched Champloo first, because:

The way the series wrapped up was partially reflected in the way the later Champloo series ended. And while there was a lot of death, seeing how SC ended with both swordsmen almost but not quite dying... you come to understand that the creator does not kill off characters to prove a point or to ensure a dramatic finale... in both these shows, the focus is on the journey and the bond between the travelers. More explicitly stated in Champloo than Bebop, but I found the theme of the familial bond much stronger in Bebop... another quality it shares with Firefly.

It's not often that you find yourself so invested in animated characters. Their flaws, shortcomings, struggles and failures (some unresolved, as in real life) make them feel more real than some living characters with ten times the dialogue. But I did, and I'm happy I finally took the plunge.

So, that's that. One less classic of animation off my list (and this after finally re-watching Ghost in the Shell after nearly twenty years, as well!). Wonder what I'll do next?

On to the next fix!
