Nothing much, if a show has a plot of interest to me (And really it's hard to explain what will be of interest to me), I'll watch it. If I'm recommended it, I'll watch it, and other reasons can apply.

This is what leads me to wanting to watch around 20% of all the anime out there, I'm way too 🤬 open. I'm far from being a selective viewer.

Nothing much...

Then you've contradicted your earlier response. :p

It's a generalization, but I feel most people decide to pick up on a Gundam show versus any other show is for the gundam battles... Previous Gundam watchers may look for a plot for any shows they haven't seen yet, but the fact that they know there will be battles is why they choose to continue watching it.

Am I wrong? Is that not why and how you guys select the gundam shows you watch for the most part?

Nope. I watch because the overall theme is fighting for peace. Also how far technology may go in the future. Gundam is one of the more realist Mecha shows.

If a Gundam show has just action, it'll be boring. I need a story and characters dammit!

I have a feeling that's not the response I'd get if I didn't present the answer to my question first. Since I said it, now everyone's going to find a different outlook to bring to the table. I'll try again another time.

Actually, here's a question that may stump you. What show involving war isn't about fighting for some kind of peace?

Bokurano involved fighting for peace...

The end of the world was put on their shoulders. If they didn't fight and win, they are considered responsible for the destruction of their world.

Pretty much none.

I haven't watched one that didn't have it to my knowledge. Crest/Banner of the Stars, Code Geass, Gundam 00, Shana III, One Piece, Naruto Shippuden, Bleach, Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, Blue Dragon, Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing, and many more all had wars involving fighting for peace somewhere in there.

BTW, generally most wars in anime are boring.

Pretty much none.

Which would stump this statement:

I watch Gundam because the overall theme is fighting for peace.

Because war shows are almost always about fighting for (some kind of) peace.

Which brings me back to my question: "What makes you choose the Gundam series over other Mechas? What makes you pick Gundams at all?"

Finally finished Joshiraku, and that was ok. Then I watched the Idolm@ster: Shiny Festa OVAs, and they were just simply awesome.

To add on: Gurren Lagann, Eureka Seven, Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Thanks dude 👍 I forgot to mention those, although I WAS thinking of TTGL at the time. Then I typed the post out annnnd it was gone, somehow.

And Turn A is steampunk, so hey, maybe I'll like it. Steampunk will never get old.

Gundam is one of the more realist Mecha shows.

Unfortunately the designs of the mechas seem to fail in the "realistic" aspect.

Is it ever explained how gundams can run for so long? I'm sure they require an exhausting amount of energy to power.

Turn A is good.

Ok to answer you Andy. I guess it's the little things. Like running out of ammo, which Gundam was the 1st to incorporate. I guess it's also that I've been watching Gundam since I was about 3 years old.

So it wasn't about fighting for peace, but because you wanted to see some Gundam action?

Gundam 00 had a very reasonable explanation on that one. They were running on these special engines, I think dealing with solar power (Which is one thing the whole show revolved around, the earth has run out of resources, so they have to rely on 3 very, very tall solar power tower elevators). Only those Gundams could use them, until they got replicated by the rest of the world as they rebelled against Celestial Being.
(It's been 3 years since I saw any of Gundam 00, so I can't remember clearly)

The plot, the fact it's part of the Gundam franchise. I need to see more Gundams.

I've seen only: Gundam Wing, Gundam SEED (Not season 2 which is considered one of the worst anime in existence by far and Gundam fans don't want to speak of it ever), SD Gundam, and 00 (Both seasons-only Gundam I've completed). Best one was 00, but that may change once I see Turn-A Gundam and G-Gundam.
^ Um, G-Gundam is like a blend of YuYu Hakusho, DBZ, and Daimos mashed together. Compared to Wing, 00, & the MS Gundam, G-Gundam is a joke.

Broadly speaking, what about plots used in Gundam make it attractive to watch over other shows of the same genre, or other genres?
^ Well to sum it up, other than being in a Mecha genre; all Gundam series are basically War Dramas. It explains the on-going conflict between both sides (Universal Century storyline) or for some meaningfull causes/purposes to counter established forces (00 & W).

-> Here are my Mecha resume:

Completed
- Gundam W [by far the best Gundam maybe until 00] (both english/tagalog)
- G-Gundam (tagalog)
- Godannar (english)
- Neon Genesis Evangelion (english)
- SDF Macross (JDM-sub)
- Macross II (english)
- Macross Plus TV & Movie (english/JDM-sub)
- Macross Frontier [by far the best IMO] (JDM-sub)

Still Watching
- MS Gundam (english)
- Gravion (english)
- Gundam 00 (english)

Incomplete
- Macross 7 (JDM-sub)
- Eureka 7 (english/JDM-sub)
- Voltes V (tagalog/english)
- Voltron/Go Lion (english)
- Voltron [2] (english)
- Mazingkaiser (english)

Dropped
- Raijin-Oh (english)
- Vision Escaflowne
- Sakura Taisen

Nope. Gundam literally comes from Gun and Freedom. I like how they incorporate practical technology or at least derived from real technology. They also use major feasible technologies, including a few that require a tiny bit of fiction. For example. Minovsky particles. They are derived from H3 which is a feasible power source.

I also like how they involve a lot of politics. Most people watch war for the action, I watch it for the bigger picture. The struggle between the Zeon who want to be their own nation and the Federation who wants to unify everyone. 00 in particular is mainly about uniting us humans, to realize how pointless countries are, we are all from Earth. One people, one planet.

Edit. Decided to Stream. http://www.livestream.com/bk201soiree

You're not human.
^ What can I do!? Back in PI, it was very though to catch up the series although it was very popular. The timeslot didn't work for me. Here in the US on the other hand my taste for fantasy has turned sour so I ventured onto other genres. ;)

~> And yes, I am not human. I'm an entity of pure darkness that will consume every happiness out of you! :sly:

I never got into Escaflowne...I watched it but was never a fan.

^ Thats how I felt too, back when it was dubbed in tagalog. Its was a very good series thou..

Solar power is pretty much the worst thing to have a power base of. Y'know how finicky that stuff really is? Sure, it IS a good source of renewable energy and I WOULD recommend it, but not for a giant-ass robot that has to fly all over the place and bunch things. Ha, just no.
