Ive been following this thread for sometime. If im not wrong you get the same XP for winning a race no matter what car you drive? This has led to the Inevitable "monstering" of races by people who wanna level up quickly. Ie use a much faster car than the AI, grab the cash and the XP and move on. Once they reach a certain point they are stuck doing the same races with monster cars just to gain the XP. Im not saying this is wrong. We all like the rewards thats why we play video games.
In GT4 there was the pre-cursor to XP "skill points" they werent used for anything but bragging rights as far as I remember but the fact was the worse your car was compared to the AI the more points you got for the win. This made the Events much more long lived for those who wanted to play for the "bragging rights". People would go back to even the very early races and try and do them in worse and worse cars to see if they could up on their skill points.
Since my file system crashed im not in the grind anymore but I know all about the "Oval with fast car for 5 minutes" grind. Wouldnt it be better if in that race you could achive even more XP for doing it in lesser and lesser cars? This would make more of the GT garage usefull, as at the moment there are too many useless cars that are poinless awards or not worth buying!?
You touch on the genius of the A-spec point system in GT4 and the huge potential it has. If it had been improved and better implemented into GT5,
along with as many tracks and events as GT4, GT5 would have been an incredible game.
The most beautiful part of it is, its not "game dictated" like level-up or PP or any other difficulty system I've seen. Rather its "player's choice oriented".
You can pursue it or not, in whole or part. It's strictly up to the player.
You can still play all the way through the game ignoring it if you wish.
As you point out, if you do pursue it, there is an incentive to aquire and drive many of the cars in the game, that otherwise are pretty much useless.
Not to mention the vast replay value it provides.
I do think it needed some improvement as implemented in GT4, but the huge potential it has to put the GT series in a class by itself, is unmistakable.
Alas for GT5 its a big "missed opportunity".
Always hope for GT6, maybe.
