The level up/credit/xp system in this game is broken

I'm sure that if the game just had a reasonable amount of events. I mean there is what nine for each section? that's 45 events and many of these only have three races with five laps on each. I'm sure GT4 was more than double the size of this. If we had more events to do than levelling up wouldn't become such a chore because there would be a bigger variety of ways to gain XP. Sure we have the special events but there isn't even that many of those.

I don't think it was meant to be this way.Somebody forked it up when they reset XP to zero every level. If it didn't reset, when you golded the next event series you would level up or be close, like it should be. If you only silver or less you would not make it for a few more tries anyway.
I really think somebody at PD just blew it when they set it up....

This is an interesting possibility^^^^. If so, they could fix it quite easily.

Of course, what I would like to see would have been 40 actual race levels!

Each level would have six race series, like we see on the Beginner/Amateur/Pro/Expert/Extreme Series window.

We would then have 240 race series instead of only 45.

Endurance Racing would unlock at 25% complete in the game.

Just my thoughts...

but i've come to accept that GT5 is angled more towards online play

As an online player, I have to say that GT5 is anything but online focused. If it was, I wouldn't be here posting critiques of GT Life in the desperate and unlikely hope that PD listens. I'd just be racing and not know what GT Life was even like.

Unfortunately for me, even if PD does attempt to fix things, I doubt that I will be able to escape offline mode, even so, offline as it is does not promote online driving. It would promote online driving is credits were easy to come by, I didn't need luck to find most of the cars, and I didn't need to raise some pointless experience bar just to buy the cars only to need even more money to bring them to 100% performance in the credit sink called GT Auto.

It would seem to me that PD severly downplayed the importance of online, and I hope they correct that using some of the great ideas posted on this forum or elsewhere.

thedeester1 has it right. I was one of the crazy ones that went for (and achieved) 100,000 A-Spec points in GT-4. That was fun! I know I could do the same thing in GT5 but it's not the same if I have to put the challenge on myself and there is no reward (except my own satisfaction). I think a lot of people have it right about choice too. I always liked to bronze the first license test, then get my first car and win all I could until I had to get another license. Then when I had finished all the races I would work on golding all the tests and other things (Special Mission 34 still gives me nightmares). Others liked to Gold everthing first. Still others only worried about bronze and then wanted all the cars. The good thing in previous GT's was that we could all play the game whichever way we wanted. Not so with GT5. Maybe it's a sad commentary on me, but I really would have liked an HD GT 4.

Exactly. I don't mind the leveling/credit/xp system YET- but I'm at lvl 19. I do mind how SMALL GT5's single player mode is. We need 300% more races PD!! WTH?! Why are these physics and cars and tracks going to waste on tiny events with very few tiny races with 5 lap races with no fuel loss, damage or tire wear???

Damn Kaz.. give us some more GT Life mode races. This is ridiculous as it is. I feel like the single player is about 20% complete. They could have done SO MUCH MORE.

THANK GOD I found this thread. I was about to write on the GT forums about my "game-ending experience bug"...
all I could think when my xp counter went to zero was "holy ****, i'm screwed"

I just can't believe that after soooo many years developing this thing they came up with the most retarded system I could think of. As someone said before, the whole point of experience points is that you GAIN experience over time...you're not supposed to start from the scratch every single time you level up...

it kills me to realize that for every GREAT thing that I find on GT5, there are 3 TERRIBLE ones.

this doesn't feel right, at least not like it should for a GT game :/

Ive been following this thread for sometime. If im not wrong you get the same XP for winning a race no matter what car you drive? This has led to the Inevitable "monstering" of races by people who wanna level up quickly. Ie use a much faster car than the AI, grab the cash and the XP and move on. Once they reach a certain point they are stuck doing the same races with monster cars just to gain the XP. Im not saying this is wrong. We all like the rewards thats why we play video games.

In GT4 there was the pre-cursor to XP "skill points" they werent used for anything but bragging rights as far as I remember but the fact was the worse your car was compared to the AI the more points you got for the win. This made the Events much more long lived for those who wanted to play for the "bragging rights". People would go back to even the very early races and try and do them in worse and worse cars to see if they could up on their skill points.

Since my file system crashed im not in the grind anymore but I know all about the "Oval with fast car for 5 minutes" grind. Wouldnt it be better if in that race you could achive even more XP for doing it in lesser and lesser cars? This would make more of the GT garage usefull, as at the moment there are too many useless cars that are poinless awards or not worth buying!?

You touch on the genius of the A-spec point system in GT4 and the huge potential it has. If it had been improved and better implemented into GT5,
along with as many tracks and events as GT4, GT5 would have been an incredible game.

The most beautiful part of it is, its not "game dictated" like level-up or PP or any other difficulty system I've seen. Rather its "player's choice oriented".
You can pursue it or not, in whole or part. It's strictly up to the player.
You can still play all the way through the game ignoring it if you wish.
As you point out, if you do pursue it, there is an incentive to aquire and drive many of the cars in the game, that otherwise are pretty much useless.
Not to mention the vast replay value it provides.

I do think it needed some improvement as implemented in GT4, but the huge potential it has to put the GT series in a class by itself, is unmistakable.

Alas for GT5 its a big "missed opportunity".
Always hope for GT6, maybe.

Great posts SCJ and Deester1, very well put. 👍👍👍
You have summarised the joy of the GT4's A-spec and one of the reasons people played GT4 for so long.

it is a mess, and small with very little events. The economy is a mess as well. Sad thing is a few blind fanboys defend this, other games have bigger SP and online systems and didnt take half as long to make. Sony made a lot of bad decisions with the PS3, and Gt5 is yet another example.

I don't mind the grind. i've played all the GT's with 1 goal in mind - own EVERY car!! I'm level 29 a-spec and level 27 b-spec, i just switch between them as i get bored. admittedly it was easier to grind in previous GT's, but i've come to accept that GT5 is angled more towards online play where you will probably be able to level up/earn creds quicker

The GT5 online system is in my opinion i bit of a nightmare. Compared to other games i own i seems to take an age to get going, you have little idea of the restrictions placed and when you finally join a "race" people may not actually decide to race at all.

It would benefit from a purpose built events that are strictly started and finished.

I raced online for the first time last night for about 4 or 5 hrs. After a while I was somehow host of the race and was able to kick out all the wreckers, switch tracks and start races. The physics were different than GT Life mode but still fun. I was pleasantly surprised- a lot of good clean racers out there and only (I would say), 5% Wrecker dbags.

game makers are missing some key points here, specially in the PS3: their public is getting older...

thinking about GT4.. did you ever get 100% ? and did you mind ? i guess it's because you could take all the quick race cars in arcade mode so you didnt have to complete your career.. and it was a lot easier to make money tough..
