Anyway, What do you guys classify as metal?
In general it follows a set pattern, although by listening to them I usually go on a case by case basis. Although "Metal" is a genre in itself, sometimes referred to as Traditional Metal.
If you want a real definition of Metal, maybe this will help:
Wikipedia
Heavy metal is typically characterized by a guitar-and-drum-dominated sound, strong rhythms and classical, bluesy or symphonic styles. However, heavy metal sub-genres have their own stylistic variations on the original form that often omit or alter many of these characteristics. There is a very wide variety of sounds and styles within the genre of Metal.
Indeed there are so many metal variations. Some of which could apply to Chevelle, in the same way Creed was metal at first. I think it fits the metal-ish pattern, although not the metal scene, so to speak.
Here are some of metal's sub-genres, of which many bands are interchangeable at times:
- Avant garde metal (Arcturus, Celtic Frost, Fantômas, Pan.Thy.Monium)
- Black metal (Dark Funeral, Gorgoroth, Rotting Christ, Zyklon-B)
- Classic metal (AC/DC, Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Savatage, Saxon)
- Death metal (Death, Arch Enemy, Pestilence, Vital Remains)
- Doom metal (Isis, Anathema, Katatonia, Candlemass, Pentagram)
- Glam metal (Mötley Crüe, Kiss, Judas Priest, Dokken)
- Gothic metal (Penumbra, Sirenia, Tristania, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation)
- Groove metal (Fear Factory, Helmet, Lamb of God, White Zombie)
- Neo-classical metal (Adagio, Symphony X, Necrophagist, Tourniquet)
- Power metal (DragonForce, Edguy, Gamma Ray, Iced Earth)
- Progressive metal (Queensryche, Pain of Salvation, Ayreon, Dream Theater)
- Speed metal (Motörhead, Helloween, X-Japan)
- Thrash metal (Anthrax, Slayer, Nuclear Assault, Overkill)
- Alternative metal (Alice in Chains, Deftones, Jane's Addiction, Korn)
- Christian metal (As I Lay Dying, Demon Hunter, Extol, Norma Jean)
- Folk metal (Moonsorrow, Blind Guardian, Agalloch, Finntroll, Mägo de Oz)
- Funk metal (Guano Apes, Skunk Anansie, Shootyz Groove, Faith No More)
- Grindcore (Napalm Death, Rise Above, Fear of God, Terrorizer)
- Industrial metal (KMFDM, Die Krupps, Marilyn Manson, Static-X, Rammstein)
- Metalcore (Becoming the Archetype, Chimaira, Killswitch Engage, Underoath)
- Nu metal (Coal Chamber, Disturbed, Godsmack, Limp Bizkit)
- Rapcore (Kid Rock, Linkin Park, Crazy Town, Rage Against the Machine)
- Symphonic metal (After Forever, Nightwish, Epica, Therion, Rhapsody)
And within each sub-genre there are many sub-sub-genres. Death Metal has like five different variations. Also, some bands may start in one genre and then move to another. Metallica for example, started out as speed metal, then turned into classic metal and now are crap metal (I just made that genre up).

Anyone listen to Mnemic? I'm listening to their album "Mechanical Spin Phenomena" and I really like it.
I've only heard about five songs by them. Although they sound good, I honestly can't tell them apart from the other similar bands that have sprouted in the past few years.
