....starting with the black album and going backward.

That's right. I don't know why, but it seems that Metallica have not new ideas. The were active only seven years (from Kill 'em All to Black Album).
Something similar happens with Black Sabbath. These guys are crazy. They released in a very short period of time three perfect albums which include the whole metal technique. I mean Black Sabbath, Paranoid and Master of Reality within a period of 14 months. Heaven and Hell is next in 1980 and then there is absolute inactivity. I can't understand this. Fortunately Maiden still release albums and perform tours, and they are one of the very few old-school bands that remain until today. I think that the road of heavy metal leads to a dead end. Unfortunately. :indiff: :guilty: :grumpy: :indiff: :indiff: :indiff:

Yea it sucks. I tried listening to St. Anger album stuff the other day and it just absolutely sucks. I can't stand listening to it. What happened they used to make such good hard hitting stuff and now they gone soft.

Anyway, What do you guys classify as metal? I got this question after noticing my Zune player has Chevelle as "Metal". It made me start thinking of what do I consider metal. I guess for me it has to have more than a verse, chorus, interlude, and crappy solo. It needs some variety of riffs wth a good well played solo in it. I'm sure there's some other things that I take into consideration, but can't think of them now.

Anyway, What do you guys classify as metal?

In general it follows a set pattern, although by listening to them I usually go on a case by case basis. Although "Metal" is a genre in itself, sometimes referred to as Traditional Metal.

If you want a real definition of Metal, maybe this will help:

Wikipedia
Heavy metal is typically characterized by a guitar-and-drum-dominated sound, strong rhythms and classical, bluesy or symphonic styles. However, heavy metal sub-genres have their own stylistic variations on the original form that often omit or alter many of these characteristics. There is a very wide variety of sounds and styles within the genre of Metal.

Indeed there are so many metal variations. Some of which could apply to Chevelle, in the same way Creed was metal at first. I think it fits the metal-ish pattern, although not the metal scene, so to speak.

Here are some of metal's sub-genres, of which many bands are interchangeable at times:
- Avant garde metal (Arcturus, Celtic Frost, Fantômas, Pan.Thy.Monium)
- Black metal (Dark Funeral, Gorgoroth, Rotting Christ, Zyklon-B)
- Classic metal (AC/DC, Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Savatage, Saxon)
- Death metal (Death, Arch Enemy, Pestilence, Vital Remains)
- Doom metal (Isis, Anathema, Katatonia, Candlemass, Pentagram)
- Glam metal (Mötley Crüe, Kiss, Judas Priest, Dokken)
- Gothic metal (Penumbra, Sirenia, Tristania, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation)
- Groove metal (Fear Factory, Helmet, Lamb of God, White Zombie)
- Neo-classical metal (Adagio, Symphony X, Necrophagist, Tourniquet)
- Power metal (DragonForce, Edguy, Gamma Ray, Iced Earth)
- Progressive metal (Queensryche, Pain of Salvation, Ayreon, Dream Theater)
- Speed metal (Motörhead, Helloween, X-Japan)
- Thrash metal (Anthrax, Slayer, Nuclear Assault, Overkill)
- Alternative metal (Alice in Chains, Deftones, Jane's Addiction, Korn)
- Christian metal (As I Lay Dying, Demon Hunter, Extol, Norma Jean)
- Folk metal (Moonsorrow, Blind Guardian, Agalloch, Finntroll, Mägo de Oz)
- Funk metal (Guano Apes, Skunk Anansie, Shootyz Groove, Faith No More)
- Grindcore (Napalm Death, Rise Above, Fear of God, Terrorizer)
- Industrial metal (KMFDM, Die Krupps, Marilyn Manson, Static-X, Rammstein)
- Metalcore (Becoming the Archetype, Chimaira, Killswitch Engage, Underoath)
- Nu metal (Coal Chamber, Disturbed, Godsmack, Limp Bizkit)
- Rapcore (Kid Rock, Linkin Park, Crazy Town, Rage Against the Machine)
- Symphonic metal (After Forever, Nightwish, Epica, Therion, Rhapsody)

And within each sub-genre there are many sub-sub-genres. Death Metal has like five different variations. Also, some bands may start in one genre and then move to another. Metallica for example, started out as speed metal, then turned into classic metal and now are crap metal (I just made that genre up).

ITR
Anyone listen to Mnemic? I'm listening to their album "Mechanical Spin Phenomena" and I really like it.

I've only heard about five songs by them. Although they sound good, I honestly can't tell them apart from the other similar bands that have sprouted in the past few years.

Trivium will be at this show too. so will Machine Head and Gojira (never heard of them..) Damn, I wish I was going. Sounds like it will be a badass show.

Ah, must be the same tour. Trivium are headlining, so "Lamb of God will be there also" would have been more appropriate ;)

I'm only going to see Trivium (I hope they play The Crusade) and Lamb of God, so hopefully LoG will play right before Trivium so I don't have to sit through the other 2 bands.

I've heard that Gojira were originally named "Gozilla" (or something like this) but they changed it because it was too funny :ouch:

I guess you've never heard a band called Gongzilla?

If you want a better description of Gojira, they're often referred to as progressive death metal, including elements of thrash, death and prog, but they tend to mix it too much with metalcore.

I just come across a band called Wintersun. Basically the ex-front man of Ensiferum (another awesome band for the unacquainted) formed it when he left.

They're a mix of melodeath and folk metal and are kick much rear-end. 👍

If so what do you listen to? What r ur favourites?
I like the following:

Slayer, Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica(pre Black album, now they suck), Anthrax, Megadeth, Pantera, Gwar, Dragonforce, Judas Priest, Lamb of God, Venom, Dio, Bloodbath, Deicide, Ministry(probably more industrial though), Marilyn Manson, Rebel Meets Rebel, and Motorhead

So lately, I've been listening to alot of Grind and variations of it. Bands such as Circle of Dead Children, Agorphobic Nosebleed, Cephalic Carnage, Napalm Death, Carcass, and Dying Fetus.

If you're into fast, constantly changing riffs, machine-gun like blast beasts, and low, unintelligible death growls/pig squeals then check out any of the bands I listed above.

So since i've gotten into metal i've explored many different bands and have stuck with Lamb of God. They make me want to go \m/ with all their songs.

I wish I can make it to their show over here in June. :)

to avoid starting a new thread i have a question.

What bands or cd's would you suggest for death metal ?

right now the only thing i have is Nile, which is pretty awesome but im looking for more. I heard another kid talking about lamb of god being a good band and am wondering which of their cd's you'd most recommend also.

Thank you :D

Lamb of God are hardly death metal. I'm not really into death metal, but Bloodbath are pretty good.

Anyone listen to All That Remains? I found them while playing Guitar Hero 2. Their song Six is in it. Pretty fun to play too. :D
