McLarenF1GTR - Please don't start a "Who started Metal?" argument. I hate them. It's not clearly known, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't Sabbath. There were many Metal bands formed back then, but none clearly the 1st.

Shannon and Road_Dogg33J - Pantera fall under the following according to many popular and/or well-informed sites: Metal, Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal (later albums), Alternative Metal and Partial Death Metal (Great Southern Trendkill). I just say Metal, as Heavy Metal are for bands from the 80's, Thrash is not covered in all albums, Alternative is just bull**** and Partial Death Metal? Come on, please.

Shannon
I don't really care about new forms of music or whether you like them or not, nor am I telling you to stop listening to nu-metal. I'm just saying it's misplaced as a sub-genre. How can it even be considered metal if it doesn't contain any riffs, solos, etc, or even sound metalish at all? You come into a metal forum and say about nu-metal, of course you're going to get frowned upon. It's like walking into a church on Sunday morning screaming "God is a lie!".

I agree with Shannon here, but you have to understand we're not against you, it's obviously your preference, but we're simply discussing. We're not telling you what to listen to.

I'm fairly positive after some small research that Biohazard started Nu-Metal. Anthrax are considered Heavy Metal, but had alot of influence obviously. Korn merely made Nu-Metal popular. I may be wrong about Biohazard, but this is what I found.

You are correct... Anthrax was also very instrumental in the creation of the Nu-Metal genre... They did songs with Public Enemy, and even had a few rap heavy songs of their own...

Nu-Metal is too oversimplified for my taste... It's like pop metal... Over simplified riffs, simple hip hop style beats, and uninspired lyrics...

But whatever yanks your chain...

Shame.

Priest do come close. AC/DC are the best Aussie band (not just metal band) ever. Zeppelin and the Crue are good. I hate Pink Floyd. Bands like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit bring down the name metal, along with Korn. Sorry, but they do. Your preference, I respect that. But it's the truth.

Pink Floyd,Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park aren't metal bands!!!!!!Do you know what metal is???Real metal is Metallica!

I don't think he said anywhere that Linkin Park or Limp bizkit are metal, certainly not Pink Floyd.

See,he did mention it.

Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit are nu-metal. I think that even putting them in there is dangerous. I don't see any connection to metal. With KoRN, I can clearly see some kind of link.

Pink_the_Floyd -- I didn't say anywhere that they were metal, although Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit technically are. But I, like many people, don't class Nu Metal as real Metal. Now you asked ME if I know what REAL metal is? I listen to REAL metal buddy.

ROAD_DOGG33J -- Actually Korn, Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit are in the same category.

I also want to edit something that sounds wrong, even though I didn't mean to say it ...

AC/DC AREN'T metal. I hate when people say that.

I know they are in the same category, but I can't link those two others with metal in anyway. Their music is pretty soft and at best would go under rock.

Slayer and pantera Too dude

Is Motley Crue considered Metal (at least for me it is)

Motley Crue are hair metal. Dunno what the hell hair metal is, but according to allmusic that's what they are.

With a gritty reputation that was arguably equaled only by Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe's infamous antics made them a force to be reckoned with in the '80s. As one of the first and most influential hair metal bands of the '80s, Mötley Crüe had a series of hit albums, the biggest and most noteworthy being 1989's Dr. Feelgood.

I would say Motley Crue are hard rock.

"Hair Metal is a derisive term applied to the slick, pretty, and pop-oriented heavy metal and hard-rock bands of the late '80s. These bands expanded the approach of the loud but safe arena-rock bands, only they had a more distinctive visual image because they were living in the post-MTV era. Wearing flashy clothing, heavy makeup, and large, teased hair, the bands had an appearance that was more distinctive than their music, though both their look and their sound became a curse in the early '90s. After Nirvana brought grunge and alternative music to the top of the charts in 1991, hair metal bands quickly died, losing all of their popular support. Some tried to change their sound, while others struggled on with their trademark sound to no avail. Though some bands still survived in the mid-'90s, they had adopted a harder sound than they had in the '80s, but their fondness for pop hooks and melodies had not faded away." -allmusic.com

So, Motley Crue is Hard rock. Recently I started listening to another 80's rock band, (I think its also hard rock) So has anyone ever heard of a band called "Cinderella"?

yeah man, Cinderella kicked ass in their day. Tom Keifer had a great voice, bet there's not much of it left now though...
any UK metal fans about here?

I've heard of them, but not heard their music. I know they were very popular in their day.

Also g.money, haven't seen you around here. What sort of Metal are you into?

hey Jimmy - no, I never noticed this forum, but I haven't been around here too much recently. I'm into all sorts of stuff, from 80's and 90's LA rock stuff to Pantera, Machine Head, Slipknot kinda stuff, not so much hardcore or death/black metal, but depends on the mood! Pretty much anything really, play in a band myself so I'm always keen to know what else is going on. How about you?

Well you could search back through this forum, I'm always here, but I listen to Thrash, Death, Grindcore, Tech Metal, a bit of Black and Heavy. I also don't mind a bit of good Hard Rock, like AC/DC or some Gunners. Mostly I like the heavy, fast, aggressive stuff. 👍

Jimmy, might you have any recommendation on specific songs be Devolved, Dimmu Borgir, or In Flames? Thanks, I hadn't really heard much of these bands and I want to give them a try.

Yeah, I am kind of like Jimmy. Aggressive, heavy, fast, and brutal metal music is what I prefer. Grindcore sits on the top of my priority hit list as my most favorite of extreme metal music followed by death, industrial metal (not the nu-metal kind), tech metal, thrash, metalcore, and heavy metal. I like hard rock too.

What is interesting about grindcore is that it also has four subgenres of its own. They are goregrind, cybergrind, crustcore, and pornogrind. I like all of them except for pornogrind because this kind of genre is the only type of grind(core) music that I hate since most of the lyrics deal with sexually perverted references. Ana l Cun t (because the band's name is offensive, I had to put spaces, sorry) falls into that category.

For nu-metal, this genre really defaces the good name of real metal music. It is "riffless metal". Actually, it is rock, metal, and an added "X-factor" in this kind of music. An X-factor is anything that has hip-hop, rap, or industrial references but mainly it is rap and hip-hop combined with the rock music. I really hate it when it comes to this.

With all this said, keep real metal alive! \m/\m/ :trouble:  👍

That's also how you could describe my metal style Thrash, Death, Heavy, Black Metal (such as Slayer, Slipknot, Pantera, Metallica, Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God, Otep, and others).

LIke Jimmy, I also listen to Hard Rock such as Motley Crue and Cinderella.

I'm starting to get into Punk such as Rancid.

Trigger, Cloud Connected, Swim, Clayman & The Quiet Place all = 👍

I also like older stuff like G n' R, Aerosmith, Cinderella, Crue, Skid Row etc etc, but thats cos I'm a bit older and grew up on that kinda stuff. I also like stuff from the Prodigy and Foo Fighters - not metal, I know, but so what? Good anyway. Have a look at my band if you want, http://www.sevenyearsdead.com for a Pantera/machinehead/black label society (amongst many others) influenced band. There are some mp3's and stuff on there, but a bit old - just recorded some new stuff which is a lot better \m/  \m/
