I just acquired Amorphis' new album, "Eclipse". Why haven't I heard of these guys before?! Shear awesomeness.

They're somewhat similar to Opeth, which is probably why I like them so much. ;) The vocalist's growls especially sound similar to Mikael Akerfeldt's.

I am a great fan of Amorphis. Gosh... for more than 10 years now!

Tales From The Thousand Lakes was the album that got my attention. It's basic Death Metal, but with some light, catchy folk tunes. A classic.

Now, Elegy...
If you check the "Perfect Albums" thread, you'll see that I mentioned this one there. It's probably my all-time favourite album and it's definitely the one I heard more times in my entire life. I could play the whole album from the beginning to the very end in my guitar.
Anyway, it was a more complex - although "lighter" - album than Tales..., and it had more clean singing in it. It was more folky as well and all things together worked wonderfully.

Enough with the crap talk, but let me say that everyone who comes to this thread should listen to this one.

With Tuonela, Amorphis went in a new, more mainstream direction. It was hard for me to accept their new sound, but eventually I ended up liking it.
With Am Universum they evolved in their new sound and produced a much more mature album than Tuonela.
These two are similar, but if you have to choose just one of them, definitely go with Am Universum.

To end this in a short way, Far From The Sun was pure crap to my hears and I gave up on the band.

I haven't heard the new album, Eclipse properly but I read that they are again going in a new direction. The vocalist is new in this album as well.

EDIT: Oops. Sorry about the testament.

If you're looking for heavy metal that doesn't rely on screaming, but that doesn't go into the metalcore genre either, I've been listening to Confessor lately. Mellow lyrics and strong instrumentation.

It's really not all that bad. I've only ever heard Elegy and Far From The Sun myself, and this was far from the latter. It's a fairly new sound, but it's not new in a bad sense at all.

Definitely give it a go, Diabolical - especially if you've been such a big fan of the band for such a long time.

That'd be where you're wrong, as I think most of us here know about Dream Theater. They're probably one of my favourite metal bands to date.

Well, around here not many people know about them. And the people that do, I've told them.

Or maybe they just suck at life. :p

Anyone heard of Deathstars? They sound like an English language version of Rammstein, and they have a cool look. It's almost a band of four Marilyn Mansons.

I will, I will. Thanks. ;)

By the way, give Tales From The Thousand Lakes a try as well. 👍

Oh man, I'm surprised nobody reccomended Sonata Arctica to me. If you like Dream Theater, I strongly advise checking this band out! 👍

I have the entire Sonata Arctica discography here, and I've never really been able to get into them.

Shall do.

going back to Therion and similar music, check out Sirenia. They mix the Therion-like choruses, with death metal grunts and shrills and the gothic metal baritone voice.

Therion has become my favorite band, esp. since I got used to Lemuria and Sirius B. None of the other bands' sound comes close, or at least they don't sound good in all the areas.

edit: Sirenia is not that bad

Tales from the thousand lakes is the only Amorphis album I gots.

At the moment I can't stop listening to Moonsorrow's Suden Uni album.

Just to let you know that the latest Devin Townsend album, Synchestra, is looking good. As usual anyway. 👍

Evergrey, too.

Evergrey is sweet swedish metal! I really dig this band and Recreation day is a good album. Also, if you like Dream Theater (and who doesn't, really?) Symphony X, Pain of Salvation, Shadow Gallery, Sonata Arctica, Liquid Tension Experiment, Kamelot, Mullmuzzler...

The prog metal list goes on!

Let us ride into battle, swords drawn Manowar style!

Anyone tried any of Ensiferum's stuff? They're a great viking metal band.

I'm really starting to get into folk metal bands, especially those that deal with Norse mythology. 👍

Bands that deal with Norse mythology do tend to be quite awesome. Man, it's been a while since I've listened to any Ensiferum. In fact, on that note, I might whip some out.

Shannon, I'd recommend you some Vintersorg, Bathory, In Battle (one of my favourite Metal bands to date, actually), Equilibrium (fairly new band), Borknagar and, well, I know I don't have to mention Amon Amarth, as I know we both share a massive love for that particular band, but it's worth a mention for anyone else playing along at home.

Good to see this thread back.

Just got back from The Taste of Chaos concert. Awesome show with the Deftones headlining, and other bands like Atreyu, As I Lay Dying, Silverstien and many others getting the crowd going. A little deaf, but the lack of hearing and $40 ticket was well worth the performance that was put on. If the tour comes near your town, its definitly worth the money. 👍
