The slower cars need to stay.

There should be a good balance between the slower cars and the faster ones in-game.

ie: Why do we have THREE classic VW's, TWO Cappuccino's and TWO Swift's when there are only FOUR Premium LMP/Group C's in-game?

I personally enjoy driving both fast cars and slower ones. I love taking my 908 out on Nurburgring, then immediately taking my stock Cappuccino around Autumn Ring :D
I tried taking the Ford Model T around Nordschliefe in GT4. I could only get so far until a hill stopped it in its tracks.

I don't mind a few really slow cars, as long as they're in the minority and most under 80 hp are overtly sporty. And the model year/name duplicates, wow... there are 642 Japanese cars in a game with just over 1000 total! There are more Nissans than there are American cars total, and almost as many Hondas!

That situation needs fixed. Quality over quantity, quality over quantity...

I'll 'forth' that :D Seriously, the thing about GT is that you can have just as much fun in a rust bucket with crap tyres on it as you would have in a race car. It's what 'defines' GT. Without them, it would be just another racing game. Keep them. These crummy cars mean more to the game than the odd Fezza or Viper. 👍

I'll fifth and sixth that! 👍

I absolutely agree with what you said here. Define is such a excellent word in this case because GT makes each car different and BRILLANT at the same time.

In response to that:
Journalist: I've test-driven a lot of the cars. Modern cars now drive quite alike – often it's hard to appreciate the difference between them. In the game there's always a difference between two cars – what do you do to enhance that difference?

Kazunori Yamauchi: It's really because the body structure and layout of the cars are becoming almost identical that we came up with different cars. For example, if you take the Ferrari 458 Italia and the Ford GT and look just at the body they're almost identical and you can't really tell them apart.

I think it's just that sports cars have evolved to that point now. For the character of each of the cars, manufacturers focus on providing different sounds that the driver will experience in the car, and also the steering and driving feel.

They would treat things like the feel of the power steering and I guess some of the cars have an adjustable power steering feel. There's many cars where, by turning this knob, you have a very different character in the same car.

On the base part Gran Turismo is pretty much the same. In terms of character you'll find of course that older cars have a stronger one. You'll find that especially so when you compare cars with the same power ratio over those of an older era – the difference is much greater in older cars.

You must be missing the fact that Gran Turismo is developed in Japan. Theres even less cars from other countries too. You dont see the Trabant or Dasius Sandero in there either do you?

Yet, there are still over 400 other cars to choose from. A good chunk (nearly all) of them not duplicates. Japanese cars (standards) are the ones that are duplicates. If there were 110 premiums (50-60% of the premiums) that were duplicates, then we'd have a problem.

Is Japan where they laser-scanned the Nurburgring?

Is Japan where they laser-scanned the Nurburgring?

In this case (GT1 had all Japanese cars, didn't it? wasn't that game better/more fun than GT5 according to some people? the nitpickers. back on topic), PD isn't entitled in having a balanced car list in the way WE want it. The way some people want it, more domestic cars, isn't really something Kaz has in mind, because he's Japanese. Just like we want more American cars, why isn't he allowed to choose whatever he wants? And why the picking at something so impossible to change?

People ask the man whose dedicated nearly 20 years of his life to ONE game to reconsider everything he decides/has decided. It's borderline hysterical. We can't have everything, and Kaz knows that (the man seeks perfection, not to irritate people with his supposed "incompetent" decisions). We should take what we have and look at the brightside, GT has only just begun.

NO, but that's where Kaz lived within the confines of before he raced his first 24 hours Nurburgring.

Not unless the Dodge Viper, Chevrolet Corvette, or TVR Griffith 500 are Japanese. :sly:

I don't have a problem with slower cars, you got the wrong guy.
FYI though, his biggest market, and second, are EU and US, smart business caters to the bulk of customer demands rather than selfish desires. But none of this has anything to do with a thread that's mostly everyone saying "I like slow cars too!"
All because someone got to worked up hearing a different opinion.

The point is they can leave the island sometimes. ;)

That completely makes sense, the biggest markets part. The thing is Kaz has stated before that some of the cars he selected, mainly all the duplicates, are there for the Japanese fans who appreciate and know the differences in every year of a model. He said something along those lines.

Kaz doesn't look at other games to try and compete. From a business standpoint, it would be smart to add more American and European cars than Japanese cars from now on. But then that would mean "betraying" his home base. It's a bigger picture than just, why can't this be this way instead of the way it's always been? No one should blame him for having more Japanese classics than American cars.

Side note: Kaz was able to name off all the cars on his street when he was 3 years old. A bit of nostalgia for him to add some (maybe) of those cars and others that he grew up with around the time that they were produced.

AAAnd I'm sure you don't have a problem with slower cars.

Are you sure about that.

Was it a betrayal when GT2 did it?

Gran Turismo, for me, has always been about the 'normal' cars. How many games are focused on their supercars? Gran Turismo has always been about buying a normal car, building up through the ranks and being able to use that car for some portion of the races.

Getting rid of the 'normal' cars just ruins the game.
I agree completely. Take a game like NFS hot pursuit (the new one), the car with the lowest top speed can still go 150 mph ( I think), in GT5 some cars can't reach that with 150 thousand worth of tuning, and I think it's cool to have a racing game that isn't all sports cars and supercars, gran turismo has a lot of slow, everyday cars which is good because unless daddy is rich, you're pretty much forced to buy a civic or a miata as your first car, as opposed to say, a wrx sti.

How are you supposed to get away from the police in a Fiat 500?

I think this is not really a problem of developer choices, but more like car availability on their territory. The fact that they modeled in some cases right hand drive versions of european cars which are supposed to be LHD (Alfa Romeo 147, Peugeot 207 and maybe others I haven't noticed) supports this, in my opinion. The import car market in Japan is very small compared to other territories (around 1-2% of the total if I remember correctly), and many of the "foreign" cars there come from parallel distribution channels.

In other words, it's just that it's much easier for PD to model japanese cars.

I agree, keep all the "slow" cars.

It's great fun racing in an online lobby as a tuned Daihatsu Midget when everyone else is in a Veyron or Red Bull x2010...

After seeing the support and interest for slower cars I'm thinking of creating and room for them where we can race, cruise, drag, drift etc with players voting for tracks and what we should do. Who would be interested in joining?

I'll title it: Slow Car Fun (Clean), set a power limit of 300bhp (High but allows some of the heavier cars that are still a little slower) and all aids off. The rules can be fairly relaxed although anything deliberate will be punished with a boot after warnings etc.

Those who want to join Pm me your names or add me on PSN (flnnersj (Spelt fLnnersj)) I should have the room running by 7:30pm UK summer time today (GMT+1?).

Sounds like a fantastic idea, would love to attend 👍

OK I'm just gonna go and make the room either add me as a friend or search the following:

Race for Fun
No SRF
Cote 'd Azur

and look for the room titled Slow Car Fun (Clean)

EDIT: the room number is: 1472-6681-3329-8089-2188

I one drove the Nurburgring 5 times in my 1992 ST202 Toyota CELICA.

The car was stock, really a lovely drive, it wasn't the RC model either, just the regular.

Not slow car discussion but my Slow Car Fun room is open again and the number is: 1472-6681-3759-3058-0850 :)

This goes back to what I said before, quality over quantity. Either Kaz wants to have the most cars of any racing game anywhere, or Sony is pressuring him to have the most so they can show it off. As a result, the modelling team has to run out and find cars as fast as possible, and as a result they end up with a bunch of slow, often taller-than-wide Kei boxes and over 9000 Skylines, which they legitimatize by saying the differences are important to Japanese car enthusiasts. If they'd decided to settle for a somewhat lower car count and instead included only the best few Skylines while paying more attention to American & European cars, the result would be a much less lopsided & much better balanced game. I'm sure the home market wouldn't mind.

One more thing. The really slow cars like the Subaru 360 and Citroen 2CV have no place in a video game and need to go.

No, the 2cv and others just need some events to use them...
I like slow cars and some of the last cars in the OCD are wonderful. I just regret that similar cars from other countries are missing (old Peugeot for example, 20x, 50x, with x < 5) and that only one A spec event fits those cars in stock versions)

The slower cars ain't going anywhere soon.

^ Uh literally and metaphorically speaking of course.

You seriously want to keep cars that can't even go 60mph?

Yes, they have a place in the game, especially on shorter tracks.
And to tell the truth the best races I've experienced online have been those with the slower cars.

Love this car, enough to ring the Ring 5 times.
