Goose was circulating as well, but I think he was trying to suss out his new brake balance controller, 'cos he wasn't exactly trying

Just you wait 'till I get that sucker dialled in! I'm having rear end stability issues under heavy braking at the moment, but I will sort it out!

Hey can I run my own car???

Ok, Dave, I see your iconic French, mid engined, turbocharged, rear wheel drive rally weapon, and raise it by... four wheel drive!

...and about 180bhp too!! How am I meant to compete with that:crazy:

Having a go at Laguna Seca soon.

Dave

oh and the commodore has done more than a staggering 1,000,000 (one million) kms

edit - and never had an engine rebuild, or any major problems. However the odometer stopped working around 500,000 about 6 years ago, so i can't prove it

Well I have updated my time post for Laguna Seca, the Clio was the first to be driven in anger, surprisingly good around here as the corners are not so tight and dont provoke too much understeer.

I have removed some weight from the two Renaults and added some horses to the Alfa which now boasts 155 ponies thanks to a stage 1 N/A tune, I looked into a stage 1 turbo which gave 168bhp but it somehow wasnt in keeping with the Alfa's character....

Clio so far is a 1'45.963 with <1'45 being the first target, with so many tricky corners there should be more time to come from this circuit.

The Alfa is next up for some track time and then the 5 which might benefit from being 30kgs lighter now.

regards

David

Respect for keeping with the image of the car. I think that's important

No Dave, it needs more power! 210bhp isn't nearly enough!

Well lets just say i didnt want to be....predictable in my tuning, trying not to go straight in for the big power mods:tup:

Boogieman
I bought cheap old cars . . now I have some money left to pay my tuner to travel with me . .

Me too, I have to take a whole team with me, the Renault 5 by default blows up and needs a rebuild every 5 laps or so:lol:

OK guys, that's where we are, let's see what else we can do.

Goose, that Holden of yours is one tough cookie, but I bet one thing: the interior light doesn't come on when you open the door! :D It's always the first thing to go...

Ok had 10 laps with the Alfa and 3 laps with the 5 Turbo....

Despite the Alfa now boasting a greater power to weight ratio than the Clio and being FR layout, I cant beat my Clio ghost as yet, exiting corners the Alfa is stronger being able to get the power down faster, the Clio's acceleration is much better and the braking is in a different league...

The 5 Turbo's target is to crack 1'40.000 which I think is achieveable, feels smooth at Laguna and -30kgs is noticeable indeed.

Enjoying 3 totally different charactered cars even if they are at the slower end of the scale:)

cheers

David

Glad you're enjoying it, Dave: you've got 2 of my favourite cars there, but I'm not certain I've ever driven the Clio.

World's Stupidest Gearing Award

The Caterham has the most bizarre gearing! This is a car with the aerodynamics of a brick that is made to blitz everything below 100mph. You'd think it would be geared for the job, but no. It has a 6 speed gearbox, and 1st is good for 82mph, 2nd 114mph and 3rd 145mph!!! Until I took it to the speed bowl I hadn't used anything above 3rd. Go figure...

It was annoying me so much, I took it to the speed bowl, just to see. And this is what I found:
.....................mph@..............max mph @
revs:.............10,000................c.12,000
gear
1st....................70......................82
2nd...................96......................114
3rd...................122.....................145
4th...................137.....................160
5th...................154...................c170
6th...................162......................?

Actual top speed with 199bhp: 164.83mph

Notice how the gears close up at the top: WHY???
At a real track day, Caterhams are always among the fastest things there (369kg...), which is why I chose it, but here the handicap of that gearbox is infuriating

I just wanted you to know that :ouch:

well got the audi's back, decided on turbo upgrades for the RS6 and S4 ;),
standard the RS6 comes with K04 turbos,so out they went and in went 2 ATP GTRS turbos :D(mate has one on his leon)
imgbigturbogt2871rlrg3if.jpg

although they are on low boost setting as i dont have the bigger injectors and fuel pump fitted(need stage 2 for that)
result was 492BHP :D

with the S4 i decided to removed the K03s Turbos and fitted it with star performance spec hybird K04's that came from the RS6,result was 293bhp :D

decidied just to get the quattro chipped so it now has 262bhp :)

the car were then flown over to the us
first impression on the RS6,too heavy lol, suspension needs stiffend alot.
first impression on the S4,feels nice and solid, quite alot of oversteer though
first impression on the quattro, feels great as always more direct steering too

laps times so far all quick 1 lappers
RS6 - 1:38.814
S4 - 1:41.831
Quattro - 1:47.245

Actually, you will be shocked to find out that absolutely everything works! The air-con needs re-gassing, but it still blows cold air, so it's all good

Baby the car? *goes into hysterical laughing fit* Nope, not at all, I wind it to 6,000 RPM on a regular basis (redline on the stock tach, and in the specs is 6,250 RPM, I drift around the town, do burnouts, and basically drive it hard (kinda like I stole it). I have just had a fair bit of experience thrashing cars, and I know when to give it a break. It starts first time every time, without any coaxing needed. just turn the key ad there it is. It's a big chuggy on cold mornings until the oil works its way through, as I am using really thick oil to help save the rings (1,000,000Kms will do some strange things to rings)

That's whats up. It must be true: the first 100 miles of a cars life is how it likes to be driven. Mine has also treated me well, especially at Laguna Seca...

I noticed that with the Caterham also a while back when I tuned one, its almost like PD wanted to make it different from most cars just because its has a bike engine...

I found that with a FC gearbox set to top out at about 140mph it really came alive with a lot more rapid changes:tup:

Who knows the real one may be like this but somehow doesnt seem right does it?! I do remember thinking they might have done it to kurb wheelspin as it weighs so little...?

Bikes do have high 1st gears, sure, but then the gears are evenly spaced. I haven't found the actual gearing yet, but it uses the FireBlade gearbox unmodified, so I find it hard to believe this gearing is correct.

Close ratio 'box is ideal, tops out at about 140 (high enough for track use with those aerodynamics...), with even gaps between the gears, but yes, wheelspin raises its ugly head in 1st & 2nd then, which is thankfully absent with 'stock' gearing.

What I'd like is 60mph in first, then 20mph increments per gear... We can all dream, can't we?

Very quick update as I'm off to Leeds with work for a week, so I only had a chance to grab a dozen or so laps in each car last night.

How do you find the URL address for a single post??? :dunce:

(Edit:Thanks Goose...)

Scaff: sorry we had to move on, but we needed to keep the momentum going. I was concerned about people losing interest...

Let me know what day you are due back, and I may be able to give you a chance to post late. Tricky with the points, though.

Click the post number, and it will bring it up on its own, then just copy/paste the address form the address bar

We had some delays in finding some containers to ship the cars in one move, though the workers at the shipping company tried getting us to stuff the Ginetta on top of the GTO...All three cars are loaded up and on their way to the states as we speak.

well im having a problem with the RS6,since ive changed the turbos, the turbos have started losing boost the higher up the rev range from 2500rpm you go till you get to around 5500rpm where it is on no boost at all till the redline, where as with the stock K04 turbos it ran full boost the whole time:guilty: also doesnt feel as strong too
Stock K04 turbos
Stage 1
thought it was an air flow problem so stuck on a racing intercooler and was still losing boost
then i decided to do a drag racing test down the le mans straight with the RS6 and my little brother in stock E55,in first and second when the audi had more boost it pulled away fine and kept a lead, but from 3rd onwards where the cars are higher in the rev range and the audi losing boost the e55 just went by the audi :(
only thing i can think of is to keep it on the stock turbos but then it will be extremely fair behind everyone else and not be competive
my proposal to eddie and the stewards and only trackday people is a change of car.
A 2005 BMW M5 with the same upgrades as the RS6(racing flywheel, sports clutch,S1 tyres and NA stage 1)

See if you can get a rental :D I'm sure they won't notice the shagged tyres and smoking clutch...

(I don't mind. Any one else?)

ah the joys of rentals
story time
my uncles mate once hired a car (a BMW 320)when he was in holiday in germany and took it to the nurburgring and did 3 laps and the suspension failed  , took it back and just said erm i think the suspension broke when i was driving on the motorway and he got away with it

Oh, and Holden, assuming no-one complains, set the car up as if you'd taken it to Suzuka with the rest of us, so with a Suzuka mod and a Laguna mod. 👍 ok?

Edit: That's really sad: I liked that big old Audi there :(

yea i said that it was having the same mods as the RS6 at this stage ie the racing flywheel, sports clutch(Suzuka mod),s1 tyres, sports exhaust and stage 1 NA(Laguna mod since the RS6 had a stage 1 turbo) :)

Official Stewards Decision (due to majority vote)

The change to a 2005 BMW M5 will be allowed. Please bring it to the scutineering tent for your stickers.
