The more I'm playing this the more determined I am to get it. It's good fun and the dogfights with the other aircraft are great fun, even if the missles have auto-lock but there is a cannon that you can use. Although it's difficult. The variety of planes from different countries intrest me too, the fact that I can be flying a Harrier and in the full game then fly the Eurofighter (which is based not far from my house) is a prospect I quite like the sound of. It just seems a fun game to play, its currently on my rental list but I can either me or my Brother buying this game when it's released.

There's about 70 or so planes on the game, which is pretty cool considering people were expecting 50.

ON the PC version, you can have custom pain schemes, the game comes preloaded with many too. Obviously it won't be as simple(!) to do them on the PS3 as it is on the PC, but we can always hope. 👍

I'd love to see them do something along the lines of what EA did with there Paint booth. From what I hear, the paint schemes on the PC version are basically DDS files so that would be great if you could make you own on your PC and somehow transfer it to the console.

I was walking by the refurbished EB game the other afternoon and they had HAWX on the 360 set up. I come from Aviation High so that my be the reasoning in the choice of game. Anyway, this is in full HD on a Bravia and my god, it looks so smooth. Everything is so realistic, what got me was this - in a certain plane (I forget which) depending on the speed the wings go in and out:D. The cockpit view it pretty good and the outside is even better.

Also DN, I noticed the plane had a Custom Paint Scheme.

Thanks for the update... and the footage I've seen so far has been really impressive. 👍

The plane would be a F14 either a Tomcat or Bomb Cat.

I completed HAWX yesterday, a great game to be honest. I can't really think of many flaws with it, the story line is pretty solid although a little bit obvious but then again what Tom Clancy's story line isn't obvious these days? As I said previously there was one main plane I was looking forward too, the Eurofighter Typhoon, especially since the UK squadron is based not far from where I live. Although I wasn't dissappointed with the plane I also know quite a lot of elements were wrong with it. As a example the winglets on the front nose cone do not rotate like they do on the game, in real life it is very subtle movements. Also the cockpit, although nice looking, is wrong. I know as I had the lucky opportunity to sit in the real thing. I understand the possible reasoning as to why the cockpit isn't a accurate rendition of the real thing, probably because they aren't allowed to make a accurate cockpit of a plane still in service. Atleast thats what I think anyway.

Also, online mode is pretty intresting there certainly some options which can spice things up a bit. Such as; only JStrike missles (other than cannon), only cannon, then you have things such as only flying in Assistance on or off and being stuck to cockpit view etc. Also then the in-game perks online such as altitude reduction for the opposing team work well too. Co-Op mode works well too, gives you the opportunity to fly with your buddies or people you don't know and work as a team. Quite good fun.

Just make sure you get a head set for it, nothing is better than quoting those epic Top Gun lines as you roar through the skies.

Hey matey do you play il2? On HL? I have played it for 4-5 years online, and about 8 years offline since original IL2 and cant wait for Il2BoP on ps3 it looks amazing. Also of course Olegs BoB game, whenever that comes out...It's almost as funny as GT5. Thanks for posting the trailer.

Yeah, I played it on HL. I'm not the best pilot out there, but I plan to get into it again. just need to get the X52 and rudders, and maybe Track IR (cost is putting me off ATM though). 👍

Filling in the void left by AC6 being an xbox exclusive title I bought this yesterday, played the first two missions and loved it. A bonus for me is a certain plane is included... the Su-47 Berkut. God if only Russia would make that a fully operational fighter instead of an experimental testbed.

Nice to see Ace Combat will return to a Sony platform though.

Ace Combat 7. I saw something about it and yes I can't remember where. Hopefully the upcoming GDC (March 25) will shed some light. If not E3 is just around the corner.

Let me guess, you saw something about a page in PSM mentioning Ace Combat, right?

ok if you find yourself on there soon look for me man

i dont use x52 or Tir or anything fancy, just a cyborg evo/hat switch with newview to smooth the panning, and i do just fine. It's really changing though man with the mods that have come along.

I'm gonna download a demo of this soon, and eventually I'll get the full game. But from what I've heard, it's just brilliant.

Ace Combat in PSM?
I not going to say yes or no and its possible. Will GDC and or E3 shed some light? We can only hope so.
Does anyone know if there's something(patch) planned to allow users of the Ace Combat 5 HORI Flight Stick on HAWX?

I've been surprised by the success of this game, its currently flyin' high (way above KZ2) in my local Game store charts. I've downloaded the demo earlier, gonna give it a blast later! 👍

I have to say I'm loving the game, for those who are thinking about buying it, just do it! I can't think why you would regret it.

I actually managed to find two stores with the game, but its very pricey at both. I plan on visiting the local targets and see if they have it much cheaper.

I like this a lot, flying high sky up to a maximum altitude of 16000 then shooting down doing barrel rolls in the process is fun, especially when you add the fact that you can fire missiles which kill anything in one shot and a superb cockpit view. But I just get bored of it. I don't know why. Perhaps it's just me. Go ahead and buy it if you like the look of it, that's all I can say.

I can't wait to see some of the videos from this...

I saw that earlier on the PS Blog, would love to enter it's a shame its only for US and Canada. Why doesn't EU get stuff like that?!

Sony is biast to the US.

Yeah.... that's why the GT Academy contest was for NA users only and not Europe... oh wait... never mind. ;)

If those spreading the myth that EU is always "left out" spent as much time checking the facts as much as they spend time complaining, they would discover EU PS3/PSN users have gotten a great deal of exclusive content and contests... unfortunately they most often only look at what they don't get and neglect to mention all the stuff they do get that other regions do not. :indiff:

To be honest I wasn't complaining, I was just pointing out that the EU tends not to get competition like the one above, the only competition I can think that was for EU was, as mentioned before, the GT Academy. Sadly I wasn't interested in that, as for this competition I am interested in as well as the Motorstorm 2 Photomode Competition, however both are US and Canada only which is a shame.

bought this game yesterday, and it has me hooked just as tightly as Ace Combat series.. :D that says a lot IMHO. The radio chatter is nice, variety of aircrafts and missions and weapon loads.. perfect. now, all I need to do is master the OFF-mode to pwn some bogeys.. :D

Well, I saw this today for a decent price but I thought I should get a second opinion first.
Looked around at a few forums and reviews and this game sounds truly horrible in comparison to Ace Combat.

The main issues that people bring up:
  • Horrible physics model, no attempt at being realistic and all of the planes feel basically the same.
  • Assistance off mode, it takes away too many useful tools and also makes it difficult to target enemies. For example, if you target an enemy behind its very difficult to make it target an enemy in front because the camera is viewing behind. Hard to aim cannon and other complaints such as disorientation.
  • A few notable errors such as the MiG-25 actually being a MiG-31. Yes, this is a minor detail but you kind of expect accurate details with a name like Tom Clancy.
  • Unspectacular plot, cutscenes, voice acting, etc. Not such a big deal.
  • Frustrating levelling system that becomes difficult to continue beyond level 27.

Can anyone clarify these problems? I really want to play a new flight game as I wait for a new Ace Combat but from the sounds of things this game is not up to par. I like at least some sense of realism at least to AC levels and this game so far sounds no where near that term.
My other option is buying Ace Combat 5 for PS2 as I never got around to buying it. The reason for this was when it came out originally I didn't have the money and never got around to getting it, I then got the PSP Ace Combat and never felt the need for a new flight game till now.

I'm kind of leaning towards getting AC5 especially because its essentially just an upgraded AC4, which I loved. But first I wanted to know if the above issues are true and if anyone could still recommend this game at all?

The main issues that people bring up:
  • Horrible physics model, no attempt at being realistic and all of the planes feel basically the same. Not true. some planes are more agile or less agile, faster or slower, able to withstand different levels of damage, others stall easily, others are stable, some are slow to revocer from stall, others are faster..
  • Assistance off mode, it takes away too many useful tools and also makes it difficult to target enemies. For example, if you target an enemy behind its very difficult to make it target an enemy in front because the camera is viewing behind. Hard to aim cannon and other complaints such as disorientation. Boohoohoo. Crybabies whining.. you can get loads of EXP easily if you master OFF mode and do the challenges related to it.
  • A few notable errors such as the MiG-25 actually being a MiG-31. Yes, this is a minor detail but you kind of expect accurate details with a name like Tom Clancy.indeed it is a small detail. externally they do look like eachother a lot, which probably caused this glitch.
  • Unspectacular plot, cutscenes, voice acting, etc. Not such a big deal.
  • Frustrating levelling system that becomes difficult to continue beyond level 27.this is where multiplayer/online steps in. easy exp again, especially in the ranked matches.

My other option is buying Ace Combat 5 for PS2 as I never got around to buying it. The reason for this was when it came out originally I didn't have the money and never got around to getting it, I then got the PSP Ace Combat and never felt the need for a new flight game till now.

But first I wanted to know if the above issues are true and if anyone could still recommend this game at all?Ace Combat Zero.. well, I have it, and played it through many times and still haven't got all paintjobs or planes. but in the end it will have few goof planes that overshadow everything else, and even on hardest level it's rather easy to beat. not to mention the futuristic plot that is stolen from some anime.. go for it, especially for the soundtrack. the rest is pretty meh.

As far as HAWX, I can't confirm the validity of those issues... as I have not yet got around to picking this game up (I definitely plan to), but the reviews so far are certainly mixed, and typically worse than AC6, AC0, and AC5.

For example, here are the ratings IGN gave each of these games:

For me, AC5 remains my personal favorite, and despite being close to five years old, it still holds up well... so if you are a fan of the genre, and have not yet played AC5, that should be a must buy IMO. 👍

That said, there are so few flight sim/simcade games for consoles anyway that if you are a fan of the genre, I suspect you would find enough in HAWX to easily make it worth your while.

HAWX is ok. Strategy to me is more important than graphical content in this game. The tacmap, radar, awacs, and hud can be misleading at times when it comes to priority targets. The emotion in command voicing is over the top and cheesy. Especially in one player missions. Progression is slow going unless you have a online squadron to meet the TDM (team death match) challenges. RDS kills do not register 90% of the time on air targets upon completion of missions. So meeting the required number of RDS kills at the elite level will take a long time. HAWX boards make mention of the RDS problem but no explanations or patches are currently available to address the problem that I have found.

I'm currently halfway to level 29 (2 bar Major rank) and have all the elite missions completed. If anybody here from GTPlanet plans on forming a squadron in the future to accumulate TDM points I'd surely be interested in joining.

I'm sorry but this is a pretty large problem with the game (if its true). What if you want to engage someone attacking from in front of you? You don't want to be messing about with camera views.

I think I'm going to try and find AC5 first beacuse first of all its cheaper and secondly I know its good. HAWX appears to have a few too many issues that I don't like the sound of and the reviews from it (as has been mentioned) don't sound too great.
