To turn off your PS2, a friend of mine always pushes the button in the front. I always push it in the back. He says it's bad for it to push the back switch, I don't remember why. What do you think?

The only times I've ever used the back switch is when I'm putting it away for a while (i.e. a month or so). The button on the front essentially puts the PS2 into "standby" mode, but keeps an inkling of power running through the system.

Here's how I see it: Picture a light bulb. Lasts for quite a while, yeah? Thousands of hours, even if you leave it turned on 24/7. But start flipping it on and off repeatedly, and it'll blow in short order. When power is reintroduced to an electrical system, there's always a small surge that can cause a slight "shock" to the components (i.e. the filament in a light bulb). This surge is so small as to be virtually unmeasurable, but it's there.. and over time, can add to the wear and tear of the components in the system, which may cause it to break down before it's time. By leaving the main power on, and simply putting it in "standby" mode, it prevents this.

I saw something similar concerning computers not too long ago. The experts said that it's actually better for the hardware in your PC if you simply leave it running all the time, rather than turning it on and off repeatedly, due to the stress this causes the components.

Granted, this isn't something you really need to worry about.. turning it off with the back switch isn't going to make your PS2 explode, but the cumulative effects of using it will eventually shorten it's lifespan.

So, going back to my first sentence.. I only turn off the main power when I'm putting it into storage (i.e. back under the entertainment center), or if there's an especially nasty lightning storm overhead. Otherwise, I just use the front button.

We have a smart guy on our hands! 👍

Although when people complain the PS2 dies itself, no. So far I have turned my PS2 on and off at least 2 times a week everyday. Mine is one of the 1st ones released.

I just turn mine off with the back switch. Saves time, and all in all, probably won't do anything to the PS2.

Since I'm always playing through my TV card, the PS2 is connected to an USB power switch, so when I turn off the PC, I also turn off the monitor, the scanner, speakers and every other imaginable (or unimaginable) peripheral I may (or may not) have connected at the time !... Works beautiful and saves a bundle on the power bill....

Does this mean that my answer is neither ?....

I dont like how you have to hold down the front button, but I have to. I have a PStwo. :dopey:

With my old PS2, though, I always used the back switch, for reasons stated above.

Heh, I have a friend that always turns it off from the back, but I always turn it off with the front button.:)

My swapping games process (if in a game):
- Press RESET button when in main menu of game
- When blue light comes on press it to OPEN DRAWER
- Replace disks and close drawer
- Wait for game to load

My turning off process (if in a game):
- Press RESET button when in main menu of game
- When blue light comes on press it to OPEN DRAWER
- Remove disk and close drawer, then wait a second or two
- Press and hold RESET button until standby mode occurs
- Switch switch at back of console to OFF

I used to press the button in the back before I knew you could shut it off from the front.

I voted the button in the front.

I turn off the front switch, let it go into standby, and then turn off the back switch. :dopey:

Hiya! :D :O  Meow! (='.'=)

I do that too! 👍 But the reason I do that is because I have been taught to turn it off that way AND my friends and relatives do the same thing. :O

And yup you should always make sure to do this if you have the HDD installed, because when you push the power button with it installed it takes a little longer because it parks the heads of the HDD. So if you just hit the switch at the back you probably risk corrupting the HDD.

I use the standby button and then I unplug the machine from the wall socket.

I use the front button, then I use the back switch, then I turn off the electrical breaker to that section of the house, then I saw down the power pole outside.

Oh wait, that's for the Christmas tree. I just use the front button.

I turn the back switch off when I am done. Been doing that since I got one of the first PS2 that were released. Still have it too. All my friends and family do the same thing.

Making a poor post just to insult a poor post that was created to insult a useful (yet sarcastic *I hope*) post is pathetic.

I set it on standby then turn it off at the back. I tried leaving it on stand-by but my parents kept complaining.

[OFFTOPIC] But I do leave my Hi-fi and TV constantly on stand-by in my room :D [/OFFTOPIC]
