I'm watching the best of top gear at the moment and its funny how they have censored out the smoke coming from their pipes they smoked indoors... the pixelation follows the smoke as it puffs out over the crowd and James' head is obliterated! it says censored in big letters on the screen...

Gosh talk about nanny state!

Knowing Top Gear they made it as obvious as possible for a joke, I woudln't worry too much, It didn't really need to be done in such manner, it was probably the most comical way of doing it.

Bionic Woman. Knight Rider. And now....Top Gear? NBC, America's remake network, has ordered a pilot of an Americanized Top Gear. Expect to see all the usual Top Gear conventions, including three presenters; a masked Stig-like driver; a private test track; taping in a hangar before a live audience; and (probably D-List) celebs driving midsize cars. Unfortunately, you won't see the program's British hosts, Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond. And this is where it gets dicey. You see, those guys are the reason Top Gear is what it is. They're clever and witty, and they endear themselves to gearheads with segments like Clarkson's hilarious Peel P50 "review" (it's pasted after the jump). NBC's going to have a hard time finding US hosts who can replicate that vibe without being relentlessly annoying in the process. As BBC remakes go, we truly hope that a US-flavored Top Gear succeeds like The Office, but we're concerned that it might just turn into another Coupling.

NO LIEK!

It won't be the same without Jezza and the like, however, I'm interested to hear what NBC would do with the show. But then I ask myself, if they can show the episodes relatively in-tact on BBC America, why not ship them over and just play the regular stuff on NBC?

Finally took the time to finish off the last four episodes of the latest series. I must say I'm glad to see they shifted the focus back to cars, instead of continuing to try to top the last stunt they did again and again. :)

The Ascari A10 is amazing, the new M3 is even more awesome than I thought, and the SD1 drifting around the wet skidpad sans passenger-side rear door was classic...

I say they're welcome to try, but I'm not placing any bets on NBC's success.

That'd be too easy... not to mention the UK or TG doesn't exactly make the US look that great as all us Americans know how we are 1337. xD

I imagine the US version will be majorly US car based, with a small smattering of European or Japanese content.

I also think it is destined for failure. Maybe not ratings wise, but quality wise in comparison to the original.

Why does the US have to have it's own version!? Why not just show the UK version and get over the fact it's not American based?

Thats just a bad idea. I really like Top Gear as it is. 👍 So does this means Top Gear UK can't make fun of the Americans anymore? (the part in the news about the eco car of the year was pretty hilarious )
Also, does anyone know about the Top Gear AU?

I dont see why all these other Top Gear copies are appearing everywhere. The real Top Gear will always be the same, no matter what these copies do. Why cant other countries just air the real Top Gear instead?

They're advertising on the TV now for presenters. In my opinion, I think the whole thing will suck. They've tried driving programs out here before and they all end up sucking.

Why can't they just do and American and an Australian tour each year. Two weeks in each country is more than enough time to put together a 2-hour special twice a year.

They've done fine on BBC America, left in all of the "offensive" parts about Americans. My guess would be that they could send the same show to the US with minimal modifications... The only thing I'd suspect that they'd have to do differently, maybe, would be to include a few more "global" cars (those sold in the US or Europe) and go from there.

Given that the lines are begining to blur more and more with the product lineups in the US and Europe, they could just mention that we get this version, or that version, for whatever other reason...

Hell, maybe that means the TG boys come to America a bit more often and give our stuff a try!

According to Jeremy they would reshoot certain bits of the show for the American audience. I've never seen an American episode, so I can't compare, but I'd guess that some of the comments are changed, perhaps not nessesarily the jokes but I'd say they would all be studio bits. Jezza just said they had to reshoot certain scenes and that the US audience was the only one they had to do that for.

Yeah, when they did it the comments were usually a little less scathing over Americans and what we do. They'd usually mention something about how this car was probably coming over, or if it was related to something we had, or whatever.

They only shot a few "Americanized" episodes for the Discovery Channel, everything else has been un-edited.

-> I have also heard on the news that NBC is having a really a hard time recruiting TV hosts for its Top Gear USA. So maybe, is this our chance to jump in? YSS, M5P, Top Hat, Joey, etc. :D

Hey, if NBC wants to give me a call, I'd be happy to live in California...

...They were talking on the TRS forums the other day about having Jay Leno host the show, which sounds like a good idea. Problem is, Jay is "retiring" in 2009, so that may not work too well after all...

I don't know if I'd want Jay, it doesn't sound like a good fit for some reason for me. I can just see the UK comparing and laughing at whoever our hosts are and how they don't even come close their hosts. I'm sure I would anyway.

^ Jay would a good candidate, and us two on the sidelines. :sly:

Leno would be a great choice, he knows his cars and his personality is similar to Clarkson so it would work.

You know what the best thing would be.... have UK top gear go over there and do an entire series based in the US.... so they test American cars, have American guests and do American challenges... would be as hilarious as the time they went to Miami but all season long! Could you imagine Clarkson with an American audience.. he would get linched!

The thing that makes the TG guys so great is that they don't care that they're on TV, and Leno just doesn't fit into that category.

It would be interesting if they got Jesse James to host it. I have a feeling he would just review old muscle cars all the time, though.

^ That will upset the balance of the show if JJ hosts the show and will end up like Hot Rod TV. :indiff:

-> Jerry Seinfeld would be a good host because he likes cars too (Porsches). I also nominate Chris Titus (Muscle Car) and Paul Newman?

^ Experiece counts thou, and he STILL races! He can still kick butt on any of us!

^ I overlooked Tim Allen! :dunce:

-> The problem with Patrick is, he already has a top-rated show on ABC. For Tim, well, I don't know if he will go back to TV since he's a 'big-time' movie star. :indiff:

-> I say:

Jay Leno

Jerry Seinfeld

Chris Titus

:sly:

^ And likes cars too.

-> Alright, maybe nominating Seinfeld is a little off the mark. I just run out of ideas. :indiff:

Tim Allen? TIM ALLEN?

You mean Tim "I was once sentenced to life in prison for drug trafficking, but had it commuted to 3-7 years after I plea-bargained and squealed on everyone I ever knew" Allen?

Yes. That guy. That makes him what, double-cool?

I guess I like the way he thinks about cars, and I know for sure that hes got plenty of experience with racing them, which is always a bonus.

Some other guys I thought of last evening:

- Tyson Beckford: Hes a model, loves cars, and has his own tuning company I believe...

- Adam Corolla: Big Nissan fan, certainly as sarcastic as Clarkson. He hasn't done much since his talk so went off the air two years ago...

- Adrian Brody: I hear hes a big Porsche fan, too bad hes ugly.

- John Travolta (?):
Okay, he likes airplanes better, but I seem to recall him being rather into automobiles...
