The Commodore was rumoured to be given the El Camino label when the VE first came out.
Of course, these rumours fell through like any other time the Commodore was going to be exported to the US in big numbers. I hope the SS sells out in a heartbeat over there, it may just be the motivation they need to start selling more of the model line-up. It'll be interesting to see what they do considering V8SA are in talks over a second US round.

I'm looking hard at getting on but not until they get the manual trans in it in the states!!

There's always talk that the ute is going to be exported Stateside. Nothing has ever come of it. Which is odd, because it's the sort of vehicle that could easily find a gap in the market over there.

I agree, but then it would slice into the market of the "trucks" which are built in the states and that would be a big nut kick to both manufacture's, specially one owned by the government,

But I have always found it particularly stupid by both manufactures that they never really exported the products, the odd falcon went to South Africa and Mexico,in the '60s , obviously Holden sent the Monaro to the u.k and the states, but why ford didn't sent the falcon utes and sedans world wide for the last 20 years is beyond me,

It was pretty much a done deal as GM was having a contest for the public to name it. Then it was canceled when the bankruptcy hit.

And with so many first car buyers going for Ford Rangers and that type RWD light truck, the V6 Falcon/Commodore Utes with a tray or bed would clean up. You could easily drop any V8 in it and if the Eco-Boost 4 was sold in the Falcon, instant sleeper. And let's not start on Fords turbo inline6. Just plain NASTY! :)

I am a HUGE fan of the utes in general, something about them is just flat out sexy.

Not so much anymore, both the Ranger and Dodge Dakota have been discontinued due to slow sales.

I suppose we're getting a bit off topic here, but anyway....the Commodore is still sold in South Africa as a Chevrolet Lumina (as is the Ute) but the pricing is mental - well specced 3 series/ poverty spec 5 series country, so it's always been a marginal seller.

As for Ute's never making it to the States, it may be that they could have sold well, but it's likely it would have been at the cost of other inhouse brands. Ford wouldn't want people buying Ford Utes at the expense of other domestically made, higher margin Ford trucks for example.

Erebus testing steering solutions ahead of Darwin.
Erebus Motorsport will today use its first full private test day of the season to find a solution to the steering issues that hampered its campaign in Austin, Texas.
The Lee Holdsworth and Tim Slade driven E63 AMGs both suffered lengthy delays on Saturday at the Circuit of the Americas when their power steering pumps overheated and shut down.
The packaging issue, which had surfaced as early as the Adelaide season opener, was flared by Austin’s high ambient temperatures and can be expected to repeat over the coming Darwin and Townsville events if a solution is not sorted.
The team was allowed a temporary fix for Sunday’s Austin races in the form of a ducting tube that took air to the pump directly from the grill; an area which is usually sealed under the car’s aerodynamic homologation.
“We’re trying a couple of different configurations (today),” Erebus team manager David Stuart confirmed to Speedcafe.com of the pump’s positioning in the engine bay.
“Depending on the results of that we’ll need to get back to V8 Supercar and see what they’ll allow us to do and then see what we can do as a team to solve the problem.”

Well, we know the guy running the show isn't much of a racing fan. It just not cool for a customer who just ordered a Falcon and all this news comes out about axing the Falcon. Even if they'll only own it for 4/5 years. Not so much for someone who is ordering an FPV GT.

This seriously bites the big end!

Please. Ford barely make an effort as it is now. I might have been loyal to them in the past, but I honestly think that if they're going to continue like this and let their accountants run their motorsport division, then the sport will probably be better off without them. Get rid of them, and let a new manufacturer - someone who will make the effort - have a go.

So let me get this straight Ford moves from Aussie to China because of losing sales yet again... Thus Ford is or has a strong chance of leaving V8 supercars?

In short, Much of this came about with COTF/FIA/slow sales for big Australian sedans. The name was changed from Australian V8 Supercars to V8 Supercars for global appeal by FIA to make V8s an International series. Please, anyone add more info to clarify if I'm incorrect.

I don't know what the future holds for V8s as a series in Australia.

No, Ford are terminating all of their domestic production, as it simply isn't profitable. And since this is the only market were the Falcon gets sold, there won't be any new models of Falcon after 2016. That means that if Ford are to stay in V8 Supercars, they will have to change to a new model. There has been some speculation that they might switch to the Fusion or Mustang.

The series was given the "International" tag to enable it to expand out to other markets. Until they get that title, the series was limited to one round outside Australia and New Zealand. Now they have much more freedom to set up other international races. There has been talk of going to a second circuit in America, joining the support bill for the Macau Grand Prix, and setting up new races in India, Indonesia (Bali), Singapore, Thailand and Mexico, with various degrees of seriousness.

I'll miss Australia being an Australian motorsport, I still have pride in the old V8 days (2000 - 2006 (wasn't really old enough to understand it before 2000)).

I don't mind the now V8s (the new cars are pretty sexy) but I cannot find that spark I got from
2000 - 2006.

Volvo tipped to join V8 Supercars grid.
Volvo is the latest manufacturer being linked to a V8 Supercars Championship campaign as practical deadlines loom for any fresh 2014 entries.
Speculation surrounding new marques has been rife following V8 Supercars Commission chairman Mark Skaife’s declaration at a Nissan Motorsport function in Austin last month that he expects “some really important announcements” on the matter later in the year.
Garry Rogers Motorsport has been at the centre of new manufacturer talk for more than 12 months and is said to be the team of choice for a possible Volvo assault.
Speedcafe.com understands that a deal between the two parties could be complete as soon as next week.
Volvo Australia is currently denying interest in V8 Supercars, but has recently shown a strong desire to add sporting prowess to its long standing image of safety and reliability.
Its actions have included the commissioning of a limited run of high performance S60 road cars from global Volvo Motorsport tuning house Polestar that are set to arrive in the country later this month.
The S60 sedan model appears a perfect fit for V8 Supercars’ Car of the Future chassis, sharing similar key dimensions with Nissan’s recently homologated Altima.

That's a Holden team switching, right? :p

Well aside from DJR there aren't any Ford teams left. So, yep.

It's weird it went from Ford/Holden to 4 mfg and loss now of a major player.

I can picture a BMW running in V8SC's lineup of cars and teams. BMW should do this move. 👍

Funny, when I posted that other article this morning, I thought, "that's cool and all. But it's only speculation and rumors, nothing will eventuate from it. " Love the look of the S60 can't wait to see how it looks in V8 Supercar form.

Now, if only BMW would jump on the bandwagon...

And Audi.

I thought the same about the S60 shape. Me thinks it'll look similar to the Altima because of the overall shape and the headlights viewed from the side. If they run the Polestar Blue, it'll still fit in with the Fujitsu livery.

And definitely if Audi feels an itch, they too should scratch it. :)

Oh yeah, and the Hyundai Genesis V6 & possibly V8 sedan arrives here next year. Hmmm...
