The Volvo S60 concept headed for the Detroit auto show in January carries a heavy dose of fantasy features while offering a strong hint of the 2010 production car.

Volvo says much of the basic appearance of the concept sedan will show up in the production version, and the car's lines are a bit more dramatic than the current S60.

But in true concept fashion, the show car is fitted with a few elements that seem unlikely to make it to production, such as the headlights that create a silhouette of two miniature Viking longboats sailing in tandem. Volvo also has said it plans to outfit the interior with a center console made of crystal.

A new safety feature on the concept will make it to production. Called Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake, the system tries to prevent crashes by alerting the driver with an audible warning and a flashing red light, meant to look like a taillight. If that fails, the car automatically applies full braking power.

A turbocharged, direct-injection 1.6-liter 180-hp four-cylinder engine powers the concept.

Inside, where past Volvo concepts have pioneered ideas like the floating center console that eventually appeared in production cars, the seats are attached to the center console and don't touch the floor.

The concept rides on seven-spoke, 20-inch wheels, and the brakes have been dressed up with bronze calipers.

We're due for a new S60. The redesign of the current car, launched in 2000, has been delayed as Volvo has changed spending priorities.

Linky.

Um...wow. What a mess. Its like someone took an X6 and hammered in some GS350 for good measure. Why does it look like it gets wider as you go farther up the side of the car?

I know I said it about the Aztek, but that is probably one of the most haphazard looking designs I've ever seen. I do like the mechanicals though.

I'm missing the viking longboats in the headlights... maybe it is in the light that the headlights project?

It's like a Mondeo. But not.

I mean, It's half stunningly beautiful and half blindingly hideous. What the hell happened? Granted, this is a concept and will be toned down...I think once the extroverted Concept styling gets productionized, it won't be so bad.

Front wheels forwards it needs some work, but the rest is very pretty. I can't say I didn't say WTF out loud when the front photo punched me in the face, but other than the mess up front I'm aboard. I like!

The rear would look a bit better if they gave the glass roof panel straight edges, rather than the indents they have now.

It wouldn't take many changes for that to be an absolutely stunning looking car. If the front looked less goofy, it'd be a winner.

Oh, and if car manufacturers stopped bringing out concepts in bowel-movement brown. Brown is not cool. The seventies are overrated.

The XC60 was neutered quite a bit when going from concept to production, so hopefully the same happens here. There are a number of good ideas on this car, but they have that off-putting concept car pizazz, especially in the front.

A lot of nice curves, and they all roll together well, but taken as a whole.... It's not even a cohesiveness issue. Each section blends to the next, and the proportions are good, but there's something about it that just isn't right.

Oh, wait.

I got it.

It's ugly. Another hatchet job, only this one involved only one person and they melted it some just before putting it on stage.

I don't care what they do. Get. Another. S60. Now.

The current one has been on the road since 2001. In that same time period Audi has had FOUR DIFFERENT A4s on the road. Seriously Volvo, get on your **** and get this thing redesigned.

Well, if their main competitor is crosstown rival Saab, they only have to worry about the single 9-5, so...

This car would look great if it didn't have Wedge-Butt. Why can't designers use a line that's parallel to the floor? They could've done that, teardropped the back, cut it off, and have themselves a super kammback design.

I think its cool in a progressive Swede way, but it isn't as though I'm shopping the Volvo catalog very often. At least they can score points on innovation, right?

Looks like a hamster. Some of the styling elements are pretty cool, although others are just plain strange. Although I think Volvo put a pretty rear on that machine.

Wow, I really love that. Carmakers are beginning to get their act together (styling wise) now. I'm sick of looking at grey boring shapes on the road everywhere... so this is an EPIC win. 👍.

That's one of my complaints with alot of vehicles nowadays. I believe it's the trend for this decade.

What the hell? What the hell is that a picture of? What is that thing?

It surely isn't a Volvo, because that car looks like it's styled with flames just like every other car does since Bangle came along. The only company I can think of off the top of my head that has a truly genuine design language is Cadillac. But this...Volvo...is hideous. Volvos should be square, and that is that.

Err, come again?

I dig.

And guys, this thing isn't that bad. Okay, it's got one poorly done corner. The headlights and the vent they flank are the weak points that unfortunately draw your eye, but ignoring that, the initial photo posted is not a flattering angle. Take a look at this one, the front proportions don't seem so bad anymore:

I still like it, even more so with those new images and the interior. The front end still needs to be less weird though.

I don't think it's THAT bad, it's just the front that's very awkward, and that it definately doesn't look like a Volvo at all.

Everything in front of the rearmost point of that car look horrible. Still.

How can they get the back end so right and yet still get the front so damn wrong? It looks stylish and modern from the back, but looking at the front it looks like some cheap, melted Mondeo. With down's syndrome.

Bring the headlights further round the front so it looks a bit more aggressive and it'll be brilliant. The interior looks simply stunning, I hope they keep it exactly as it is.
