July 19, 2015--Detroit, Michigan--The Michigan International Raceway has filed a formal complaint against Virtual Reality Racing following being left off of the 2016 Straight Talk IndyCar Series calendar. A statement from the venue explained why the step was made:
The officials and organizers of Michigan International Speedway feel as if there have been preferential treatment towards select venues that made it onto the calendar. VRR had made it clear to us that there were issues around the venue, specifically around the garage area, which need small renovations to aid the technology around the Dallara DW12 chassis. We agreed to terms that would see us make those changes and be ready in time for a fall 2016 date, a date that has since been filled and surrounded by international events in the series. We are filing this complaint not in an effort to join the 2016 calendar, but to secure a race in 2017 and beyond. We feel that we can bring an exciting race to the Straight Talk IndyCar Series and there is a viable fanbase here in Michigan and the Great Lakes Canadian region to make this event succeed without altering the existing events in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, or Pennsylvania. This complaint has been filed directly to Virtual Reality Racing in a hope to revive and secure our communication and stable working relationship.
Attempts to contact VRR officials have been unsuccessful thus far.
