Weight Balance Issues

Ok, just because a car has a mid engine doesn't mean it has perfect weight balance. For example the RX-7 FC has 50/50 weight balance because of its light rotary engine.

I have been trying to think of ways to change my 91 mr2's weight balance from 44/56 to near 50/50. Any IDEAS???

If any of you asks I am setting it to drift:D

where is the battery mounted? If it is in the back you can mount it somewhere in the front of the car. Its an old trick used in FR (only in FR's you move the batt to the back) to help with balance....

Move anything else you can from the back to the front.....

Do mr2's have anything in the front boot. If not you could put some weight in that or something. Whatever, i dont know much about cars.

First off, the RX-7 had 50/50 wieght distribution, as well as the RX-8, due to not only the light rotary engine, but because they were placed behind the front wheels, mid-engine. Mazda was only able to do that because the rotary engines are much smaller than a comparable piston engine.

For your MR-2, why would you want to take weight off the back? By having more wieght over the drive wheels, you get more traction. Also, if you load the hood(erm, front trunk) with wieght, you'll have to re-learn how the car drives, and it'll slow the car down. Sounds like a stupid plan to me...just learn how to drive the car as-is. Or get a RX-7 or RX-8.

It doesn't matter with MRs. The point of an MR is that by placing the heaviest components (engine, transmission) as close as possible to the centre of mass of the vehicle, you reduce the necessary turning moment required to turn the car.

You want to think twice about tridting an MR2. They are really hard. They want to spin out, and it's really hard to avoid it. Even Tsuchiya spun out in an MR2. Unlike a car like the S14, which is very stable, the MR2 rewuires precise, small, inputs to the controls to even come near controlling it, and any mistake will have you looking at the rubber you just laid.

Which model is a '91? SW20?

Reminds me of this video where a kid was launching an MR2 and ended up swerving into a group of people in a parking lot, and hit a jetta.

When a car is balanced the right way, it's not just front and rear. It's all four corners weighing in the same. The car is set on four scales, one under each wheel, weight is then added to balance the entire vehicle. A reminder, Don't forget to put an amt. equal to your body weight in the driver's seat before you set it up.

Yeah i saw that, dumbass should have hit the brake and went the other way. I also saw a camero street race video where the driver got off hit 2nd and hit the crowd of people.

how about you learn how to drive before you worry about things like that. every young driver spends all of their time and money focusing on mods, when they cant drive for ****. you may think you can drive, but you really cant. its not personal, dont take offense.

in your car, you could lap a track in less time than ferraris, m3s, etc. its pretty pathetic, but thats how much driver skill matters.

I agree sadly, I thought I could drive when I was younger but I couldn't, I made stupid mistakes that I really wish I wouldn't have

why drift with an MR? they're tail happy and are best used for track/road/autox anyway

sell it then get into the market for an FR if you're serious about what you're getting into

Why would you drift anyways, you prolly have no idea what the hell your doing and your going to ruin a nice MR2. If you want to drift buy some crappy car for like 500 bucks so if you put it on a tree, pole, or a fence it won't be such a big deal.

well, yes, most young young drivers cant drive well (street driving), but this isnt what i was talking about. drive on the street for a couple years, and you will become much better. but all the street driving in the world will not make you a track master.

i didnt mean to imply you are a young dumb kid. im 19. it doesnt matter how old you are, if you never drive on the track, you probably arent going to know everything there is to know about performance driving. (ie, weight transfer, how to control it to your advantage, and the confidence you get when you know exactly what the car is doing, and where the weight will be next.)

this is the point i was trying to make. let me illustrate.

I have an 88 m3. with approximately 210hp, stock suspension, race pads, and race tires, I set a lap 2 seconds quicker than my buddy brian. brian also has an e30 m3, but he has $15k into his motor, and eibach prokit suspension. soft suspension, but the negative camber the drop gives you is a big advantage. his motor is insane. torque from 2.5, 8.4k topend from head and schricks. the motor whails, estimated 275hp.

this past summer i went to every open trackday i could make it to. maybe i spent up to $1000. the tracktime was so valuable though. now i am so cocky, i get to come onto boards and shoot my mouth off. $1k developing my driving skills allows me to lap quicker than someone that has $15k into their motor. who spent their money better? my car could be gone tomorrow, but what allows me to set fast laps is in my head, not my wallet.

fyi, i smoke ferraris ******.
