Is it a "driving" game or a "racing" game? I've not played any of the other GT's. Just this one. I was expecting lots of cars, lots of tracks and lots of heated battle racing. I was expecting it to be a serious "challenge" to win a race. It claims to be the "real driving simulator".

If it is supposed to be a driving game with lots of pretty cars it's done that, very, very well! If it's supposed to be a racing game with a serious challenge to win it fails miserably.

So what exactly is it supposed to be?

The real driving simulator like it advertised.

Says it in the title " real driving simulator"

If your car is much faster than the competition, it'll be a driving game. If you select properly, it'll be a racing game. If you want to race but blow past everyone before turn one, choose a slower car. It's as easy or as difficult as you want to make it.

Offline, its a driving game. The AI is too slow and not aggressive enough to be a challenge with anywhere near similar cars.

Online, its a racing game, you'll find all the challenge you could ever handle.

You can do what most of us do for better races, underpowered car or similar cars to opponents, all aids off, and comfort hard to sports hard tires then turn off the map. You can also race online with PP restrictions.

And to answer your question, it is a driving game. You have answered your own question from your original post, "the real driving simulator."

I think PD was leaving it up to the players to decide what they wanted. Beginners can (on most races) pick a well overpowered car and win.

For vetrens of the series or those who are good video game drivers you are more than welcome to pick a car equal to the opponents you'll be racing. They even tell you your typical opponents. Do that on sport tires only and it's much more of a challenge.

They could have done it forza's way and heavily restricted nearly all races? But people would complain about that too.

Don't agree with you on that one. Once I discovered the problem with the AI that's exactly what I've done. Select cars and significantly tune-down the HP. If the event advertised 400-450HP for the competition I'd go with 300-350HP. Well guess what? We'd hit a turn and because of driving skill I'd have the advantage. However, when we hit the straight the opponent had the advantage. So like you see in the videos where cars were battling neck and neck, that never happened in the game. It was catch up, take the lead, lose ground. Only a few of the many races offers a heated battle.

It's a driving game where you can only drive on racetracks, it's a driving game which career structure is based on racing, it's a driving game where you decide how to play it (which could mean you only want to race making it a racing game which does require, in my opinion, going online).
Basically it consists of cars and tracks and the rest is up to you (disregarding the whole game structure for now which is actually also 'optional' to complete aside from making money), what more do you really need?

Play online - then it's a real racing game.

For the sake of clarity, I highlighted the important part with Bold text.

That's exactly what PD did. Leave it up to the gamers. Problem is, some are to lazy, and others do not want to think.

because of driving skill I'd have the advantage

You have to realize that not everyone who plays this game is as good as the majority of people on GT Planet.

Do I think there should have been a selectable difficulty? Yes, but it's not like there aren't ways around it.

Thats not true Forza at least give you a choice and give you some real competition. Forza's Ai rips Gt5's by miles.
In Forza you can compete in any race with a lower classified car in that class. Seems you never played it huh?

Well here's something for ya..Coming soooon...

Driving, racing sim what else.

hahaha what a joke at least the cars roll over like they would in "real life" no lets put your beloved gt5 too the same test and get back too me..

Erm, those cars would not have rolled over like that. Unless they were on the moon. It looked silly.

If you like rolling and flipping, flinfinf cars then Forza is definitely the game for you

Rolling over cars in GT5 is in practical terms impossible unless racing tires are fitted.
There's something wrong there as in real life it's quite easy to roll over a car with stupid maneuvers (especially using the handbrake) or after hitting obstacles, even with cheap tires.

I've never actually played a game when rollovers were depicted exactly as in real life.

Motorstorm games, off-road and many arcade racers can actually make those things cool but I woudn't car much about these things TBH.

Rollovers are the consequence of certain maneuvers, improper handling of certain cars or the result of wrong suspension settings or mechanical failures. If GT5 is a simulator, it has to simulate properly this aspect of vehicle dynamics too, it can't be dismissed as something that is mostly seen in arcade games.

It's not really just "rollovers" though, it's a combination of a faulty tire model, improper suspension and collision dynamics and other things related to car physics that just have to be improved.

It was a great game before the started putting all these updates and patches on it...

I just call it a racing simulator.......

I have played many racing sims I don't think any game represents the car going on track better than GT5. It is just how a real car would behave on track. The crahes, rollover may be not so much but as I said these things are not too important. I will not be complaining if they improve it though lol

You have to realize that not everyone who plays this game is as good as the majority of people on GT Planet.

99% of people on message boards fail to understand that.

I'm wanting to say it was the show X-Play that responded to an email from a player who insisted that everybody wants a BMX video game. As they pointed out in response, it might seem like "everybody" wants it based solely on his interactions with his circle of friends who may indeed also want such a game, but the people you hang out with wanting a BMX game doesn't mean everybody else wants one.

Similarly, on message boards we often hear about how easy this or that game was, and several other board users will jump in saying the same thing, so it creates the illusion that it's a universal consensus. What these folks fail to understand or appreciate is that the folks likely to frequent a site like this one don't represent the average or typical player, but rather typically the top tier of players (though not exclusively). This board's average skill level will be much higher than the average of the community as a whole. What's easy for many of our members may not be so simple to typical players, who have just as much right to the game as the top five percent.

I really wish PD would take some notes from what the competition is doing, because Turn 10 has done a lot of stuff better. One of the many things they've done better is the option to set not only aids on or off but damage on or off (can't have mechanical damage in GT5 A-Spec) and set AI skill levels, so newbs can race against more dimwitted AI and more experienced players can face off with more skilled AI. As if that wasn't enough, Turn 10 also gives players added incentive for turning off aids or dialing up the AI difficulty by paying out bonus credits for ratcheting up the challenge.

Maybe by the time GT8 arrives here in about 2027 they'll finally have features Forza had twenty years earlier.

It's supposed to be fun. Stop thinking so hard, you'll hurt yourself.

Play online on GT5 then it becomes a racing simulator.

This is getting dangerously close to a GT5 versus Forza thread. We already have one, thank you.

GT5's low-key rollover physics is a shame... but in truth, on less-than-sticky tires, it's not easy to rollover in real life unless a.) your car digs into the surface with the outside wheels or b.) you hit something.

Given that GT5 doesn't allow:

1. Positive camber or sidewall deformation on the outside wheel
2. Truly soft spring rates to easily allow bottoming out (and there's some argument over the values given in tuning, also)
3. Deformable surfaces (dirt, gravel, etcetera) to catch the outside tire

You're never going to get what you expect.

Aside from that lack in the tire model, GT5 drives a whole lot like real life on the track. A place on which I've not rolled over, not even once, in real life, but in which I've rolled over a dozen times in GT5, already. Rollovers on non-racing tires are rare. Closest I've ever come to rolling over was in a van when the rear drums locked up on the main straight... :D ...and even though that was a six-foot tall vehicle with an ox-cart suspension and balloon tires, the tires slipped before we got even 30 degrees over.

Don't agree with you on that one. Once I discovered the problem with the AI that's exactly what I've done. Select cars and significantly tune-down the HP. Better to lower tires to match. The big problem with the AI is that they underperform on their tire choice. But if you lower your tire selection one or two steps, and lower your power just slightly, it becomes a much more engaging race.

Since there are NO plans in my near or distant future to buy an Xbox; that, is my fear, they won't get it til I'm long dead and gone!
