Its a game specifically aimed at car fans most of the people in the world find cars and car fans boring lol

Rollovers are the consequence of certain maneuvers, improper handling of certain cars or the result of wrong suspension settings or mechanical failures. If GT5 is a simulator, it has to simulate properly this aspect of vehicle dynamics too, it can't be dismissed as something that is mostly seen in arcade games.

It's not really just "rollovers" though, it's a combination of a faulty tire model, improper suspension and collision dynamics and other things related to car physics that just have to be improved.

Sims typically don't focus on the extremes, they sort of expect you to act responsibly. Not meaning to get off topic but, if you were a pilot or in pilot training, you are not expected to use flight sims to do barrel rolls in huey gunships, or stall a 747 @ 60,000 ft, etc. If you TRULY used Gt5 and other sims for what they are intended, you shouldn't need extreme crash physics, that's what makes it a sim and NOT AN ARCADE GAME

But isn't a sim supposed to be exactly that, a simulation of the real-thing? So shouldn't "real-physics" result in real-crashes/damage? If I'm in a flight sim I should definitely be able to do barrel rolls. If a "driving-sim" I should have real consequences for not driving properly.

GT5 is exactly what it's called: a driving simulator. If you take it online, it becomes a decent racing simulator, despite the dumbed-down online physics. Furthermore it's an excellent photography simulator. As a game though, especially the offline part, it fails miserably (boring events, braindead AI and broken game economy). The sheer amount of cars and the online bit are what keeps it interesting.

Ever see a crash in a thirty million dollar flight simulator? You end up with the airplane sticking out of the ground and some really poorly modelled smoke sprites coming out.

I spent a few months two years ago evaluating half-a-dozen marine simulators (finally bought a 180 degree panoramic set-up for about $300k) for our traininng institute. The ships don't break up in heavy seas and sinking elicits merely a black screen. Rain looks like it came out of a 1990's vector graphic game.

But the wave physics... incredible. And that's what you want from a marine simulator.

A simulator is meant to simulate reality, but what aspects of it are simulated are up to the programmers and the target audience. It's also limited by how much hardware you have. Which means you decided what stays and what goes.

Which is why I've never been bothered by realistic crashes, barrel rolls and the like. If I had to chose between photo-realistic graphics and crashes and detailed physics, tire deformation and marbles... I'd go for the latter. Unfortunately... GT5 doesn't have all of the latter, but the basic physics engine is more than enough for me.

@ Niky and Roush_fan, totally agree with your comments regarding simulation and rollovers. Well said.
People need to understand you can't just programme in the laws of physics and a car model and the computer figures the rest out to give you a simulator.
Computers don't even understand solid or soft, hot or cold. You have to define everything and so assumptions and simplifications are inevitable or you would never get all the code finished in a lifetime let alone fit it on a disc to ship to you and me!

Driving and photography simulator I agree with.

Racing simulator GT5 is certainly not -- for that you need race flags (ie yellow/caution etc), pace cars, drive through penalties, spotters (particularly for nascar), changing track conditions beyond just weather, tyre blow outs, engine failures if you overrev/overheat etc, set your starting level of fuel etc. none of which are available in GT5.

PD have marketed it exactly as they have delivered "GT5: The real driving simulator" and also provided the lobby's as a simple tool for us to race one another.
But they certainly have not provided a racing simulator, or a crash simulator, or a rollover simulator etc.

So just go and enjoy the driving for just that!

Much as I have been seen to defend GT5, that I can agree with... the racing really isn't the best out there. But with the latest updates, and the AI cars that move out of your way if you waggle a fender in their direction and don't run into you full-tilt when braking into a corner (except when you brake extremely early)... it's not too bad.

Who cares ? It's a brilliant game just play it and stop complaining and if you don't like the game sell it.

If we were talking about a game featuring only purpose-built racing cars or supercars you would probably have a point. However in GT5 you drive all sort of cars, including certain tall cars that in real life are quite easy to roll over or at the very least make visibly lift with relatively ease one or two wheels when suddenly steering at speed.

Anyway, I'm not talking of crash consequences after a roll over (or in other words, how the car collides against obstacles, although what we have in GT5 leaves much to be desired), but instead what it takes to initiate one.

I maintain that it's quite easy in real life with certain cars and stupid maneuvers:

I've never actually played a game when rollovers were depicted exactly as in real life.

I haven't actually rolled a car in GT5, despite having run hundreds of races and thousands of test laps. I know I could do it deliberately, I'm just waiting to see if it happens in the course of 'normal' driving*

@OP: As the replies suggest - the game is what you make it, it's very easy to pick a car that dusts the opposition, it's a lot more fun to pick an identical car/PP/tyreset and to have to work for the win.

*I know, my driving isn't considered normal...

You keep forgeting that GT5 is driving simulator and not crash simulator. Big difference there..

Here's the deal with crash damage...if you know a crash will result in enough damage to your car that it will be undrivable you ABSOLUTELY WILL drive differently than if all that will happen is you get the sound of two plastic garbage cans colliding and you can continue driving as if nothing happened. A driving sim absolutely has to have driving damage if you are going to drive realistically.

If your car is much faster than the competition, it'll be a driving game. If you select properly, it'll be a racing game. If you want to race but blow past everyone before turn one, choose a slower car. It's as easy or as difficult as you want to make it.

Thats kinda the problem for GT5 IMO, the AI is VERY slow and if you want a challenge you need to use a much slower car then the AI use. And when I find a car who is equal speed as AI then then its only 1vs1 because the lead AI car is much faster then rest of the field.

Ai should have bin fast as a real race driver, and if thats to fast then just upgrade your car.

What you want is realistic crash physics. The damage itself is not important. E.g. in Shift2 you can turn off the damage, but the crash physics remain, so you can't use the AI as guard rails. ;)

You guys always come up with some silly excuse that doesn't even make sense. And too suit your argument. Just face it GT5 is the biggest fail after all the hype and nice HD trailers we saw in the last few years.

FM4 will rip this too shredds and claim King of Racinggames. Until GT6 comes out in 2017 lollllllll:)

It is Kaz's evolving Car/Sims hybrid dream that we paid for and get to play once in a while. Some of it's very good, some of it's ...meh :boggled:

Or to fix the problem join one of the online sessions you (or other GTPers) host as I did and get clean racing so it doesn't matter about damage and great competition 👍.

The AI is definately to slow but in my opinion it's all about the online racing when it comes to looking for a true challenge, which is why I stopped bothering with A spec offline, and on the consoles I can think of no other game which allows such close racing bar perhaps Dirt 2, soon to be 3 when the store comes back, with GTPers but that only had half the grid size and was of course less realistic (which is not a criticism but caters to a different crowd often though I love both).

Gran Turismo series is the single greatest testimony of one man's devotion to virtualize foundations of technical and economical development of his great nation and share it with everyone willing to accept such portrayal

Real Driving Simulator is kinda of a cop out so that it doesn't techincally pertain exclusively to any market. So when it failes at racing... Hey... it's a driving simulator right?

It has race cars, rally cars, indy cars, nascars... but don't get it wrong, its a driving simulator. lol

First of all, there are no Indy cars in GT5, and it being a cop out to call it a driving simulator because the racing fails or isn't exclusively dedicated to a specific racing series is also questionable to me at least.
It's always been called a driving simulator, what dedicated racing games gives you acces to use roadcars for example?
GT5 indeed has plenty of race and rallycars (although the majority are roadcars) and racing, rallying, etc. are competitive forms of driving.
You can also however simply drive a car on a track without any competitive element, simply enjoying the ride or having fun in other ways without it being strictly about racing, unlike most dedicated racing games.

I'm sorry but I don't think GT5 is any of these things (it is a good game) and you shouldn't tell people what to do with a game they paid for, they have the right to critique as you have the right to praise.

I totally agree. The problem with the AI is that every AI driver drives the same. So the outcome of the race does not depend on the driver but rather on what car he is driving. Thats why in championship races you are always just racing one opponent which is the fastest car thus making the other cars more your obstacles rather then competition.
