Try working at an underground mine....16 hour days where you have to be up at 4am and don't get back to the mine camp till about 7pm....then you get you're shift changeover day where you get back from day shift, sleep then go into night shift that afternoon. Do that for 26 odd years like my father has (I've also been a miner (diamond drill offsider, not what you think...)) and you'll know what hard work and long shifts is all about.

Try working 48 hours straight at the hospital. :scared:

Thing is, I'm clearly not as tough as you are. :p

Yeah I'm not a fan of hospitals, when I did my ACL in my left knee I had about 3 operations along with countless visits beforehand to suck fluid out of the joint with a big needle :yuck:

I'd be more inclined to say my dads the tough nut here as he's been doing it the longest :dopey:.

That's nothing, when I were a lad, I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah.

And you try and tell the young people of today that ..... they won't believe you.

They won't because no young person believes days used to be 46.359 hours long, the government has been shortening them on us! It's a conspiracy I tells ya! :scared:

A few hours ago, we lost power for the seventh time this summer. That's got to be a record!

China on trying to conserve energy -

"How do we cut our power consumption Mr Bossman?"

"Errrmmm.....Rolling blackouts, every week, all summer. All those AC units can't be good for our charts. People will have to use hand fans."

China keep the record I'm afraid. Not that I'm pleased about having no AC in 43 degree heat. :(

^^ Paper round?

What Kind of Grinds my Gears?

Internet shopping, I like the price and ease at which you can purchase items, but I hate waiting a day or two for said item to be delivered :(

Receiving phonecalls/reminder texts from companies who have the wrong number (mine). :irked:

I get plenty of those. My house was built and owned for about a year by a big time drug dealer. Last I saw he was still on the FBI wanted list. Anyway, I get 5-7 calls a day from collection agencies for a man that has been in Mexico for 7 years now. Even after you tell them he doesn't live there, after 3 months their list must refresh or something cause the calls start again.
Damn you, now I'm irritated.

When my weekly earnings of £15 have to be cut short :grumpy:

Not to brag, but when I had a summer job, I was making that much in a day.

(Then again, I got my first part-time job helping my dad re-decorate a house last year. The biggest pain in the arse was the bloody wallpaper. I have an image of the bathroom I had to de-wallpaper burned into my mind.)

My parents have been receiving calls from people saying they are friends of Mr and Mrs Smith. We've had that for 4 years now...

No, £2 a day allowance, I can either use it to get lunch at school, or keep it and save up for something decent.

Not a bad pay for someone at 13 though, I must say.

With the food at my school, I'd save it up...

Get home from holiday off the plane on monday evening and have to go back to school the next day :(. Then get stomach pains for the past 2 days. GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

Our home phone number is an ex Co-Op number. I had this one indian guy call and it was fantastic.

Him: "Hello is this Co-Op?"

Me: "No sorry mate you've got the wrong number, this used to be a Co-Op number"

Him: "Oh sorry *puts phone down*"

5 minutes later

Him: "Hello is this Co-Op?"

Me (sounding a little irritated as he was disrupting whatever I was doing): "No, this is the wrong number!"

Him: "Are you sure this is not Co-Op?"

Me: "Yes please get a new phonebook"

Him: "Ok sorry, bye."

Another 5 minutes passes.

Him: "Hello is this Co-Op?"

Me (seriously pissed off): "For the third time, No!"

Him: "YES IT IS Co-Op YOUR WRONG"

Me: "It really isn't"

Him: "Yes it is, what is your name? I'm going to report you to your manager!"

Me: *Went from super serious to crying with laughter in 2 seconds*

Him: "Stop laughing I will have you fired!"

Me: "Mate, really. Update your phonebook and stop calling me"

Him: "Jerks! *Hangs up*"

Didn't phone back after that.

Prank calls

I've never received one, but I've had to deal with stupid customers who just aren't very bright.

That is a very good allowance! I never got anywhere near that as a kid.

Enjoy it, if you can save it your talking £60 a month, which is 2 new games a month 👍

I didn't get anything. My mum bought me a stack of blank CDs at the start of the school year and told me to make my own money. I started pirating C&C Red Alert and the Sims to sell to kids at my school to make money.

I ran a pyramid scheme at school....that is till the principal was infromed :grumpy:

Same thing happened to me. I sold a year 8 a copy of, I think it was, Premiership Manager 1998 and it had a virus on the disk. He grassed me up to the head of year who closed down my operation and gave me a large lecture about how I was breaking the law. What did I care? I was only 12 or something.

When I was at school I slept on rocks and had to steal the daily newspaper to make a blanket, walked to school through snow drifts and it was uphill both ways.

Kids these days...

It snowed in Melbourne back in those days? God damn man those must've been some cold Kangaroos!

I've run a couple of jobs serving the community at my school in recent years. Since my school has a strict policy against gum people get desperate, so I charge them a good chunk for a stick of gum. Works pretty good.

As for an on topic discussion, my legs hurt really bad and I don't know why! Two days straight of not being able to walk very well.

What grinds my gears?

Boogies. Why and how do they accumulate. I'm sure I could Wiki it but I can't be bothered tonight, I'll do it tomorrow.

They always seem to make themselves noticed when I'm in public and don't have a tissue with me which leads to me rubbing my nose to get rid of the irritation on the train like I'm some sort crazy man.

And related to that - Chinese people with no qualms about picking their hooters in public in plain view of the world and not even attempting to hide it and then handle some fruit or something with the same hand without washing it. :grumpy:
It's disgusting.

Thieves, more specifically metal thieves. They steal everything, grates, garden taps, boilers, sinks, lead from roofs, door handles, letter boxes, anything left in yards (bikes, rubbish, etc.), copper wire from telephone exchanges and electricity substations, overhead cables from railway lines and signalling cables, even shopping trolleys if someone has left them in the street, basically anything they can get their hands on, it has become beyond ridiculous now.:yuck:

What grinds my gears? (I've thought long and hard about this slight nuisance)

People who say "I searched but found nothing" and start a thread about something already discussed in another recent thread that 5 seconds of searching would find. If I was more serious this issue would likely make me consider how it would drive me up a wall.

I know what you mean and although it does not really bother me, it would be nice if they did actually use the search, even if it isn't that great. If I see a post like the ones you are on about, I'll often point out to the person that they should have searched and I'll include a link that I've found by searching to help them out aswell. Hopefully at least some of them will listen and then go on to be valuable members of the forum.:)

What a time to stumble on this thread for the first time!

How about other people making their problem my problem? Won't go into detail about it, but someone came to work with me on Saturdays and has created an awkward atmosphere there. She blames him, she is clearly in the wrong and is still making it worse. Muggings here is the one left trying to resolve it just so I can return to having fun with my work like I used to.

My biggest concern right now is my college project. I have to come up with a project soon, and only criteria is that it is work based and linked to my college course. I can't find anything at my Mon - Fri job (aircraft simulators) since I'm on a mechanical design team and studying electrical at college... So I thought of some amazing ideas for Saturday work (F1 simulators) which could tie into aircraft simulators instead. Easy Distinction I thought. Both of my companies agreed, and finally it was also approved by my project lecturer. Fantastic! Until head of technology hears about it, banning me from doing it since it is outside of work and my workplace wouldn't like it. You have got to be kidding me.... Even better, he is now trying to phone my manager (someone in HR who knows very little about the simulators) to suggest to them that I be put on probation and think about my job, since he isn't sure why they are sponsoring an incompetent student like me.

So a certain distinction grade has become a battle to achieve a Pass grade (and get my qualification) and to keep my job.
