I can't believe there are people walking around under the belief there won't be a Porsche pack for FM5. I'd be willing to bet the cars are already modeled at this time. Of course right now they'll say there won't be any Porsche. Of course that's what they said last time...............
No attack at anyone personally here...but the "I love it all I'll buy it all and everyone else should stop complaining" types are the very people who are giving game companies cover and confidence that they can continue to with the pay to play/pay even more to be competitive model that is taking over every game these days. Most of the time just holding back content that could/should have been in the game at release to accomplish it. And then most of the time, releasing the game with glitches they know are there, and maybe, if you're lucky and they can figure out a way it makes them more $$$ they might fix.
But make no mistake. There WILL be a Porsche pack for FM5 just the same as FM4. Belief of anything else is IMO naive.
I love this.
It's as if people forget Porsche was included in every single Forza up-till FM4.
I personally do believe T10 were forced into the DLC position, and they used it to test the waters, but not perhaps in the way you suggest.
I think it went down like this:
2003. Forza is pitched to MS as the only game in the sim-genre on xbox as their own exclusive version of the established and well selling Gran Turismo series with no competition from EA, or anyone else being exclusive to their platform.
T10 sweeten the pitch by suggesting MS foot the bill to secure Porsche so they have both Porsche and Ferrari in one game. MS go for this, seems like a no-brainer from every angle.
2004. EA let MS have Porsche for a extortionate price covering all of their costs and then some. But EA want Ferrari but not at that price, still they got paid for doing literally nothing.
2005. FM1 hits the shelves, success. Xbox gamers love it, game gets good reviews. MS is happy, EA is happy, everyone is happy.
2007. EA decide to put out a game (Pro Street) in the same sub genre as T10. T10 is now semi competition but, money still talks, and Ferrari is still too expensive. As the fees increase MS still willing to foot the ever increasing bill as popularity of forza is rising with FM2.
2008. EA has been planning. Shift is in development, a true competitor for forza, a selling point Porsche license. Raises an opportunity to scare MS and a reason to up the fees higher, now trying to use Ferrari as a bargaining tool.
2009. FM3 releases, Last contract still in place for porsche but is up for renewal soon. Shift releases but still no deal for Ferrari across all platforms, especially xbox (the biggest selling platform for their game)
2010/11. Shift 2 is near, so is FM4. MS won't move on their stance to have Forza being the only game on their platform with both Porsche & Ferrari. EA says fine 'price is raised even further for Porsche', MS says 'this is way too much, no deal'. Porsche is cut from Forza last minute, models fully built. MS is not happy,
2011 March. Sales projections for Shift2 are looking OK, EA reasonably happy.
2011 Sept. MS returns to the table with EA, No Ferrari, but we'll sell a FM4 DLC, you can take a cut from the profits. With sales for Shift2 tailing off earlier than expected, EA set price so essentially they make all the money, MS agrees but is using the sales to gauge whether Porsche is even worth the outlay.
2012.
MS; 'Well the DLC didn't do as well as it should T10, what do you suggest?'
T10; 'may as well let Ferrari go, maybe they'll be generous with the porsche fees'.
Except now EA don't have anything in the same sub-genre as T10 on the xbox and are happily milking the better selling (on the xbox) arcade genre, now the scales have tipped even further into their favour. Ferrari don't want any part in anymore exclusive deals, Porsche is happy or oblivious. And MS has no bargaining chips leaving Forza screwed for Porsche content, and their accountants feel it isn't worth the cash to acquire, 'Gran Turismo doesn't need it right Dan?'
