Watched Law Abiding Citizen last night. Very intense suspense thriller. I thought it was a really good movie. 👍

Watched a bit of "Undercover Brother" this morning. The only reason to watch that film is Denise Richards.

Denise Richards is a shockingly bad actress. No amount of T&A can make me sit through a film with her in it.

;)

Avatar - I've witnessed the legend. The movie renowned for its awesome special effects certainly impressed me. I had the fortune of seeing it in 3 glorious (almost spelt that word wrong - damn you Quentin Tarantino) dimensions at UCI cinema in Blanchardstown. The story is a futuristic twist on as story that has been re-hashed and replayed over and over, but never in space. It is based on the old story of the white man taking the land of the natives. And all for something worth $20,000,000/kg. Okay, they have a point. The protagonist is paraplegic Jake Sully, who is chosen for a program where humans are transported into the bodies of the native Na'vi people. After a trip gone wrong, he is cut off from the base. He discovers a group of people with a great culture, and who respect their world. All I have to say is that I'm not disclosing any further information. See the movie for yourself, and I recommend seeing it in 3D. One word of warning - if you take off your 3D glasses while watching, it will seem like there's three of everything, and it will seem like you're drunk. I give it the full 10-out-of-10.

Watched " Gamer " last night
THought it was a really decent movie with some really good concepts. It turned out a lot better than I thought it was going to be. 8/10

Tomorrow night " Law Abiding Citizen " can't wait!
Guess I'm on a Gerard Butler kick or something.......

OK OK, but First Blood is old... If that was made with todays technology, it wouldve been better :p Anyway, do they have TVs in movie prison so I can atleast stay up to date or will they be playing First Blood over and over and over again? :D
Bah, you crazy kids! Seriously though, "good" old movies are still good movies. :D

I'm not expecting an classic here, or even a "Taken". But I have been looking forward to it. I got that Whiteout Blu-ray from Netflix right now, but Law Abiding Citizen's next up. 👍

Law Abiding Citizen was actually one of the best movies I have seen in a very, very long time:tup: I'm planning on buying it on dvd, I don't buy many movies but this one deserves a buy.

I saw UP a few months ago, but I just watched it with my parents and they loved it (as did I). It actually had my dad crying. Haha.

Eventually I have to watch the bonus features on the DVD.

UP, as in UP the CGI cartoon? I was confused when you said it had your pops crying, guess there is another movie called up?

No, I'm pretty sure it's the animated one. D-N said it pulled at his heartstrings a bit, too:
OK, besides having one of the most understated film titles of all time, and trailers that reveal very little about the real meaning and heart of the film... it is also the ONLY Pixar film that has caused me to shed a tear.

Just finished watching this on your recommendation. Honestly, I couldn't really see what made you think it was so good.

Your the first person I have heard that hasn't liked it:confused: What exactly was so horrid about it? It had everything to make it a great film to me, good story, good acting, plot twist that weren't super obvious like most films these days. Oh course not everything I like you will like, as so not everything you like I will. My three favorite movies are (in no order cause thats impossible) Short Circuit, Dark City, Donny Darko. As you see they really have nothing in common with one another, my tastes are fairly broad, but I tend to like sci-fi type films like Matrix and such more than most. Donny Darko was a great film also, its a film that pains me to watch with my wife because even though she has seen it several times she still doesn't understand the story fully. She says its just too deep for her brain to grasp, its a very layered and deep story, but great, you just have to pay attention to the movie because its one of those you don't want to miss a scene and be lost.

You're questioning why he doesn't like a movie you like when one of your favorites is Short Circuit?

I asked why he didn't like it, I was just saying we won't like the same movies and listed a few that I do like, my tastes are wide. Sorry movie jesus.

Sorry movie jesus.
Now, that's a name I've not heard in a long time. A long time.

My apologies, breakpoint. It came across, at least to me, like you were questioning how he couldn't like it instead of what he didn't like about it. :)

No, no, oh no. I didn't mean it like that at all, I was just showing that I know we have different taste like everyone does. Short Circuit isn't a favorite because it has a great story or anything like that, it just has a sentimental value for me because of the way that the movie came into my hands as a kid. I am just wondering what exactly turned him off about it because it seemed pretty solid to me.

Hidden Fortress (1958)

A Japanesefilm about 2 friends keep getting into trouble after they kept fighting with each other and get themselves in funny situations.

I enjoyed the film and even the thought the movie was in Black and White, it was really fun to watch. Despite its age, it can compete with nowadays and the dialogues are very well written. Do expect some random yelling now and then lol.

8/10

They say George Lucas modeled C3PO, R2D2 & Han Solo after characters from Hidden Fortress. Borrowed more from other Kurosawa films as well.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate it and I didn't think it was horrid. I just didn't think it was all that great. The story seemed completely implausible. The 'twist' came from absolutely nowhere. The movie had some very good actors but they all just seemed to be going through the motions. And the napalm effects almost made me laugh.

It kept me entertained for an hour and a half but I will forget it just as soon.

I saw it tonight(gave in, rented on redbox), and I tend to agree. Plot, emotion I thought were sort of shallow. Acting, about average, maybe better.

It was good though. I rarely got bored by it, and bottom line, that's entertainment. My biggest beef with this film would be the twist. Story kept on going one way, then completely the other way at the end, and very unconvincingly. I didn't buy the ending. Overall, I'd give it "B-", but I'm being generous.

You are correct, he did find some insperation with these movies. :)

The Bank Job (Roger Donaldson, 2008) -- I'm sure many of you have seen it, but it's about a bank robbery (duh!) which targets targets a roomful of safe deposit boxes. The boxes also contain a treasure trove of dirty secrets - secrets that will thrust the robbers into a deadly web of corruption and illicit scandal. The movie is set in the 70s, and IMO it could've done with a bit ore of music to give it that 70s feel, since, save for the clothes, it wasn't well ambiented. The cars are awesome, but pretty timeless. Sex and violence was good without going overboard, yet the whole movie worked. The ending was abit meh-ish since almost the whole epilogue was in text at the end. In short, a good British movie to spend a sunday afternoon, with a bit more content than your average Sunday movie. 7.5/10

Movies in general have been rather boring and just not as well done as movies in the past years. I really liked the part where he had the guy that killed his wife and kids though, that would be my response if I were in his shoes, I also have 3 kids so some parts are easier for me to get than people without kids. It was one of those movies to where my wife and I both could watch together and neither one of us complain so its a buy in my house cause thats rare:lol:

(gave in, rented on redbox).

I recently started using redbox, about a week ago. What I really like about it is the fact that I haven't had to pay for a single rental since using it! Just google redbox promo codes, I haven't payed a dime all week. And before someone says something like Oh thats pirating etc. you should know that redbox puts those codes out and they also have at the bottom of the email when you get it, Share this with your friends! So, they promote sharing the codes because it gets them more customers, and because most people won't return the movie before 9 pm the next night and they will be charged the dollar when its late so they still win most of the time, so as long as you return it before 9 pm the following night you got it for free.

Quatermass and the Pit (Roy Ward Baker, 1967) -- An ancient Martian spaceship is unearthed in London, and proves to have powerful psychic effects on the people around; and though it seems to be just another crappy 1960s sci-fi flick, it turned out much better than I anticipated. The story is as plausible as any sci-fi from the old days (with oscilliscopes taking the place of electronic equipment), but it's very well paced and the sort of 'intelligent' movie that never really took off in the 60s and 70s, since they would tend to insult other people's intelligence. This one steers clear. If you're a fan of Stephen King, you may watch this and realise The Tommyknockers is basically a remake of it. 7/10

Training Day (2001)

Watched it again this morning, never gets old. One damn good movie, deals with undercover cops, crooked cops and the entire scene of the underground. Don't really want to go into detail of any of the story because it would take away from it if you watch it. Its basically about a new cop getting trained to go underground and the "training day" not going exactly like he probably expected. Great, great acting in the movie from everyone but especially from Denzel Washington, didn't hurt my opinion that he drives a 79 Monte in the film that looks almost identical to my last one:sly: Everything but the switches that is, too much weight.

whateverworks.jpg

Whatever Works (Woody Allen, 2009) -- Porbably one of the best and most original Woody Allen movies I've seen, it's about Boris Yellnikoff (played by Larry David) ranting his views and ideologies on religion, relationships, and the randomness (and worthlessness) of existence. He meets a few people along the way and manages to annoy them as much as anyone who *knows* he's superior to them might, but the movie's message in the end is great:
whatever love you can get and give, whatever happiness you can filch or provide, every temporary measure of grace, whatever works. And don't kid yourself. Because its by no means up to your own human ingenuity. A bigger part of your existence is luck, than you'd like to admit. Christ, you know the odds of your fathers one sperm from the billions, finding the single egg that made you. Don't think about it, you'll have a panic attack.

And though pessimistic in essence, that's really what life is about. It's not about idealistic values and ways to live life, but about being able to find the happiness and love in whatever it is you have at hand at the moment... whatever works. 10/10

Wow, interesting review there - not that I have seen the film, but to see anyone give a Woody Allen film 10/10 is quite unusual. Annie Hall remains my favourite, but I haven't seen many/most of Allen's more recent movies. That said, I did just watch one of my other favourites recently:

Broadway Danny Rose (Woody Allen, 1984)

Woody Allen shows here that you can turn a single anecdote into an entire film - but he manages this feat by drawing you into an absorbing story about some genuinely interesting characters and plenty of his characteristically brilliant wit and dialogue. As well as being a ridiculous and fun story, the film works on a completely different level as a story about loyalty and the value of friendship. Broadway Danny Rose is a far cry from the slapstick humour of Allen's earliest films, and is nowhere near as self-consciously serious as some of his others - it's more like a composite of all the best features of Woody Allen rolled into one film without going overboard on any one aspect. 9/10

They say George Lucas modeled C3PO, R2D2 & Han Solo after characters from Hidden Fortress. Borrowed more from other Kurosawa films as well.

Not only that, if you pay attention to the camera pans and wipes, George Lucas 'borrowed heavily' from Kurosawa.

Yeah, I forgot about that. The most interesting one that I remember is where name "Jedi" came from. Supposedly from Jidai-geki. Period plays, almost automatically a samurai flick. :D

The thing about Whatever Works is that it has what is (to me) the perfect mix of probably 2 of the best scripting minds of the late 20th century: Woody Allen and Larry David. Thta mix is basically what makes Whatever Works er... work so good to me. Plus, it stars Larry David as the flippin' guy who gives a rat's ass about the world.
