...and some adults do too.

We have different electrical outlets, too. You must convert when in our country!

California is actually quite nice. There's oceans, lakes, mountains, valleys, no humidity, no snow, no hurricanes...but nobody can afford to own a house there, unless they've been there before home prices skyrocketed in the 1980s, or make good money. A good way to keep the American South-Eastern Riff-Raff from living there.

And Take it offensively if you aren't

I think this is also a uniquely American feeling; telling you how you should feel about someone else's opinion. It virtually cancels out any meaning to thier opinions; as if they believe I can't think for myself.

People do things that they like, not because they're worried that anybody else has an aversion or opposite feeling towrds something, but because it brings about pleasure or usefulness.

Warning someone to take it "personal" or "be offended" is as useless as a merkin.

I have found that a lot of America's youth have a need to fill every bit of their lives with drama, as if they're trying to live out the show The OC...

👍 You win the prize.

That is why Junior High sucks so bad over here. It's like the cast of "The Days Of Our Lives"

You could fit the whole UK into one American State, do you really need that much room?

Yes, I need my 2 acre yard (in the city)!

@Pupik, homes are expensive here too. They are not as expensive as San Francisco, but they are expensive. I think that the cost of living is just higher in the city.

Really? We must be well paid. Sweet.

CA is awsome, but I still prefer NYC

America has lots of conservatives that complain that about the amount of liberals, and lots of liberals that complain about the amount of conservatives. And your either left or right, but people that claim their in the middle mostly go sooo far right that its crazy. AH.... its confusing.

Just wait until high school. It gets worse, trust me. It gets better in college, but there is still drama.

South Florida homes are overpriced and they're a bit higher in New York; California's home prices are about double that of FL, which would put it on par with insanity.

Yeah, 5 homes were sold here last year at an average price of 2 million dollars. The homes average size was between 2,500 and 4,500 sq. feet. There is a home down the street that cost 4.2 million to furnish.

^^ See what I mean? Americans hate America. This thread is filled with Americans b*tching about America. It's really quite odd. You'd expect that such a powerful country with a long noble history of success would be patriotic. Not in the slightest. Americans are the first ones to tell you that other people do it better. American media is filled with stories about every other culture and their superiority to American culture.

Americans buy crap because it was made by Native Americans (whose culture is necessarily superior). Americans will tell you that Canada's health care system is superior (despite never having seen it in action, and ignoring the Canadians that cross the boarder for health care). Americans will tell you that other nations are superior for having signed the Kyoto treaty (despite the fact that they aren't complying with the treaty and have no understanding of the science involved). Americans will tell you that Americans are fat and lazy and blame it on our culture - then they'll tell you it's a disease that's nobody's fault. Americans will visit Africa because they feel guilty that they don't live in huts and die of malaria.

Americans believe in the power of government and regulation. They believe, despite the fact that it goes against everything the country stands for, that central planning is the key to society. They'll tell you our public schools are a mess and a failure and will simultaneously tell you that the government is the best organization to run schools. They'll tell you that redistribution of wealth programs like welfare and social security are a dismal failure and will simultaneously tell you that the government is the best organization to run charity. They'll tell you that the rich are greedy and just get richer the same day one of the richest men in the world donates 30 billion dollars to charity.

Americans hate America.

My smallish 3 bedroom house is worth roughly $700USD, is that what you call average or cheap.

Yes. I have room for three flower beds, a vegetable garden and can play sports like baseball or football.

See, it is absolutely necessary, besides, how else am I supposed to make up for my gas guzzling 80 miles/day drive if I can't have lots of green space?

I am not bitching about America, I was just saying that the cost of living is a bit higher. I wouldn't trade where I live in for another place. We got our house for a cheap price, before real estate prices went through the room. I would like to live a bit close to the city (I live in a far out suburb), but I wouldn't go anywhere else.

We have some of the best education systems in the US in Wisconsin. I don't buy stuff from the native american's (In fact, I find them boring!). If we had socialized medicine/health care, our health care probably would not be where it is today, but behind a little.

Yes, Americans hate America. That's why it keeps getting better*, because Americans point out what needs to be fixed. If everyone was content, there would be no need for progress.

*Although some will argue that we are a nation in decline.

You're a bit off base there -- I'm not bitching about America, I'm remarking funny that the price is higher (doubled and tripled in some cases) for the same product, only that it's in a different location.

I'm not calling for regulation. I'm not burning the flag. I'm not calling for the President's head. I'm not even calling you a complainer. But your complaint is totally unfounded based on my posts about home prices. It's a market economy...don't like it, find another market, obviously. It's far cheaper in Iowa or Kansas than here, that's for sure.

I like it here (meaning S. Florida); it's not perfect, but what is? Nice weather, nice beaches, not too far to experience a different culture, parks and nature is everywhere. With the exception of home prices, goods and services aren't all that badly priced (well, maybe a drink in a nightclub is outrageous).

Americans buy crap because it was made by Native Americans (whose culture is necessarily superior). Huh? None of this applies to me, since I have no grounding in these situations. My health care's fine, don't care about the fine points of the Kyoto, and I avoid the casinos the Native Americans have set up around here. I'm 10-20 pounds overweight, but I don't blame anyone but myself. Since I'm in no pain, not worried, and don't care what others think about my figure, and doctors aren't urging me to make many changes, this is another non-issue. I haven't visited Africa; no guilt there.

Americans believe in the power of government and regulation. They believe, despite the fact that it goes against everything the country stands for, that central planning is the key to society. They'll tell you our public schools are a mess and a failure and will simultaneously tell you that the government is the best organization to run schools. No argument there; when polled, Americans generally very paradoxical about these sorts of issues. But I agree, I'm disgusted with people who voices contradiction feelings, and want the rest of the world to fix all their problems, only to complain about the results or means of achieving those things.

As for the nation's educational system, you get what you put into it.

If I have enough for one Big Mac meal each month with Social Security when I'm 65, then I'll get what I imagined I'd get when I was 12 and figured out the mystery of inflation.

The rich aren't greedy, they're just rich. I dislike how there's a "death tax" that re-taxes income. Why should there be a penalty for getting a pay raise for your efforts?

If the government wants to be a charity, I will not buy anything from their bake sale; the pies will have an aftertaste from the permitted 0.5% of tobacco, and the cakes might have an aftertaste of 1% acceptable used banana peels. Not to mention, the FDA will delay production of said baked goods for 5 years.

(... and ignoring the Canadians that cross the boarder for health care).

I have lived in a large Canadian city that is 35 minutes from the American border for my entire life and never have I heard of anybody who does this.

Make a thread about living in Canada and I won't complain about a single thing.

Is that sarcastic? If not, you're proving my point. If so, you're still not getting it. Americans fundamentally hate the things America stands for. I'm not just talking about casual complaining about little irritations. I'm talking about a deep seeded, fundamentally ingrained hatred for the things America stands for. Things like Capitalism, separation of powers, separation of church and state, freedom of speech, freedom to own guns, personal responsibility.

Granted not ALL Americans hate all things America stands for. But many Americans hate a huge portion of the principles of their nation.

Close, but I don't feel it's quite right. I don't think they hate the principles until that principle makes them feel uncomfortable.

For example:
Freedom of speech is great as long as you don't say anything to insult/offend me, then I want you fired from your job and possibly locked away for hate crimes.
or
I love to practice my religion and enjoy the freedom to do so, but if you expect me to have to over hear or even witness that other person say their prayers I am overly offended they should be allowed to do so.
or
I love being able to go to my job everyday and earn my money and then the ability to spend it the way I want, but when there is an across the board tax cut I don't see why the company owner got more dollars cut than I did. He has more money, he should be able to pay a higher percentage.

See, they love America until they wind up on the recieving end of whatever the downside to those ideals can be.

But that's taking away their freedom to say whatever they like. That's restricting that freedom of expression, but on top of it, you decide to take away their entire freedom when they offend? This same ideology is applied every day in other countries, where if you're caught snooping around somewhere where somebody doesn't want you snooping, you get killed.

Hundreds of journalists a year are exiled, jailed, tortured or killed for publishing things that should be perfectly legal to publish. This is restricting their freedom of speech, and so is what you are saying. If it bothers you, you want to jail them?

No, I'm being serious. Although there are some governmental issues that sometimes bother me, especially lately, I love living here and I will be very unhappy if I were ever forced to move elsewhere.

Ok, that proves my point. What other nation on earth is full of such unpatriotic self-loathing citizens?

Separation of Church and State is something people often say, but the constitution actually does not separate church and state, but it does say that religion is not to be taught or forced on kids in a public school.

I go to church every week, and do have my beliefs. I, like other religions, don't believe you should believe other things, but hey, people can believe what they want, fine with me, as long as I can go on believing what I believe in.

Freedom of speech, I am fine with it. I don't care if some person walks by and curses, as long as it is not directed at me.

California is pretty awesome, until you get a flat tire on your way to a friend’s birthday party.

What happens then? I know a few kids at school that got flat tires at night (after 10 PM) and the cop will come, give them a ticket for being out after curfew, and never helped them with their tire at all.

Haha.

It happened fairly late at night so there wasn't too much traffic around. I managed to pull into a parking lot, threw on the spare, and went on with it. I was pretty bummed out though; getting a flat tire really ruins your night.
