What's so great about drifting?

From the looks of it to me it looks like unrealistic, very arcadey, why is everyone into drifting so much, shouldn't a simulation racer be about taking the line?

1. Its great fun
2. It looks great
3. Its not about being the fastest
4. How can it be unrealistic/arcadey if people do it in real life the same way?

It looks cool and is fun??

And beating your mates while they take the lines and you drift around them in replay mode is hilarious.

I've wondered about this myself. It does look very cool, and it must be very rewarding knowing that you just put a 400bhp car into a controlled drift at 80mph. I've never even once tried Drifting on GT3, but will get round to it one day. It's a nice addition to the game I always thought.

Cheers

That's a very relevant point there Cosmic. My penguin agrees.

This question may very well be in a GT4 context, but either way, the pro and anti drift debate is one that will go on as long as cars exist. Go read some of the giant threads already dedicated to it for a clearer picture - search for 'drift' and sift through the millions of responses.

You know, this has been mentioned a lot. People think that drifting is only for "ricers." If you're fairly new to the automotive or racing cultures, "rice" refers to cars with very tacky bodykits, obnoxious-sounding mufflers, and things like that. More commonly, "Need for Speed: Underground" (I haven't yet played it as of the date of this reply) comes to mind.

Okay, the uninitiated has been covered. Now let's get back to the topic at hand.

These were threads I've created about drifting. Included were the commentary of the many GTP members. Take a look at these drifting topics I and a few others have made:

I've done this search based on drifting. There are many others, but for the most part, they should whet your palete about drifting. So, take a look at them. I did the searching for you, so go for it. In future posts, I'll provide my explanation as to what is great about drifting and maybe convince people that drifting WILL be fun for all GT racers. Until then, you got reading to do :). Take care, alright?

Something you have with Curry's?!

Drifting is both good and bad...

I think it depends on the corner... and mastering both techniques and using them in the right places can make the best speeds.
