I like some of the modern pop, but only certain songs. For example... I hate Ke-money-ha's "Tik Tok" and Perry's "California Gurls" but don't mind "Firework" or "Last Friday Night" (the storyline of the latter is quite funny!)

Some of today's pop is derivative and execrable... but that's true of any era of pop.

You want aural torture? New Wave in the 80's had everyone singing in the exact same tone of voice and using synth drums in everything... there's only so often you can listen to mind-numbingly monotone lyrics laid over the exact same low-fidelity cymbal crash before jumping off a roof screaming.

(and that's from someone who actually likes some New Wave)

Lady Gaga isn't my kind of thing, but I can dig it... her composition work is terrific, and she has a lot of creative energy. Gaga's melodic sense makes for lots of interesting interpretations of her work by other artists.

The music scene today isn't that great, but it's preferable to the boy-band nineties...

The thing that bothers me is the amount of attention and appreciation that something with absolutely no artistic merit gets. Is it really too much to ask for some people to write their own songs, and actually sing in tune?

Hate is a strong word. Strongly dislike is more apt. The thought that there are hugely talented people making barely enough money , sometimes not even that, just because they aren't super mainstream, while people that has got mediocre if any talent at all makes millions makes me sad.

Of course there are talent in the mainstream as well.

It's more about the artist as a person than a musician which is especially evident in Lady Gaga. It bothers me how many critics call her music revolutionary, basically because she dresses weird. Now I'm not saying she is talentless but she gets attention for her style rather than music(style).

Pop music is more about image than actual music. And that's why I don't like it.

I have the age to confirm that. We complained a lot about Michael Jackson (still do but a bit less).

To be honest i prefer listening to the Rolling Stones,Beatles,Led Zeppelin,Lynyrd Skynyrd,ZZ Top,Bon Scott AC/DC and stuff like that.Bands like these will always be better to listen to than that Modern Stuff.

Although I listed to those, I can not agree: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys, Panic! at the Disco, Snow Patrol, Radiohead .....

that is called modern stuff and I'm generally (again not always) very interested when they bring out new things.

Well I liked the bands he listed, I listen to them everyday. I listened to THOSE bands, sorry but the closest thing that I like to modern is U2 and Nirvana. I don't really like anything out today, less talent and song meaning. They could be talented, but autotune isn't really showing.

I don't really care. Don't make a conscious effort to listen to it (besides Gaga sometimes), but if it comes on the radio I don't turn it off. It's ok music for driving IMO (Ke$ha, Gaga, etc etc) because it's really pretty idiot proof. If I'm listening to a deep song while I'm driving, I start to think more about the song than my driving and get caught up in the meaning of the lyrics. With Ke$ha, there's no way you can get too caught up thinking about lyrics that include a water bottle full of whiskey in a handbag. Pop music today needs to be good for dancing, and that makes it upbeat enough to keep me going while I'm driving, but there's no substance behind the lyrics, so I don't lose focus on my driving.

All that being said, I have a playlist on my iPod for driving, and unless I forget my iPod at home, or the GPS needs to be charged, I listen to my own music.


EDIT: If there's one thing I dislike about Modern Pop, it's the singers announcing their names in the beginning of the songs, Jason Derulo and Pitbull ("Mr. Worldwide") for example.

I usually have to be 'in touch' with many current trends due to my job. This also means I listen to lots of silly pop music. Though I don't rally like today’s popular music I don’t mind listening to it…sort of. I consider it a necessary evil in terms of staying current, which I feel is absolutely necessary for any creative person, especially one who makes a living in Adland such as myself.

Most pop music today is terrible, but it's mainly R&B pop with autotune, a rapper talking about how many girls and cars he has, and a guest vocalist singing the chorus hook. The rapper has usually been famous less than a year + is generally very average, and seemingly has no idea they have absolutely no money at all compared to the genius label fat cats making millions from them. I mean jeez, tinie tempah, we get it you were poor, now you arent. I seriously do not see that guy's appeal.

However, some is good, stuff like Robyn, Jessie J and especially Katy Perry is quite good to listen to now and again. Oh, and I can't remember a pop song in the last 20 years that didnt have a bass drum kick ridiculously high in the mix.

Well old Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers music is good,some of the newer stuff,not so much.When they went mainstream the music kind of lost a little bit of it's oomph.(i think i spelled that last word right)

Considering the last time I played an instrument was 6 years ago.. I couldn't, but that doesn't mean its hard to play. You are assuming there are no skilled musicians on this forum of over 100,000 people. Your assumption is completely wrong and is backed up by nothing but a ****** metalcore song.

Once again, my friend who just started playing the drums can sit down and play blast beats for hours straight. They sound like **** and are fun as hell to play. Nothing new/amazing.

As for fast guitar playing, it really isn't amazing, trying making it sound good now. It sounds like ass covered with poo. And this is coming from someone who loves all forms of metal.

I can't vouch for any talent that she may or may not have but this lunatic is one big reason why i hate every fibre of modern so-called music. She's a cash cow, a clothes prop, an ever changing image designed to appeal to gullable teeny boppers with sprayed on jeans and Russell Brand hair-do's. Modern music makes me angry, i have to turn the radio off when it comes on. Worst part is, i'm not really that old, i'm 36 but i just can't tolerate anything that main stream radio stations play. I only ever listen to Planet Rock and if i can't tune in to that then i'd rather work my day in silence!
