I can't stand it, I was helping my dad on his truck, which was at my uncle's work after it was repainted. And we have to put the body back together (some of them were aftermarket parts because before we got the truck someone crashed it). My uncle had the radio on, and it was on a pop station. It played the same song at least 3 times I think, they might not have been the same, but they sounded like it. My dad and I would every once and awhile look at each other and notice the horrified expression at the horrible generic beat and autotune. It was probably the worst experience of my life.

modern pop is all the same, they all use autotune, and they all use the same beats, they don't write the music most of the time, and only get somewhere because they write some things about a party or love or the same generic noise.

I'M AN IRON MAIDEN FAN, AND I'M PROUD OF IT.

No autotuning in my playlists :sly:

In the end it's all metal so there is really no need to put them into a category.:)
Yes there is.

Amen to that! Can't beat some classic rock. Throw in some Megadeth, Metallica, Pearl Jam and Faith No More and i'm in heaven!

I can't vouch for any talent that she may or may not have but this lunatic is one big reason why i hate every fibre of modern so-called music. She's a cash cow, a clothes prop, an ever changing image designed to appeal to gullable teeny boppers with sprayed on jeans and Russell Brand hair-do's. Modern music makes me angry, i have to turn the radio off when it comes on. Worst part is, i'm not really that old, i'm 36 but i just can't tolerate anything that main stream radio stations play. I only ever listen to Planet Rock and if i can't tune in to that then i'd rather work my day in silence!

You don't like Gaga because shes a cash cow, but you like Megadeth and Metallica who are some of the most prime examples of money before music. Hell you can say the same thing about any music genre as they all have a freakin' style. I'm not much into pop, but I have been known to randomly sing Katy Perry because shes freakin' awesome and Lady Gaga does have an incredible voice and is quite a good musician. The fact that they are pissing people off doing what they love, while making tons of money makes me like em' more.

I don't understand, if you guys hate the radio so freakin' much, why bother listening to it. Put a CD in, plug in your iPod.

I personally LO VE modern music.

I was going to do the rest of my post like that but realized it would be a bit overkill.

The only ones i really care for out of that bunch is...

Witchcraft - Reminds me of the Doors and Led Zeppelin put together.

Strapping Young Lad - Reminds me of Lamb of God.

The first quote i won't get into because it's just silly.

Witchcraft - Reminds me of the Doors and Led Zeppelin put together.

More like Black Sabbath. Tribute riff at the end is a dead giveaway.

And it isn't silly to have subgenres.

Now that you mention it is more like Sabbath, had to listen to the end again.

Sellouts... *cough* *cough* ...sellouts...

Personally... whether an artist is successful in terms of marketing or merchandising doesn't affect my opinion of them at all. If it sounds good, has a nice hook and is listenable, I'm not bothered if the person or band sells a million T-shirts, designs earphones or appears in their own video-game or B-Movie (KISS did both). All that really matters is the music.

Oh God no. Usually when I hear that song that goes "It's all 'bout da money, money, money," I replace the words "money" with "Saxo". And not in the old-lady-down-the-street's Saxo, I mean one with tinfoil spinners, an underlighting system stolen from Homebase/B&Q/IKEA/Home Depot and an empty tin of Heinz baked beans for an exhaust.

Dude she sings 'It's not about the money' singing against consumerism and stuff. She is another one of those test-tube pop stars in a way, the label make her something she isnt so she makes them a lot of cash, meanwhile she's none the wiser and thinks it's because of her 'unique' talent. Most do.

I used to complain about how mtv an vh1 dont play music videos anymore... but i just witnessed Lady Gaga on the edge video. Im not complaining anymore.

I really have nothing else to say after that except that i feel as if everything that mainstream 80's and 90's music has built up, has been crushed by clumsy crack heads and schizo divas.

Im just pretending this stage in music history isnt happening and imagining that all the underground musicians is whats pumping the economy.

Its all about the money money money...

👍

I have never really liked pop songs at all. Apart from the occasional pop song every few months that I may like I generally despise pop. It's far too realiant on thing like auto-tune.

The jist of her every song is 'I like to go out and have sex with a different dude every night whilst drunk'

This kind of messages that these songs get out to people and even kids are absolutely ridiculous. I can tell you for a fact that I have heard 7-8 year olds listening and singing along with these songs. If they're hearing 'Party until 5am' on the radio, who knows how it might effect them later in life?

Wow. If the worst experience of your life was being forced to listen to pop, you have had a pretty easy life.

 Not easy, just very very boring :p

PS: Note to others: New Zealanders over exaggerate things massively.

Gonna get this thread alive again:sly::sly:

Because today was absolutely the worst day for my music taste. In class, our instructor had a very nice song on her radio, very harmonic, and very smooth. I've heard a very prissy/preppy girl say to her friends that this music sucked and that all other music but Pop sucked. She then took out her phone and listened to HER music, which was on loud. I could hear it, it was just random beats with a woman talking/trying to make rhymes. I swear, I heard her say that everything but Pop was utter cr*p and that our instructor should "keep up with the times." Honestly this generation makes me sick.

I'd want to see how many people would agree on this.

That girl is a close minded jerk, and you and your instructor probably have quite good taste. But that doesn't stop me from liking pop music. I mean, if you don't like pop solely because of people like that, then that would make you just as close minded. However, you seem reasonable so I doubt that's true.

Actually my reasons of hating Pop might amuse you:
- Autotune
- Lip-synching
- Unoriginal (I mean for a music video they are so uninspired.)
- Can't write their own songs.
- Turns innocent kids into drunk, wasted teens.
- Has "go have s3x" plastered all over the lyrics, generic love/money/party theme.
- Fanbase (already went through that :))
- Lack of musical instruments. You'll know when you see them live, just a dancing group behind them and a microphone, an occasional FAKE bass/guitar/drum. Usually only instrument is piano.
- Trying to imitate an R&B along with Hip-Hop/Rap. You'll see how they try to fuse it in together. Pop & Rap... yeah it doesn't mix. :yuck:
- Saying they are influenced by classic musicians (Lady Gaga is fine, she was influenced by Queen because of their song "Radio GaGa) but are not really. (Ex: Katy Perry, she says she liked Paul McCartney... asked about her favorite Macca song, and she said,"Umm... give me a name guys."

.... and a whole lot more. The 21st century is the century of moving forward, technology, intellect, knowledge, science, discoveries... but if you ask me, music should go back to the 60s. Maybe the attitudes of people nowadays should go back to a time when people knew what "RESPECT" meant.

Hmm, that list isn't true of all Pop music. The pop musician I respect most is Lady Gaga, because she can definitely sing, and I'm very confident that she writes her own songs, which to me have been hit or miss in terms of meaning. Sometimes it really makes you think, other times it's much more meaningless, but she still has the ability. And yes, the music is often not real instruments, but she plays the piano well enough. Basically, she understands music and creates it with her own talents, whether or not she covers up a lot of it with audio effects and fluff. She's just trying to make the songs what she wants them to be, not accepting them for what they are. Whether that's the right decision, I don't know, but it's not my concern if the music still sounds good.

It's Ke$ha I hate. She doesn't even sing in her songs, just speaks into an autotune machine, and every song is about partying and getting drunk. Totally pointless and meaningless.

BTW a person having a fanbase is not a very good reason not to like the person. If the fanbase is annoying enough, you can certainly hate the fanbase though.

.

Really seems you are doing THE EXACT SAME THING!!!!!

You know what makes me sick?

The fact that this generation can't fathom the fact that people may have different views towards certain things than theirs. I honestly cannot stand most pop and country, but I frankly have no problem with people liking it and thing it's the best ever. It's music, it's sole purpose is to make people happy, just because it doesn't make you happy doesn't mean it doesn't make someone else happy.

- Lip-synching

Nothing new, even The Beatles have admitted to lip synching.

- Unoriginal (I mean for a music video they are so uninspired.)

Guessing you haven't watched much from the 80's?

Every other video is basically live performance footage+Fan's jumping and some rehersal shots from an empty stadium with the studio track dubbed over it.

- Can't write their own songs.

Elvis couldn't either, nor could Frank Sinatra. Hell, Ella Fitzgerald made a whole career off other people's songs.

- Turns innocent kids into drunk, wasted teens.

So you've never heard of the 70's?

- Has "go have s3x" plastered all over the lyrics, generic love/money/party theme.

Again, nothing new, Elvis, The Beatles, Jim Morrison and more were all sex symbols.

- Fanbase (already went through that :))

Name one thing that doesn't have a super annoying fanbase?

One trip into the GT5 section and you will see what I mean, doesn't make GT5 a bad game though.

- Lack of musical instruments. You'll know when you see them live, just a dancing group behind them and a microphone, an occasional FAKE bass/guitar/drum. Usually only instrument is piano.

Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald as well as other great artists rarely if ever appeared with instruments. They are vocalists, I want to hear them sing, I couldn't care less whether they play any instrument besides their voice.

- Trying to imitate an R&B along with Hip-Hop/Rap. You'll see how they try to fuse it in together. Pop & Rap... yeah it doesn't mix. :yuck:

Music genres constantly get blended, that's how new ones are formed.

Just because you are influenced by them doesn't mean you have to sound like them.

when people knew what "RESPECT" meant.

Perhaps you should learn what it is before you ask others to do the same.

What I meant as a fanbase is those armies of teenyboppers who will try and out-swear you with the most "ridikulus grammer mispell1ngz 3v4r!" And yes, you can see me showing a bit of respect to Stephanie in my influences reason. I absolutely RESENT Ke$ha. Along with that stupid name, you've hit the nail in the head about her songs. "Let's get drunk." "Let's party, baby!" "You are my drug." If you know any kids who are influenced by her, feel sorry for the parents. Imagine they'll have to deal with their "precious daughter" in court for drug possession and underage drinking. :grumpy:

When The Beatles decided to make a song about sex, they hid it deeply behind other lyrics for people to try and understand. If you listen to most songs about it today, they just yell it out. SEX! And most of the genre of Pop has dancer/microphone only. That's about 80% of it, but we all know Michael Jackson did it, too. But there's one thing that makes him stand out, HIS VOICE. Yes, he was a talented singer, but he was ALSO good at dancing. He put on a two-way show. These days, no one can sing (usually lip-syncing) and dance live. They usually just prance around the stage and have a group of background dancers behind them. And about lip-syncing, the venues like Top of the Pops MADE them lip-sync, in order to not mess up the performance. These days, they do it on choice. Why? Because lip-sync = recorded voice = autotune = good-sounding voice. Ever notice why people these days say,"Why do these kids have no respect?" One, I blame irresponsible parents, and two, I blame Pop. It usually makes them go either A. Drunk and horny (Ke$ha) or B. Prissy, bratty, and teenybopper. (Katy Perry) It usually has B. with 70% while A. has 30%. Bratty kids ask for basically everything, they whine to get what they want. A. people tend to grow up to become college drunks, bums, poor lower-class people who have s3x the most and make more of their inbred type. Same with the B, as Katy tends to influence them to be more "revealing" and end up having s3x as a minor and adding MORE inbreds. They all make up the lower-class, while smart people tend to be middle-upper, because of their smart decisions. They don't fall under influences of a musician's acts, and they focus more. In all fairness, music has more influence than parents nowadays.:grumpy:

The Beatles may have hid it, others not so much.

Led Zeppelin

Marvin Gaye(Another one who rarely used instruments)

Etta James

And drugs?
Jimi Hendrix

Jefferson Airplane

And some Woodstock footage.

I can post more if you'd like, there are plenty showing both sex and drugs in classic music.

Good ol' sixties. People wanted to become free from the corrupt government and war. Of course there are signs of sex and drugs everywhere, but it's how they do it that counts. These days, they abuse it so much. Most of the people I know just want to have sex 24/7. Back then, it was either to make kids or to refresh themselves. Now, it's just for fun. Woodstock, possibly the greatest live event of all time. Inspiration, moving music, and a damn good audience! They put up with storms, rain, mud, death, and hardships to listen to some good music! Let me ask you, what kind of genre of music do you listen to?

Lolwut?

The Government for the most part hasn't been any less corrupt since then. Why do I get the feeling that you are making up most of these so called 'facts' for the sake of argument? Why do you sin drinking, sex and even drugs? I'm 20 years old and I drink. My friend who is younger, currently serving in the military over in Europe where there is a lower drinking age and hes out drinking homemade brews in Germany. Does that automatically make me an idiot, and somehow a lower class citizen? Where I live suggests otherwise.

Your whole sex rants can't be more off base. Teenagers have sex because they are horny. Adults have sex because they are horny.

Pop isn't alone in the whole sex/drugs/alcohol. Every genre has references.

Alcohol/Drugs

Drugs

Drugs

Sex

Sex

Sex

You can guess it...

I can sit here and give you songs all night long from all sorts of genres from all different decades. You are confusing something being mentioned as motivation to go do it. Musicians write songs for all sorts of reasons. Songs are stories being told with added musical qualities. Some times they are real, sometimes they are fake. But in the end they are all stories.

Sex, drugs and alcohol come up so often because such a high amount of people in this world participate in these things. They all enhance your life in one way or another. Singing about sex doesn't make you a whore. Same way singing about alcohol doesn't make you an alcoholic and drugs and druggy.

Life would be dull, boring and suicidal if it wasn't for these fun social activities. Do they have a downside? Of course, as does eating to much ice cream or being on GTP to much does. I live middle class citizen CENTRAL. We here participate in these things just as much as lower and upper class citizens.

Your whole thing of "Why do these kids have no respect?" is played every generation. My dad got it as a kid. His parents got it as a kid. So on and so forth. The same thing with music. My dads parents didn't really like his music etc.. Of course being the rock/metal freak I am, my dad has no problems with it and likes it himself. And loves the fact that I do. \m/

They didn't abuse it back then? What are you smoking? Are you using Woodstock as an example of how modern people do to much drugs and have to much sex? I don't even want to know how many STI transfers happened during that festival or how many joints were smoked, or how many pills were swallowed etc.. Woodstock is a great example of how sex, drugs and alcohol can help peoples lives. Well sexual infections aren't so great but you get it. People still go through all of that in the name of listening to music. If anything is the problem, its violence. But I still think violence makes some music better. Mosh pits ftw. But that is something completely different.

Oh, did you say something about being annoyed at the government. Pepper wrote you a remedy.

60's, meet the 90's. It kicked a lot of ass too.

I admit I have limited taste in music, but listening to "Modern Pop" makes me angry. Actual anger. It's bleeding awful stuff, with (90%) poor vocals and a hideous musical mix. If you press mute, it's bearable (engage male hormones).

And then we get onto the lyrics. These songs are all about sex, sex, and more sex, then maybe something about money, then more sex. When I hear some of the absolute filth come out of the mouths of these "popstars", I'm shocked, and it gets even worse when you consider the 11-14 year old wannabes.

Also, I struggle to identify the end of one song, and the start of another. </rage>

Note: I'm actually in the demographic that this music is aimed at ( I think it's around 18-25 mark), not 50 and saying "back in my day)

I couldn't agree more. Not only is it 11-14 year-olds with all this kinda 🤬, I've heard kids who are just 8 singing explicit pop song lyrics...What has society turned into? And what might society be in 20 years when most of the kids now have nothing in their head but these terrible song lyrics telling them to get drunk etc, etc.

EDIT: I also think there is little actual talent within pop music. All this tech-y lip syncing and pitch changing means most 'popstars' don't even have to be able to sing.

Don't blame music for 🤬 parents.

My Mom's boyfriends' 12 year old nephew just got caught smoking pot. You wanna know who I blame? His mom who never actually punishes the kid, that's who. Not music, not video games, not movies, THE PEOPLE THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO BE RAISING HIM!!!!!!

What has society turned into? And what might society be in 20 years when most of the kids now have nothing in their head but these terrible song lyrics telling them to get drunk etc, etc.

Not sure, how did the kids in the 60's,70's,80's and 90's turn out?

I'm more worried about the intolerant idiots who can't fathom the fact people share an opinion other than their own.

The thing that bothers me is the amount of attention and appreciation that something with absolutely no artistic merit gets. Is it really too much to ask for some people to write their own songs, and actually sing in tune?

Exactly. I also have major issues with anyone who's recently graduated from FexActor and the likes - really, it's very nice that you can sing in tune, but that's only of limited use if you're just going to release an album covering other people's songs. What exactly does Joe McElderry bring to the table by doing a buzzy-synthed up version of something from Nerina Pallot's back catalogue? Not even a re-imagined or reinvigorated song from another decade either - one released 6 months earlier. Essentially they're empty vessels in which record labels can shove an existing song and use to sell a few albums; although I can't see why anyone would bite - it'd be a bit like buying another copy of a book you already own because it's been given a new typeface and Simon Cowell's mugshot stamped on the back.

There are a few exceptions, of course. I'm told Diana Vickers is at least in the same room as the person writing her songs, so she gets a brownie point. Except I've since had to take it away after I discovered her lobotomised version of Hit by the Sugarcubes. So close, Diana, so close.

I really think it's unfair to say an artist has no talent simply because they don't write all their songs. I'm sure you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would ever say Elvis or Frank Sinatra were talentless despite the fact neither wrote their own songs. Even god(aka Eric Clapton) himself relies heavily on other songwriters.
