I really think it's unfair to say an artist has no talent simply because they don't write all their songs

Funnily enough that's not actually the point I was making. Raw talent's all very well and good - the ability to sing, for example; if you can do that I'm very pleased for you - but when there are so many, many many many people with the ability to do so, the talent to sing alone isn't going to get you anywhere. I had piano lessons up until the age of about 15, so yes compared to someone who's never been near an ivory keyboard in their life I have 'a talent'. However, in no way does that make me comparable to Scott Joplin.

The 'talent' of being able to sing is lovely, but when thousands upon thousands of people can do the same thing your 'talent' doesn't become quite so interesting anymore. What sets people like Elvis & Frank apart is a unique selling point, if you will - a reason to actively listen to them as apposed to anyone else. Nobody (except 1500 impersonators in Nevada) sound like Elvis. Nobody (except Seth Macfarlane... a bit) sounds like Frank Sinatra. I'd be very impressed if you can come up with Joe McElderry's USP, outside of being 19, being on the telly for a few weeks and sounding inoffensive enough. It's certainly not his voice, since he sounds like Will Young doing an impression of a choirboy, and it's definitely not the collection of songs he's had a go at, since they're poorly chosen and just don't sound right with him at the helm.

He's nothing new, either. Here's a table of everyone who finished in the top 3 of XFactor over the last 7 serieseseses.

Apart from perhaps Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke (whose albums received mixed reviews), none of them have been remotely well received. The majority of them in fact have been entirely forgotten about - mostly because there's not a lot setting them apart from any other similar person or group. Except Stacey Solomon. She went on to star in an advert for East Midland Trains!

This isn't me being a snob, this is genuinely the issue with the likes of X Factor - it churns out hundreds of people, voted towards the finish line based on (let's be honest here) comparative looks and how pitch perfect they are. Once they're outside of the studio, however, those two things don't get you very far on their own - and none of them seem to be able to cough up anything additional to keep anyone interested.

What I meant as a fanbase is those armies of teenyboppers who will try and out-swear you with the most "ridikulus grammer mispell1ngz 3v4r!" And yes, you can see me showing a bit of respect to Stephanie in my influences reason. I absolutely RESENT Ke$ha. Along with that stupid name, you've hit the nail in the head about her songs. "Let's get drunk." "Let's party, baby!" "You are my drug." If you know any kids who are influenced by her, feel sorry for the parents. Imagine they'll have to deal with their "precious daughter" in court for drug possession and underage drinking.

I can't believe people can get so wound up about the music other people like.

Once they're outside of the studio, however, those two things don't get you very far on their own - and none of them seem to be able to cough up anything additional to keep anyone interested.

I agree 100% that there will likely be no artist that comes from those shows and has a long lasting career(at least as far as musicians are concerned). I think a part of it is that the producers literally set everything up for them, they even practically chose what songs they will sing. I'm guessing that isn't just how it is on the show but also while they are under contract after they get to the top 3 or whatever which would explain why their first album or two sell well than drops after they switch labels. I think the people that go on those shows would be more well received if they were allowed to be creative instead of constantly being pushed into doing something that doesn't fit. For instance I was watching America's Got Talent(nothing else was on) and there was some chick that wrote her own song, granted it wasn't a great song but they made her come back and sing someone else's song.

Anyways, the fact those shows suck isn't really on topic, which is what? Oh right, modern music turns altar boys into drug addicted sex addicts.

For instance I was watching America's Got Talent(nothing else was on) and there was some chick that wrote her own song, granted it wasn't a great song but they made her come back and sing someone else's song.

I remember my brother had it on, and there was a group of three kids, who were 5 or 6 years old I think, and they rapped on the show for their act. The first half of it was a cover of "ABC", and then they did "their own" music afterwards.

The best part was the judges asking about ABC, and the kid says "the producers made us sing that".

JLS and Olly Murs are doing good.To me I think JLS might be big in America if they do go there,RiRi seems to like JLS,well she did say they have talent and they could be big.

I really respect most modern artists. People who become successful in this world with talent are great, but people who become successful without talent gains my respect.

Pop stands for popular, modern popular music spans a massive range of genres, you can't box it as one style. Some is good, some is bad.


People who gain success without talent often don't warrent respect. Understand that in the music industry, who you know is the most important thing of all, people networking is everything. A record label can make or break an artist and many untalented (or just average/mediocre) artists with good contacts will make it big due to a label backing aquired through knowing the right people.

The ones that deserve respect are those who make it off of their own hard work.
