Why is it that you get the white backwards L bordering the image then you try to be clever and match the background color?

I just use transparent .png's instead, but it makes me wonder.

It happens when GTP has to resize your avatar to fit the 100x100/120x120 limit. Resize your avatar manually, and it'll go away
