Who was GT5 made for?

^It's not a racing sim. Says so on the box.

And yes, I do take my car out for a casual drive... What the hell are you on about? There's something called "the back roads" out here.

When I take my real life S2000 out to the back roads or the track, I don't come home thinking "gee, I need to adjust the camber by -1 degrees". I just don't. I just drive it, and enjoy the very unique characteristics of the car.

I've had 3 cars, and I do the same for all of them. I don't need a race to have fun. The very act of driving is fun to me.

People wonder why I have an S2000, and then go buy a POS BMW E30 318is. Because I enjoy cars as they are. I don't feel the need to pretend I know better than the engineers at Honda and BMW who spent years setting the car up.

I think ultimately that's what GT5 is for: For people who simply enjoy driving, and can't be bothered to mess with an engineer's work (said engineer who has far more experience than anyone here). I've taken a slow ass Daihatsu and just cruised at 30mph through London and Rome..., all for fun, enjoying the sound, enjoying the scenery, and enjoying the very act of driving.

I also dislike clowns with entry level BMWs that think they are driving an M3.

They get roasted ALL-day by a little 1.8L.

I drive the E30 like a grandma bro. It's awfully slow. There's a reason why it's my daily, not my S2000.

S2000 on the other hand..., you can't blame me for driving it like an M3 when the top is down and the engine is singing at 8000rpm.

I think most street cars are almost perfectly set up to their factory specs. Some racing cars may be "detuned" like you mentioned...
I suspect premium cars have more accurate "stock" settings than the standards, relating to the more time and effort put into them.

For example, [GT5] doesn't require a wheel. That took a pretty substantial development to make work reasonably well. I don't think any PC simulator on the market can be used at all without a wheel (you would fail instantly).
Keyboard steering is pretty much always less-than-ideal, and driving with a mouse (a la Live for Speed) is kinda awkward, but you can play pretty much anything with a controller. You probably won't be a world record holder, but then again, people can overcome almost any handicap with enough practice. I myself like to casually play LFS with a controller from time to time.

If you think about it, RC cars have the most "realistic" physics you can get, and they're still drivable. There's even RC racing and drifting. Compared to those, full-size cars move in slow-motion.

I hope this longwinded post helps shine some light on the audience PD was creating GT5 for. Sorry if you ended up with a game you don't like, but they made it for me. Now back to trying to beat that blasted X1 challenge :-D
One of the best attitudes in response to this thread I've seen yet. 👍

I really can't agree with what you're saying...
[snip]
...I hope that at some point Kaz picks up the box, reads the front and says we need to do a bit more to be the definitive "Real Driving Simulator".
I agree completely with this post.

Tuning is a key part in motor racing. Like it or not, as much as people like to think GT is a driving Sim, not really, its a racing sim. You don't just take a car out for a casual drive. And even if you pretend to due that, you can only do it on closed circuits intended for auto racing. Ya GT5 has everyday cars, but you do racing in one form or another with them.
You're not going out onto public roads (though the Nordschleife is a notable exception), but you're not really "racing" in a proper sense either. The "one big track day" description is the best I've heard yet for what GT tries to be.

I also dislike clowns with entry level BMWs that think they are driving an M3.

They get roasted ALL-day by a little 1.8L.
Is this really necessary?

Not to mention you've completely missed the point of what dothackRAVE was trying to say.

This is the funniest post I have read today :)

I just saw this thread and read the OP saying that cars aren't set to their factory / stock settings in GT5. Can anybody please elaborate on this and tell me whether PD used incorrect data for the cars or is it just a reference to the driving aids which mostly work as a game difficulty tool rather than a realistic car setup tool?

Unemployed people.
A fan like me, who loves the game and as a intense job, cannot simple do the endurance races.
A simple save would do

I don't agree GT4 had no save for the endurance races.

I too have a full time job (varies between 40 and 60 hours a week) but I managed to do them in GT4 as well Just not very shortly after one and other.

Every now and than I can get a weekend for myself and ignore the rest of the world. In GT4 it took me over a year to do them all but eventually I did them:sly:

I asume GT5 will be the same for me when I get to level 25 (still at lvl20).
The one thing I do miss is the save option in the championships becouse now I even have to do them during the weekend :guilty:

If you have a save option you only use it if you want to.
If you have a job and a famly its complicated for you to do a 24 hours race without having a divorce :p

Send your wifeoff for a weekend with her mother:idea:
haha

I'll have to agree with you that for me it is also a bit harder than it was a vew years back:guilty:

Haha! This is so true. I'm thinking for me it's going to be leaving my PS3 on for several days (week?) and doing a few hours at a time with it paused in between. One advantage with the game copy feature is that I could put it on a second PS3 and still have my main PS3 if the family wants to play something else. I think the 24 hour race would be the most fun with a bunch of friends trading off -- this would have been a cool opportunity for PD to innovate with the online feature. Say a room where you could check in/check out to complete the race together. The cash and xp would be split between say 4 drivers, but everyone would get their gold (or whatever place you end up with).

Great well thought out response mk500. Cheers.

great reply, MK500 - well thought out, well explained, and well said!

Thanks a lot for the kind words guys. This thread was a great idea. It's nice to have a thread like this where a high percentage of the posts are actually part of a discussion vs. just everyone trying to start a flame war.

GT was made for me because I don't have enough money to afford Ferraris, Lamborghinis and my beloved Corvette. I like cars and and this brings a close albeit digital version of them to my possession so can race, stare, speed, crash, burnout, donuts, sit with the ebrake and rev the engine and any other thing I desire to do in cars I will never possibly drive.

(i play the "other" game for the same reason and enjoy it just as much)

I have been lurking here for awhile. I just created my account to post here.

This game was made for me.

I am 35 years old and I started racing snowmobiles when I was 12 cause I could not race cars that young. At 16 I started building my Grandmother's Dodge Diplomat into a Hobby Stock race car for use on Dirt circle tracks in my home town. I started racing that at 18 and quit at 21. I then started toying with a friend's unused open wheel midget. I raced that (as a small hobby) for a couple years and gave up racing do to lack of funds.
My brother then bought a Nascar and started racing that on a regional circuit. I drove that a couple times but by that point I was tired of going left all the time. It was at 25 that I decide I wanted to become a "Driver".
I have owned several great cars, Rx7, Supra, S4, and am now toying with the idea of getting an M3. but I digress.

I am a very casual gamer. I only play 4-10 hours per week. I am level 15 and have several cars I "WANT" to drive.

I do not purchase cars for use in the events. for instance.. unless I win a miata i will never do the NR-A Event. Likewise I am not really into classic cars so the classic events will go unfinished as well, again unless I win one.
I love my '05 Mini, and I just purchased my Audi R8 5.2 and I am sure I will love that too.

KY wanted this game to be the "Driving Sim". He wanted you to take your fav cars out on the town. Traffic, lights, rush hour traffic, buses and peds. He wanted a "GTA" style game with his GT physics engine. He wanted you to leave your garage and drive to the track to have your track day. ALAS the PS3 with it's whopping 512megs of ram was not up to the task. So it got pulled and is the largest reason for the huge delay and is the basis for the upcoming GT6 which sorry to say will probably not make an appearance on the PS3.

Alright onto the version of GT5 (prolly better named GT4 r.2). PD after pulling the core out of their game had to struggle and hustle to get the memory leaks plugged and roll out this stripped down version of KY's dream. Sony then starts forcing PD to get a holiday release and this is what we are left with. They are doing a great job getting bugs worked out and better optimized for use with the mind boggingly underpowered PS3.

Menu: Who cares? Good Enough for now, I say.

Graphics: No matter what is said, this game is pretty. The shadows are my only gripe here. I have never seen any screen tearing. Should be fixable with patches.

Content;

Cars: The premium cars are amazing, The standard cars are a bonus.. They were already made so why not use them. My only gripe here is in the selection of what was made premium... do we really need that many Daihatsu's. Why aren't newer cars premium.... Veyron for instance. Easily improved with DLC.

Events: The special events are mostly a joke but some are great.
Karts: tons of fun but I could leave it out.
Nascar: Hard to master irl. I have tried. Kudos to those that can do it. Kinda pointless in this game.
Top Gear: Oh how I wish this was better. Sadly I say It could go.
AMG Ring tests: Exactly what should be in this game. Awesome. Gimme more like this.
World Tour: Exactly what should be in this game. Awesome gimme more like this.

Type's of racing: I will probably piss off a lot of people here, but.... if this is truly a driving sim then the following really have no place here.
F1: there are better games out there for this. Go play them.
Nascar: there are better games out there for this. Go play them.

Tracks: they are fine.. Not enough but easily implemented with DLC packs.

Tuning: Too much I say. IMO the game is geared towards the average “driver” not “racer”. When in the real world is the average driver going to build a full race stage 3 car with a fully customizable tranny. What average drive even knows what an “ideal” gear ratio is. In the real world an enthusiast is going to do upgrades in their garage. With real world tools. Exhaust, intake, possible stiffen the shocks, and upgrade the turbo. Maybe even pull out seats and add a roll bar kit.

Game Play;

Physics: I have no Idea here. I am neither a programmer or a physicist. The game is damn good and tons of fun.

Progression: I wish PD would have made the game harder. I wish the licenses were tied into game progression again. As well as having the xp level system. No one irl goes from a Honda Civic to a McClaren AMG in a matter of hours.

AI: needs some serious work.

Online: I really don't play as I have a bandwidth problem. I wish the game would only try and go online when you tell it to. 1.05 made online an actual part of the game and I look forward to getting a better connection and using it.

I hope mmo is the future of the GT series. I don't think there should be an end to a game like this as irl there are always new innovations and designs in the automotive world. The future is limitless and the game should reflect that.

In summary this game is really designed for the enthusiast. It does not really cater to racers as it really is limited in this scope. The amount of premium cars and track options are actually pretty limited as well but can be easily increased. Fans need to be patient for fixes to be implemented and the game to improve. I believe that for those hoping GT6 will be a better racer may be sorely disappointed. As stated above KY/PD's direction for the game is going to be going in a different direction. Gt has a great future and I hope they can stay true to their vision.

As a racer I give a 6/10
As a driver I give it a solid 8.5/10
