Why they call 350Z of Z33?

I have no idea what the hell the title of this thread means. I thought by entering and taking a look, things would be come clear. However, upon reading what's already been posted here, I am more confused than before.

Z33 is part of the 350Z's chassis code, Like 1990's 300ZX is Z32.

It refers to the factory code for the car. I'm not sure, but I believe it goes something like this:

Z = Z, of course

3 = 3.0 Liter engine

3 = 3rd revision of this model

I have a Z31 Turbo as my winter car, here's a pic:

Yeah, that makes sense... Because i watched some Best motoring vidz and they keep calling the 350Z of Z33...

I suppose its like the Skylines being R32, R33, R34 etc, although following CFM's reasoning, it would make the Skyline a 3ltr, when its actually a 2.6ltr. Its probably just an inhouse naming code like BMW's E30 (early 3 series i believe) or Porsches 911 naming - 930 (the first Turbo), 964, 993, 996, 997 etc or Lotus's 'Types' - S1 Elise is the Type-111 and the Mk1 Lotus Cortina is the Type-26. Its something that factory development teams can use to identify new models of cars when existing versions are still being made.

I was guessing about the displacement thing, the reasoning is that the Z31 is the first year of the 300ZX,and the first year of the 3.0 liter V6. Prior to that is was the 240Z, 260Z, and 280Z as the years went by, and they had inline 6 cylinder engines. I have no idea what the codes are for the earlier Z's. I guess that dosn't make sense because the new Z33 has a 3.5 liter V6, which I forgot about.:dunce:

Nice cars there CFM, but isn't that 300ZX a RWD "winter" car? It just struck me as an odd winter car; most people have AWD for their winter cars. Although, almost anything is better for the winter than a Miata.

Its just the chassis code for the car. Like Cracker said, its like the GT-Rs. They have the R32, the R33, and R34. The Z cars have the Z31, Z32, and now Z33. The Silvia/240SX had the S13, S14, and S15. Honda had the DC2 Integra and now has the DC5 RSX, along with the current EP3 Civic hatch. My car, a 2nd Gen DSM is called the D32 chassis. You never hear them called that since everyone just refers to them as 1G or 2G, but it really is a D32 chassis. They just give the chassis a code to easilly differentiate it from others.

I think we have already had enough explainations on why they call the 350Z a Z33, one or two was enough.

oh and R30-R34 refers to Skyline not just GTR.

3 = 3.0 Liter engine

Yes as already mentioned this is incorrect.

Nice Z31 and Miata BTW :)

good ol' chassis codes. if anyone says SW20 they are talking about a 2nd gen MR2 and AW11 is first gen MR2. FC(some other numbers and letters) is 2nd gen RX7 FD is 3rd. oh and someone forgot the S12............the old 200SX nevermind.

There many codes people forgot, they just meantioned some of the popular ones. What about S10 and S11 or even earlier, but most people didnt even know silvia was around that early.

Z for the chassis, and the number I believe is simply the generation of it, since the Z series has been around for quite awhile, just like the skyline.

US naming is kinda meaningless, as the 80's 200SX was the S12, and the 240SX was the S13 and S14 here.

Toyota's codes work like so... AW11
A - Engine used = 4A-GE or 4A-GZE
W - Chassis
1 - chassis
1 - trim package

So SW20: Engine = 3S-GTE; MR2 Chassis; Second generation chassis; 0 means turbo (NA's where SW21's in the US, with the 5S-FE engine... a Camry 4 cyl :crazy: )

Nissan's are pretty straight forward...

I just bought it a month ago and have driven it through 2 bouts of freezing rain and a small 2" or so of snow already. Goes right through like a champ, mostly due to it's porky weight. Actually it is much easier to drive so far than an old S-10 I used to drive for the winter several years ago. I live in the city and have only two 4-lane well plowed roads to get to work 8 miles away, so no major worries. If worse comes to worse, I can drive the wife's Protoge:yuck: FWD sux.👎 I'll never buy another FWD car again, and won't let my wife get one either from now on! :lol:

Hahaha. I sort of forgot about the 300ZXs being such a big car.

Really don't like the Protoge, eh? I always liked that car, and wanted the Mazdaspeed before I got my 2.5RS. And hell, if I would save more than $20 on insurance, I would sell the WRX for the Mazda 3. Buuuut, bleh.

Anywho, very nice garage you've got there. I like 'em both.

Have you run the Miata through the track or autocross yet?

For a FWD budget compact, the protoge is very nice and handles surprisingly well. Don't sell your WRX for a Mazda 3, though. You'll be disappointed in the power for sure. Not to mention the WRX is way cooler. The 3 does have a fairly strong engine with nice low-end torque. (We drove one at the dealer last summer along with a Mazda 6 V-6 5-speed, and an RX-8 6MT, all very nice cars).The Mazdaspeed 3 will probably kick ass, tho.

The MSM will be autocrossed next year, as when I got it the Auto-X season was 2/3rds over and I wanted to get the engine broke in a bit before really thrashing it. The 300 ZXT is for the local 1/4 strip this summer too.:trouble: Good times all summer! :) Btw, I know you Auto-X, but have you ever ran your WRX at the Strip? if so, what kinda times you getting?

I wasn't going to sell it for the car, I was going to sell it for the price. I pay more for insurance and car payments than most people pay on rent. *shakes head* Oh well, I'm young and stupid and freakin' love it.

Ahhh I getcha. There was some guy that autcrossed his R32 with 136 miles on the odometer! :eek: I thought it was pretty cool in my car's case. Subaru suggests 1000 mile break in, but being paranoid, I waited till 2000 miles. Which I just passed the day before an autocross. She was born on the track! :D

No, I haven't taken her out to the strip. Not really interested either. I suck in straightline driving, or anything that requires any sort of quick shifting. For instance, tonight, I was blasting down an on ramp 3rd gear 6000rpms and shifted to... second. RPMs skyrocketed to 8000-9000k RPMs for a fraction of a second before I depressed the clutch again. :dunce: I feel sooooooooo stupid.
