I really don't see what people are complaining about with Protasov's livery. It actually looks OK to me, if not particularly great.

Same. It's not the prettiest livery in the world but it's certainly not awful. I didn't think it looked too bad on the Fiesta and will probably be fine on the DS3 in the flesh.

Protasov's car looks better when it's in actual light

I hope they all win.
Honestly, the long-term viability of RGT is questionable. The RGT Cup was created to try and stimulate entries after there were practically none with the creation of Group R. It's a niche championship at best, and historical examples - like the Prodrive-built Porsche 911 RS of the mid-80s - have shown that manufacturers don't support entries. They don't see rallying as a platform to build on, since GT cars are unsuited to rallying.

That's a shame, as RGT is exactly what the WRC needs right now. A Porsche 911 skidding about may not be anywhere near as fast as a WRC car (I've heard they're roughly on par with R5 cars, another category which could do rallying a lot of good), but it's far more exciting than all of the 4WD thermite hatches are combined.

On the topic of R5, how does the homologation work? If one wanted too and had the money, could they just go ahead and build a Lada Riva R5 car, or would that not be possible?

A better shot of Protasov:

Not really. It's always been a niche category, and the FIA doesn't want to over-emphasise their role. They're simply too big and too unwieldy to drive in a sport where short wheelbases and four-wheel drive are the keys to success.

It works the same as any homologation - you need to build a minimum number of production cars per year to get it approved. I believe that number is lower if you produce cars built to WRC, R1, R2 or R3 specifications as well.

It's still too busy. Too much fine detail in the design that will be lost at speed. A lot like the Pepsi "Fire and Ice" design that FPR used in V8 Supercars a few years ago, or the SOPR Infiniti Q50 in the BTCC this year.

So, spoiler alert (although it's not like there's live coverage of shakedown or anything) Loeb goes fastest on his first run of shakedown - perhaps not as rusty he's he has been making out after all...

Alternatively the conditions were probably better for him being first on the road (looked a little muddy from what I've seen) and I doubt the VWs will be showing too much speed yet. Loeb is on the road 14th tomorrow so that should prove interesting.

Top five were...

1. Sébastien Loeb 2min 21.0sec
2. Kris Meeke + 0.4sec
3. Sébastien Ogier + 1.1sec
4. Andreas Mikkelsen + 1.2sec
5. Robert Kubica + 1.3sec

The Rally Sweden entry list has been published, with Paddon, Hanninen, Protasov, Henning Solberg, and Sołowow all returning in private entries.

"9 time Sebastien Rally Champion is leading the Monte Carlo Rally after first stage has been driven, which is impressive considering that he hasn't driven in a rally event for over 1 year before the rally started"

Watched the stage live, incredible! Wished we saw some of Loeb's onboard. What rallies is Loeb running this year?

Latvala looked very twitchy compared to other people.

He won Rallye du Var in November. Not quite a year ago. ;)
Oh yeah and that was with his wife co-driving.

I now have this mental image of Mr. and Mrs. Loeb taking a detour from the stage to do a brief bit of grocery shopping.
