Nobody wants to go back to Group A. The cars were big, slow, and the minimum homologation requirement excluded all but the big manufacturers in a sport that is dependent upon manufacturer support. The larger cars do not sell, and the sport would die.

Big show in Fafe for pre Portugal testing

Who won at the weekend then? I saw Saturdays highlights and Ogier was leading...

Well, Leo finished strong but didn't win the DMACK Drive trophy...

I think it was Ogier or Latvala who won, but I'm not sure.

Latvala crashed out on day 1, it was Ogier, Hirvinon and Ostberg the top three...

Well, Leo finished strong but didn't win the DMACK Drive trophy...
He was 8th (last out of the finishers), looks like he is about 10th quickest driver in the championship behind some with far less experience, Max Vatanen won 2 stages. If his only goal was to get to the end he did well (even if Rally2 was needed on Saturday).

Yeah. I'm watching overall and DMACK Drive trophy and that's it...

However, Leo's said, several times, that he's honoured to even be in Europe, and he's just there to learn. He admitted to being surprised - he was faster than he expected. That's why I - and Leo - are happy. He's happy and he's said so in interviews etc., to have finished a rally in WRC. The bad luck he has is just terrible, though. :( broke a suspension bit, which caused his driveline to break... All because of one bump around a blind corner.

I wonder how he would've done without the damage... Not expecting him to win, but, he might be able to pull off a top 5 or podium. :)

Yeah, if you're twenty seconds off the leader's pace on a three-kilometer stage like that, you don't have much business being there in the first place. A top five result - much less a podium finish - is completely out of the question.

It was his first competition stage in an FF car, ever. He even said that his plan was to "make it through the first stage" [to not embarrass himself,] after which point he went into a comfortable 8th position.

He's not any good on tarmac stages and he knows it.

He/we consider it a success, given that his stage 3 time was actually one of the fastest... Which is not bad at all for someone in his third stage ever in an FF car. Ever.

Stages 6, 7, and 8 really cost him a lot, though - the broken driveline/suspension etc. really did him in.

Stage 12 - 16 he did well, improved his driving... As he has been doing for quite a few years now.

Have you noticed a pattern? :D :D He's out there to learn from the best in the world... And he's already starting to improve. But, if he keeps up with all of this bragging about not crashing, we'll have to take his "Crazy" title away.

I am not really sure what this has to do with anything, since Portugal is a gravel rally. It might have the odd patch of tarmac, but not enough to meet the FIA's requirements to qualify as mixed-surface.

I'm not really sure how he is going to learn, considering that there is no mentoring programme. Most of the WRC teams don't pay attention to the junior categories, unless they're looking for a guest driver. And then they only look at WRC-2.

The first stage was tarmac. It was a special stage - 3 km. You said about how slow he was in that first stage, and he answered you. Please watch the video this time.

Only 8 finished in the DMACK cup!

... His goal was to finish. He succeeded. Next time, he says he'll push harder...

3km in a rally of 339.46 km, that's err... 1%. Like saying Indianapolis is a two surface race track because of a strip of bricks.

Leo:

"That stage... was a super special. It was awesome to see the WRC cars going around, but for us, was just about getting through, and not hurting the car, and getting it to the first gravel stages..."

:dunce:

Watch the video. I beg you. You will understand.

Is Toyota waiting this long with the Yaris to find another way to cheat themselves into a championship again?

We're talking about the 3 km. stage.
It doesn't matter if it's three kilometres or three hundred kilometres: you take every competitive kilometre you can get. You don't just trundle around looking to make it to the finish.

They don't intend to enter the Yaris. At all. They outsourced development to Motorsport Italia for the sake of following its development trajectory - they don't want to commit to a project for the short term, and for that, they need a car that they can develop over the long term.

And that episode with the ST165 came about because the car was seriously down on power. I'm not defending it, but in the aftermath of Group B and Group S, the move to Group A was a knee-jerk reaction. It was needed, but the FIA didn't bother to update the regulations to suit rally cars. They just went off the Group A touring car regulations, and it wasn't until the ST165 that they realised just how out-dated the rules were. That's what gave birth to the first generation of World Rally Car regulations.

I was not serious, it was a tongue-in-cheek joke at their past. It is still, to this day, the best/cleverest cheat I've ever seen. Though I think you mean ST205 rather than 165. Unless they were using that device with the 165 and 185 as well.

That was pure genius indeed.

An other constructor is rumored to be testing a car under wrc regulation lately.

First I've heard of it. Toyota have made no secret of the Yaris WRC's existence, and there has been no further word on the Tanrazov MG3 project, but as far as I'm aware, there is nothing else in development.

Are you sure you're not confusing it with the various R5 projects that are in development?

It's not a r5 project, I'm sure it's a wrc and it's not the mg3.
Unfortunaly I don't have a lot of informations about it.

The info is from the same source who gave me the location of toyota testing 1 week before they indeed test there.

sorry for my bad english

Came back from a 3 days private test of renault sport with the new clio 4 r3t.

(sorry for the quality of my phone)

Great little car that sounds like a mini wrc :p.

The Jim Clark Rally in Scotland has been cancelled after an accident where a car left the road and hit a group of spectators. Sky have reported that a 49 year old man has been killed and many others have been seriously injured. No further official details yet (Twitter suggests 3 are dead).

Remember when spectating do not stand on the outside of bends or in places where cars are likely to lose control like after jumps.

Update
3 confirmed fatalities, 2 more were taken to hospital by air ambulance, one of those is in a critical condition.

Picture from Yazeed Al-Rajhi on Instagram.

Road order is causing big problems today, as such it's an Hyundai 1-2 with Martin Prokop 3rd.

I reckon they know something that we don't - probably the entry of a serious competitor from 2017; Toyota, in all likelihood.

A new format for the 2015 WRC season is gaining traction. It's a little complicated, but each rally will be divided up into two legs, with points awarded at the end of each. It's a system that the Australian Rally Championship uses to award points to successful drivers without completely penalising those who are forced out. The power stage would be reimagined, with drivers paired up based on their positions, and having a shoot-out for final points.
