On a side note...I did a little practice before the race on RH tires. At fuji I can run faster that some of you. I'll probably qualify mid pack at Tokyo. The tires don't worry me as much as being surrounded by drivers for turn 1.

Some footage from the start of Tuesdays race. What a battle for 3rd place early on!

And here is some of my racing after my first pit stop. At around 5:30 I challenged lucky for the lead. I wasn't too keen on his pit stop fake out but I just waited for the right moment to pass and I figured I could out brake him with my fresh tires once the opportunity presented itself.

Wow thanks Chuyler. I forgot to save the race so I didn't get to see the close battle between Drex, Greyfox and I. That was really intense. And thanks to those two for not taking us out. Great racing. I'm using a analog so I may seem a bit choppy but I do my best to stay clean. Can't wait for Tokyo, one of my favs.

Same here. It'll be my first attempt at keeping up with RM racers on RH tires. If I can tail some consistent drivers I think I'll be able to make up time on the straight. Tire strategy will completely depend on how well I can effectively draft.

Accident avoidance will also be important. Cars tend to ping-pong off the walls so if someone in front of you is getting close to a wall, its best to back off so you don't ram them when they lose speed from the wall.

I made a excel chart for the standings, but i have no idea how to post it in the forum. I'm ok with uploading a new chart each week, so i'm not expecting it to be functional. It just looks better. Is there anyway to post it like a picture? thanks.

Copy range / chart in excel. Open ms paint with new blank image. Paste. Save as jpg. Upload as image. Good luck.

Best thing to do is use google docs, then you can publish a link to the spreadsheet.

How many laps are we running at Tokyo?

Don't know yet, have yet to do any testing. I usually take a average lap time from the leaders on mediums and divide it by 60mins. So if your practicing you should be able to determine a good guess on how many laps. Sorry I can't be more helpful, if I get to do some testing today I'll just base it on my soft tire times(usually close to the leaders medium times).

Does everyone know yet if they'll be able to make the race this week? I hope everyone who missed last week will make it, and keep the points close. This is our first chance to see how the tire penalty will play out, should be interesting how it affects pit strategies.

I'll be there. Going to do some practice today to figure out if i need to make any tuning adjustments.

36 laps should about do it. Lap times range from 1:35 on softs to 1:40 on hards. Nic and I ran a quick 10 lap practice race last night. We were able to catch each other in the draft. I think I had a little more speed in 5th/6th for a slingshot move in my NSX but he's got more grip through turn 4. I might mess with my camber one more time before the race to see if I can improve that corner.

A few notes about the track...

cctrtokyoroute246au5eq0.gif

Turn 1, Lap 1: The last race looked pretty clean at the start but its always good to remind drivers about driving safe at the beginning of a long race. There is quite a bit of straight between the start/finish and turn 1. If you force a 4-wide situation by trying to pass a bunch of cars before you get to turn 1...you will likely cause an accident. In any case, drivers on the inside need to brake early. Drivers on the outside, should plan to take a wide line because there will most certainly be someone inside of you (if not two or three). Stay wide and you'll have a better position for turn 2.

Turn 2: Please don't clip it...for the sake of everyone behind you, learn the width of your car so you don't get jammed up on the inside barrier.

Turn 6: No matter what tire you have on...it IS possible to take this turn without braking. Figure it out... because if you brake...you are going to get rammed by someone who properly knows how to take the line. Also note that attempting a pass before the turn is a huge mistake. There isn't enough room between 5 and 6 to draft pass and you do NOT want to run 2 wide through 6.

Turns 8-9: Unless you get a major jump out of 8...there is no room to pass on this stretch of sequential turns. If you try to get along side someone, you will only slow down both cars. The entire track is required so just back off and wait to make a move at turn 10 or draft pass on the straight.

The Draft: Drafting changes a lot on this track. You'll have to brake harder or lift off the gas before braking to adjust for the additional speed you get in the draft. A few places to watch out for are:

Turn 4: When your opponent hits the gas, you can hit the gas...but you can't run wide open. If you do, you'll hit the wall on exit. Also watch out for your opponent hitting the wall. If you are on his bumper and he scrapes the wall, you'll ram him and give both of you damage.

Turn 6: Try to match your opponents speed before entry, otherwise you'll have to tap the brakes slightly...which may upset your suspension, thus ruining the no-braking technique. Also, as tires wear down you may need to lightly tap the brakes anyway for this turn. This turn will ruin someone's race before the 36 laps are over.

Turn 8-9: With fresh tires you can pretty much run this WOT...except when you are drafting someone. It will feel like you don't have as much grip...but in fact it is just because you are traveling faster than your opponent. You have to turn in earlier for each of the bends to compensate for any additional understeer you may experience from the increased speed. As I mentioned before, its not a good passing spot. In the likelyhood that you do make a pass, you've slowed yourself down to allow someone behind to catch you. With the long straight just one corner away, the last thing you want is another drafting partner.

Chuyler, great write up! Everyone should read this. Would you be interested in making a race preview every week? I'll post it on the first page.

Sure. I'll write one up if I get practice. I try to do it for my other series just so that drivers make it through the first few laps. Sure I'd like to win...but I'd also like to compete, and if half the field is taken out on the first lap, what fun is that?

Not much traffic in the thread, hope that there's more than chuyler and myself on track tonight. As mentioned in the OP, races will now always be in my lobby. Chuyler will be the host again, so when he shows up we'll all leave and re-enter.

Nicktune and i did some practice last night so we could work out our strategy for being handicapped with RH tires at the start. Run fast and clean and you won't have to worry about us...but start making mistakes and you can be sure to see us in your rearview.

For tonight....

Around 10:55 eastern (8:55 west coast), I would like to run a quick 2-lap warm-up. Everyone please have RM tires on before then (except myself, Nic, and Drex who should be on RH). Treat the start of this race like the real thing. Figure out how to negotiate turn 1 and go from double file to single file. Use the remainder of the race to learn the typical braking points when traveling in a pack. As well as take notes on your transmission settings for drafting other cars. Also take note of Nic, Drex, and myself...we will be braking early on our tires so to avoid punting, you may want to run a different approach to hard braking zones. Likewise we will be working out how to follow you without bumping you.

After the warm-up race, qualifying will begin. Again, make sure you are on the correct tires before entering the track.

Race should start at 11:10 East coast (8:10 West coast).

If you are not in the lobby by then, you have missed the race. You may try to enter once after 11:10 if your intention is to watch the race...but do not try to enter in hopes that we haven't started the race...and do not try to enter the room over and over again if you have trouble staying in. It is very distracting to drivers to see messages pop-up as they are nearing the apex of a blind corner.

What he said, lol. Except we'll do the practice start at 10:50. This way there's time to adjust settings before qualifying. Same as every week, at 11 I'll start qualifying with a 12 min timer. No one should try to join the lobby after 11:10 EST.

Alright guys, I'm going to drop out of the series as I'm starting Uni next week so there's no way I can be doing an all nighter every Tuesday.
I know from the Practice races at 'Deep Forest' & 'Laguna' there's a bunch of guys who could win the series, so I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread!
Wish you all the best of luck!
Have fun!!
👍

Sorry to hear calum, but thanks for letting me know.

I've been practicing for a little while now and I'm really struggling with turn 6. It seems that whenever I make it, it's so close breaking loose or hitting the wall. I'm just lifting the throttle mid turn. On mediums I'm going to have to brake a little, it's not worth the risk trying to nail it flat out.

Got rammed on lap 2, had to pit. Hit the wall after I exited the pit, had to pit again. Had a good little run with spotly(-1lap), gave him a tow or two. But it just wasn't worth another 30mins being that far behind.

Someone post results, both boshuter and lucky were not on my screen.

I hit u on lap 2...sorry about.that, it was an accordion effect, some hit me and I ended up hitting you

It's alright, if I didn't screw up coming out of the pits I would've still been in it. At least half the field pitted in the first few laps.

Tokyo R246 Results:

1. Chuyler
2. Spolty
3. GreyFox
4. Nic-KL
5. TheDude
6. Deathbyrotor
7. Sassafrass
8. Tr1mble

I was the one that bumped you Tr1mble. I don't know whether you checked up or braked but your car slowed down right in front of me. Its was significantly before the brake zone for the upcoming corner. I apologize for the incident but I'm still confused on what happened there.

I'll havta check my replay when I get home from work, but if I remember correctly we were in the uphill part going into turn 6,pope was on the right side of the road and I was on the left, then he swung to the left in front of me to take the right turn and I got caught in his draft right b4 my braking point so I hit the.brakes a little earlier because I didn't want to slam into the wall....
I was just trying to be a little cautious with the tight track and the walls...and the fact this was the first time I played GT in over a week....was to busy with dues ex lol

Turn 6 is certainly tricky. I'll upload some video today of some of the battles I had along with my 1:35.003 best lap on RS tires. Flat out through turn 6. The trick is to treat it like just a left turn, not a right/left. To do that, you approach from the center and skim the right side rumble. Then you cut the wheel left early to setup the suspension. Aim for the left side barrier and your speed will carry you past it without clipping. If you flick the tail properly, your car will never plow into the barrier on exit, and if you do make contact, it'll be parallel with the side of your car and not cause damage. Mess with your aero settings to get better high-speed balance if your car plows.

Race Report:

Nic and I ran practice races the previous night to figure out a strategy for the RH tires. I had no problem making it around the track and running consistent laps. The only problem was they were 2 seconds slower than RM tires. The grip just isn't there and lap times reflect it. Every lap I stayed out, I'd lose 2 seconds to the leaders and I wouldn't be able to pass any slower drivers on RM tires. As a test, Nic ran 12 laps on RH tires and I pitted on lap 1 and chased him down. It only took until about lap 8 to catch back up, and then by lap 12 I had pulled a 20 second lead. So obviously it was better to just mount the RS tires right at the beginning. We would still have to make back 10-15 seconds on the leaders using a 2-pit strategy but at least we'd be away from the carnage at the beginning of the race.

So come race day, that's exactly what we did. I think I qualified 6th and Nic 7th. He got around me on turn 1 when I played it safe on the inside. We stayed pretty close to 2nd-5th on lap 1 but the lead car was already 5 seconds ahead. I entered the pits on his nose but my autopilot was afraid of hitting other pit crews and it cost me a good 2-3 seconds. I caught Nic pretty quickly and he let me by, maybe because of damage, I'm not sure.

Laps 2-12, things were going as planned. At the start of lap 3 I was 35 seconds behind. As the leader's RM tires faded I was able to make back my projected 20 seconds from my pit stop putting me just 14 seconds behind the leader. The longer they stayed out, the better my chances were. I even passed a few cars during this stint including Sass and theDude. My pass on sass was a bit rushed and I was pretty aggressive entering turn 6. I got around theDude with a good run off turn 8. My semi-fresh RS tires were too much for either of them to keep up. I didn't want to spend any time waiting around. I needed to keep my lap times up if I was shooting for the podium.

I made my second pit stop on lap 13. The leaders had already made their stops but I stayed out an extra 2 laps since my times were still reasonable. When I came out, spolty was only a few seconds ahead of me in 3rd place. I got a great draft up the straight at the start of lap 15 and after two pass attempts I finally made it stick with an inside dive on turn 5. However it took several more laps to shake his tail. I was pushing too hard trying to build a bigger gap and each lap I'd make a big enough mistake for him to draft and come along side me by the end of the straight. With my help, he ran the fastest lap of the race. I was running low 1:55s and using my draft he pulled off a high 1:54. During that time, I think GrayFox and boshuter had an altercation because the next time I looked at the scoreboard I was in 1st.

Lap 26 I made my 3rd and final pit stop. I continued to run quick laps but as my tires faded I noticed GrayFox was actually gaining time on me. At one point he was running 1 second faster through the first sector so I kept seeing my gap go from 14.5 at the start/finish to 13.5 at the first sector. I pushed harder and at one point the gap was 11.0, but then I think his tires started petering out because the splits started increasing during the final 2-3 laps.

PS, congrats to everyone on a clean incident free lap 1! I watched the replay from several angles and everyone did a great job of getting into turn 1 without contact.

Race video. I cut out some of the boring laps. Lap 4 was my fastest lap if you want to take notes. I guess I wasn't completely flat out through turn 6. I lifted slightly to shift the weight of the car forward. If I were qualifying, I might have risked it, but during the race I play it a little safe. Only when I saw the exit did I get back on the gas. As tires wore down, I lifted more and more through that turn...but I never hit the brakes.

Just reviewed the replay and here are some incidents that deserve some discussion.

Sassa - Coming out of the S turn going up the hill on lap 2, I made contact with Tr1mble. In the replay he let out of the throttle well before brake zone for the upcoming right hander because Pope was on the right hand side of the road. I closed up on him so quick, made contact and he went careening into Pope. I'm really not sure what I could have done to prevent the contact because of the speed we carry going into turn 6 before braking.

Chuyler - After a stop for soft tires you eventually caught up with me on lap 8. You made contact moving me out of your way. TheDude was right in front of me and you caused yourself and him damage by going two wide in one of the narrowest parts of the track. I'm just not sure why contact was made in either situation. You were obviously faster but the car ahead has rights to the track as well. Especially on a track with a long straight tailor made for passing. Maybe just a little more patience next time.

Pope - Around lap 15, Lucky had come up on the outside of you going into turn 3. I'm not sure if you knew he was there. He may have snuck up on you. Either way, you continued to battle with him until you ultimately straight lined a corner and took him out. You were a lap down at the time. I realize this track is narrow and it is difficult to find a place to get out of the way. But you never gave him a chance to pass. I think Nik-KL was in there too somewhere. Lapped traffic must give way ASAP. And the rest of us need to be a little more patient when passing lapped or damaged cars and give them a chance to make way. Pope, you also left the race. You were the one that said not to leave races.

Lucky - You had the most unlucky race ever. The incident with Pope and then the incident with boshuter. The only thing I didn't like was the bump drafting on Drex. You literally were on his bumper for three laps and bump drafted down the front straight each time. It eventually got both of you damaged. I totally understand the theory behind what you were doing but lets just go ahead a make the pass. I didn't see you do that to anyone else. You were a victim of circumstance in this race. Wrong place, wrong time, everytime.

Boshuter - You were having a pretty good run til a massive off all by yourself. You let the traffic go by then tried to turn around. Sideways in the middle of the track more traffic came and Lucky nailed ya. I could see that the track map was cut off right there so you couldn't see cars that were coming until they were pretty close. Tough situation. Just make sure to get to the pits next time instead of parking. I know your car was probably pulling all over the place which makes it almost impossible on such narrow track.

This is a warning for everyone on this list. Whether it was an accident, racing incident, impatience, etc. We have time penalties for a reason and these replays will be reviewed. I'm not here trying to tell anyone how to drive, I'm pointing out really obvious things that happened in the race. A monkey could have pointed these out. Some were more sever than others. It's really not about the result of what happened on track, it's about decisions that were being made. I think most of these were racing incidents. Most of them.

hey sassafrass thanks for reviewing the replay but that was enough for me im completely done with this series i will send you a couple invites to series where you can race cleanly not saying that everybody in this series can't race cleanly but there is more then a person or two in this series that should sell GT5 or just give it to the 7 year old next door because he would be a better driver. no practice and trying to race clean just don't go together as most of us already know hopefully for the clean racers in series changes will come and your guys season won't be for not good luck to the clean and to the dirty 🤬 you and have a nice day
