Plus, using any image quality filters like FSAA and AIF KILLS the framerate. ATi cards only take a small hit when adding these features. đź‘Ť That's why I'm going for the X1800XL. The 7800GT has more raw power and yields higher framerates, but the X1800XL excells in AIF and FSAA. They're better at it, and still run hella fast with it on. Putting that stuff on is essentially free. All thanks to the Adaptive Anti-Aliasing and ringed memory bus-thingy.

Well when I have a NVidia Sound Card, nForce 2 chipset, and 1 AGP 4x/8x slot, I am pretty much stuck to NVidia.

I had that too until I got an X-Fi, and my 9800Pro was great! My nVidia chipset and ATi never fight... They're not supposed to.

I dont know why people get the Nvidia 6 series. Dont artifacts and things popping up bother you? Or did Nvidia fix this with some drivers?

I haven't noticed any artifacts or anything with my Gigabyte GV-N66T128VP ... or any other computer I've installed 6-series cards into (many) ... So what the hell are you talking about ?

I got an ATI Radeon x550 with 128mb of ram.... its middle of the road and does the job.... Plays new games like NFMU quite well with my athlon 64 3200. I dunno much about graphics cards.... is this one any good?
 
I have a Radeon X850XT, which I purchased a few months ago, and at the time of purchase was their flagship card. I hate the speed at which technology moves sometimes. :indiff:

If nVidia made their nForce chipsets purposely troublesome with ATi cards, nVidia would be slapped with a lawsuit so quick it's not funny. Messing with universal buses like AGP and PCI-E is unacceptable.

Put simply, shadows = kill framerate.

They have to be constantly recalculated, taking into account lighting and other variables that will skew or distort the shadow. So, just rendering shadows is hard work for the video card. Soft shadows go beyond that and on top of all of this, smooth them out. No matter how fast or awesome your rig is, soft shadows will hit your framerate hard. Don't expect to run F.E.A.R with soft shadows and all the other goodies like volumetric lighting (unless you have a bleeding edge computer).

So after saying that, I'd still go with the X850XT. Especially considering you're comparing an X850XT to and X800XL. ATI cards marked XT are the fastest in that line of cards. An X800XT is faster than an X800XL, and likewise X850XT > X850XL. An extra 256mb of VRAM will provide minimal performace increase.

I got my X800XT PE (PCI-e) over a year ago, when it was also flagship :(.

BTW I play FEAR fine with shadows.

My card is a GeForce 4 onboard. Leaving out the fact it's over 5 years old, it's ONBOARD, has 64 MB of VRAM, and can't even play most games without lagging on low settings. To my surprise HL2 never lagged. But then again, the Demo had minimal SMOKE. Smoke murders my video card hardcore. Quit complaining before the video card god comes and gives you my Onboard in trade for your X800XT
 
:indiff: they're the ones that say a $200 card won't do jack squat... I just want to have a card... hell a puter... that will be more than enough to handle FEAR. :grumpy: :banghead:

Yes but they paid top dollar for them only to have them replaced by newer better models in a matter of months (for a similar price of what they paid for their graphics card).
Sigh, I guess I'll be waiting for late January/February to get a new computer (X1900 XTX comes out then).
 
DODGE, You don't have to be a genius to figure this out:

Every bit of new technology will probably get replaced in the next 6 months. Technology is always evolving, video cards especially. There will be a bigger, badder, better one in the next 6 months to a year. You can't expect to pay $500 for a video card and have the best one forever. Technology becomes outdated. Everybody knows that.

Yes, that was sarcasm. And I have no choice but to get a PCI card or get a new mobo... which I will then get a new CPU... and a nice mobo and then want better RAM and end up with a new comp. Yay for 512MB RAM at PC2100. BAH!
 
HIS IceQ 9800Pro 128mb, a bit out of date now, but this particular card was one of the best 9800Pro's there was when it was new, as long as I can play CS:S on highest settings with a little AA I don't care.

I'm still using my MSI Nvidia GeForce4 Ti 4600 128Mb. Plan to upgrade to a 6600GT as soon as possible. ;)

It's probably tons better than an MX 64 MB onboard, but you're still going to notice a BIG difference. My GF4 MX to Radeon 9550 256MB switch was amazing. But I guess I can see why people whine about not having top of the line cards...I'm already b****ing about why my card lags in some games :lol:. Still, I am greatful I got it for $80 and it works a magic like I never knew.
