Forza Horizon 5 Season Change: Nine Lives

Another set of Forza Horizon 5 Playlist events is now available, with the final set of challenges for the current Series giving players one last chance to pick up all the rewards.

Series 9 has been celebrating Hot Wheels, ahead of launch of FH5’s first DLC expansion pack; if you haven’t already guessed, that’s also Hot Wheels.

A lot of the events therefore are themed around the famous diecasts. As well as new, exclusive Playlist vehicles from the Hot Wheels Garage, the events feature cars that have been part of special Hot Wheels collections.

That includes the Playlist rewards each week, as well as the overall Series rewards — and an appropriate Expanding World Accolade for completing your virtual toybox collection.

Series 9

The final week of the Series means a final chance to scratch together the points required to win the two reward cars — although if you don’t already have one of them you won’t be winning the other!

Although neither of the cars are exclusives, you can’t buy them either — they’re rewards, Wheelspins or Forzathon Shop items only. That means winning them during S9 will save you a lot of time, or money spent in the Auction House.

The Corvette-based Twin Mill is the 80-point reward car, whipped straight from the Hot Wheels Garage.

It features a pair of 502ci Chevrolet V8s — hence the name — which are then supercharged just for good measure. That means 16.5 liters and 1,400hp, making it quite… exciting to drive. Especially in cockpit view, with the two huge ram scoops obscuring much of the world.

Rack up the higher target of 160 points — which was technically possible on Tuesday — and you’ll win the Dino 246 GT.

While often referred to as a Ferrari, including right here in FH5, the 246 GT was sold as a Dino branded vehicle. This was intended to be a junior marque to Ferrari, allowing people to buy into the family at a lower price point.

The Dino brand was named for the Dino V6 engine that powered the cars, which itself was named for Alfredo “Dino” Ferrari, Enzo’s eldest son, who played a key role in designing it.

For the 246 GT it was a larger, 2.4-liter version of the V6, replacing the 2.0-liter of the visually very similar 206 GT. The 246 had a less expensive steel body, adding weight compared to the aluminum 206 GT, with the 2.4-liter engine providing more power and torque to compensate.

Spring will bring Series 9 to an end at 1430UTC on Thursday July 21, with the Summer season of Series 10 — “Horizon X” — replacing it.

Spring

Quirky is the best way of describing Spring’s Playlist rewards, with an Exclusive car from the Hot Wheels Garage at the lower 20-point threshold and a previous Playlist Exclusive for 40 points.

Naturally the first of the cars is a Hot Wheels model. Based on a Nash Metropolitan economy car, the “Nashole” — although it’s referred to as the “Nash” or the “Metro” in the game for reasons of politeness — won the Hot Wheels Legends Tour in 2019.

That earned it a diecast version of itself, but the real thing sports a five-liter Chevrolet V8 good for 350hp or so — about ten times what the original Mini-derived engine produced. While it’s a solid 400lb heavier than the original, it’s still markedly quicker.

As with last week, you’ll need access to online multiplayer — PC play or a Xbox Live Gold subscription — to be able to score the 40 points needed for the higher reward.

This week that’s the Peel Trident, a second generation of three-wheeled microcar from Manx vehicle brand Peel.

The Trident followed the earlier P50 and is pretty similar in many respects. Like the P50 it’s a three-wheeled beast, with a 49cc, 4hp engine driving the single rear wheel, and a fiberglass body.

However, it’s longer, wider, and heavier than the original, allowing for two people to sit in it at once. That does somewhat blunt performance though, which is a petrifying thought given how quick the P50 already wasn’t.

Forzathon Events

You’ll be able to live out your inner Toretto with the Weekly Challenge this week, as you’ll be driving the Buick Regal GNX for Ultra Hot. Own and drive one to start the event off.

Naturally it’s all about speed thereafter. Firstly blast through any Speed Trap with a two-star-equivalent speed, then take the Regal to victory in any Road Racing Series event.

Finally repeat that feat but in a Street Racing Series event. Completing that will then earn you five points and 80FP (doubled to 160FP if you own the La Casa Solariega player house).

Weekly Challenge: Ultra Hot

  • Car: Buick Regal GNX
    • Chapter 1: Own and Drive the Regal GNX
    • Chapter 2: Earn Two Stars at any Speed Trap in the Regal
    • Chapter 3: Win any Road Racing Series event in the Regal
    • Chapter 4: Win any Street Racing Series event in the Regal
  • Reward: 5 points, 80FP

This week’s Daily Challenges are a little bit all over the map this week, so it might be best to tackle them individually rather than trying to complete them with other events. However a new one will become available each day and each is worth one point and 20FP (doubled to 40FP with the LCS player house).

The challenges start with the eponymous Hot Wheels, which requires you to earn a Hard Charger skill. This is a combination skill, consisting of a Burnout skill (basically spinning the wheels from a standstill) followed by a Speed skill (the first of which triggers at around 100mph for most cars) within 30 seconds.

Desert Rally follows on Friday. Win any Dirt Racing Series event using a Ford F-150 Raptor to complete this.

For Horizon Customs on Saturday you’ll need to spend 25,000cr on vehicle upgrades; as you’ll likely need to tweak a car for the PR Stunts this week, it may be worth waiting to do that until the weekend.

That’s followed by Kar Keepers on Sunday. You’ll need to earn three Clean Racing Skills — driving through two checkpoints without hitting something solid will earn one — in any races using the Volkswagen Class 5 Baja Bug.

Eurospeed starts the working week off. Earn the equivalent of five stars at any Speed Zones in any German vehicle (you might like to pair this with the Treasure Hunt this week… spoiler alert).

For Pole Position on Tuesday you’ll need to win any Street Racing Series event in a Rods & Customs class vehicle.

That leaves Sky Jump, and this one could be tricky. The description reads “jump a distance of 3000ft (914m) in any vehicle”, and it needs to be one jump only. Anything that can do 300mph will clear this distance at the Runway Danger Sign in one leap, to save any mucking about.

Season Events

For the single-player Season Events this week there’s three PR Stunts, two Seasonal Championships, and an EventLab challenge.

EventLab yet again heads to the skies above Gran Caldera — for the fifth successive week — and it’s a very familiar course consisting of quarter-pipes. However this version might be the most irritating yet. That starts with the description, which specifies A Class (701-800PI) cars, though the event is for S1 Class (801-900PI).

Hot Wheels Mountain Climb is an almost non-stop uphill slog, climbing up into the air on orange platforms. There’s several places where you’ll fall off if you don’t have enough speed and where the slope is too much for the cars including a trip through a satellite dish which has no traction at all. Not to mention the jumps that you need precisely enough speed for — no more, or less.

In the regular event the AI won’t even finish, but this is a solo run. If the final uphill climb proves too much for your car, you can actually fall off the track with precision and land on half of the finish gate on the mountain top. Get through it all and you’ll take three points and a Ford Mustang S5.

As usual, the three PR Stunts — this week a Danger Sign, a Speed Trap, and a Speed Zone — each offer a Super Wheelspin and two points for completion.

The Base Jump Danger Sign is located right next to the Horizon Rush Outpost, launching you into Copper Canyon. Your pace into the jump is limited only by how fast you can take the right-hand kink before it. As you’ll be driving a B Class (601-700 PI) Rare Classic, that won’t be very fast, but the 400m target is relatively gentle.

Copper Canyon also hosts the Speed Zone this week, Rio Fuerte (“strong river”). It loops around the the north side of a large, rocky hill, and you can approach it from either side. You’ll need an A Class (701-800 PI) Modern Supercar, and the 110mph target isn’t too difficult.

The Speed Trap is, Callejon, located in Guanajuato’s tunnels, but the best approach is really from the west on the uncovered streets — particularly at the high speeds involved this week. It’s a 170mph target, which should be easy enough in the S2 Class (901-998 PI) Extreme Track Toys required.

Both Seasonal Championships run a three-race championship against Highly Skilled AI, and offer five points for completion. To take the points and bonus prizes you’ll need to top the final points table, which usually means at least two race wins unless you get a bit brutal with the AI.

Exotics places you into A Class (701-800PI) Retro Supercars for a Road Racing Series event. Take the win to earn a Ferrari 365 GTB4 in addition to the points. Hot Tunerz is a Street Racing Series championship for B Class (601-700PI) Retro Sports Cars, with a Porsche 911 GT3 ’04 on offer for taking victory.

There’s two multiplayer events this week, requiring an Xbox Live Gold subscription on console to access — although you can play them with no additional charge on PC. The events consist of The Trial, as usual, and the limited version of Seasonal Playground Games.

For the Games you’ll be playing three rounds of just one game type: Infected/Survival. In this you’ll be on a team of up to six players against six other people, and the goal is to either remain uninfected by the zombies (you can cure fellow players, highlighted in orange, by tagging them) or to infect all of the other team.

Everyone will be driving the same vehicle in the event: a D Class (≤500PI) Volkswagen Desert Dingo Bug. You don’t need to win, just complete the three rounds, to take three points and a Ford GT70.

The Trial is its usual self, consisting of a three-race championship against “Unbeatable” rank AI drivatars: six players against six bots.

Each member of each team gets 100 points for each member of the opposing team they beat, plus 50pt for the overall victory. That means that it’s often best to help your team-mates pass the AI rather than chasing down cars ahead, as each overtake results in a 200pt swing.

The event is a Road Racing Series challenge this week, and the C Class (501-600PI) Retro Muscle cars required should keep speeds — and accidental team-mate collisions — down to a bare minimum.

Take the win as a team and you’ll earn ten points and a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro.

Seasonal Playground Games: Survival

  • Car: D Class, Volkswagen Desert Dingo Bug
  • Location: Baja Circuit
  • Challenge: Complete the Event
  • Reward: 3 points, Ford GT70

Challenges

Treasure Hunt returns to the list of Challenges this week, while Horizon Open — which requires Xbox Live Gold or to play on PC to access — remains as one of the three events.

Fortunately the Open event is relatively simple. You’ll just need to earn ten Speed skills during a Horizon Open event, so enter any that take your fancy and drive fast, for two points and an F-150 Raptor.

For the Treasure Hunt you’ll also be going fast, but in a more specific way. The hint for this week is “German sport hares are lightning fast, splitting any zone in three”.

Naturally then you’ll need to get hold of a Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk1 — known as the “Rabbit” in North America — and score three stars at any Speed Zone that takes your fancy. That will generate the Treasure Clue, a red circle on your map with the rough location of the chest.

This week that’s at La Gran Puente, specifically right under the bridge where it meets the hill to its north-west corner. Smash the chest to take three points and 100FP.

For the Photo Challenge this week, #StreetBeast, you’ll need to photograph any Modern Muscle category car at the Horizon Street Scene Outpost. You’ll take two points and a “Don’t Talk About Street Scene” Forza Link greeting.

There’s one last chance to complete the two Monthly Rivals events running across Series 9 too. If you haven’t already ticked them off, each awards a point in each season in the Series — backdating to the three previous seasons.

In each event you’ll need to complete a clean lap at the relevant Rivals time trial event, using the vehicle provided to you. How fast you go isn’t important; you only need to record a clean lap, so don’t hit anything that doesn’t move when you hit it.

The new Forza EV event — new to this Series, and focusing on electric vehicles — provides you with a Lotus Evija to tackle the Horizon Mexico Circuit. For the regular Monthly Rivals event you’ll borrow a Hot Wheels 2JetZ for a lap of the Chihuahua Circuit.

Forzathon Shop

This week’s Forzathon Shop looks to some Italian speed machines, with the Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder Performante headlining.

Based on the 570-4 Superleggera, the Spyder Performante was the quickest and most powerful convertible Gallardo, packing the 562hp version of the 5.2-liter V10.

The Performante was also the last Gallardo; two years after it was added to the lineup, the last of more than 14,000 Gallardos off the production line at Sant’Agata was a Performante.

You can’t buy the Performante in FH5, only acquire it from Wheelspins or event rewards — or of course the Forzathon Shop. Although the 700FP price looks a little steep, it’s a surefire way to add it to your fleet.

Also available is the Ferrari FXX. This track-only development of the Ferrari Enzo sees power rising to almost 800hp along with updated aerodynamics and a change to the gearbox program to allow for quicker shifts.

While cheaper at 300FP, you can pick up the FXX in the Autoshow for 2.5 million credits — so it’s up to you which is the most worthwhile way to own one.

Store items this week are the Hot Wheels Sun Dress and the Hot Wheels Flame Horn at 75FP each. The Wheelspin (60FP) and Super Wheelspin (150FP) are in their usual spots too.
