Gran Turismo 7 Update Confirmed for August 20: Three Performance Sedans, Caterham Returns

After an unexpectedly longer wait for more information, we’ve now got confirmation that the next content update for Gran Turismo 7 lands on Thursday, August 20, along with details on some of its contents.

Series creator Kazunori Yamauchi posted his regular teaser some ten days ago now, to inform players that the update would arrive “next week”. Unlike all previous occasions where this teaser has been posted on a Sunday, the update didn’t land in the following four days.

That perhaps wasn’t so much of a surprise, given that PD had an event broadcast coming up for the GTWS Round 2 races ripe for an update teaser trailer, but it didn’t happen then either. Today’s follow-up Tweet then is the first piece of additional information since.

Update (19/08): As the update video and announcement has now also arrived, we’ve added further information below.

With the covers whipped off we can see that our previous guesses for what the four vehicles might be were bang on the nose.

The appearance of a new manufacturer is always of more significance due to the rarity, and this update sees Caterham coming back from Gran Turismo 6.

Previously the brand, which majors on variations of the classic Lotus Seven in both factory- and kit-build forms, had only been represented by the Seven Fireblade, so the appearance of the 2008 Seven Superlight R500 marks an all-new car too.

Rather than a relatively torque-shy bike engine, the Superlight R500 features a four-cylinder Ford Duratec engine that packs twice the twist as well as another 100hp over its predecessor. The Fireblade wasn’t slow, but the Superlight hits 60mph in under three seconds.

Not far behind that in the sprint to 60mph is the far heavier 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6N, the latest N-model Hyundai from the previously announced Hyundai partnership. Using the same architecture as the 5N we already have, the 601hp (641hp with the boost feature) 6N uses a sedan body rather than the crossover style of the 5N.

Interestingly, the car’s dashboard is displaying numbered gears in the video above, which only happens when set to use the simulated manual gearbox. The 5N from update 1.55 doesn’t have this feature, so its appearance here is of note.

Finally there’s a set of Japanese twins, or rather two of a set of triplets, by way of two 1990s’ performance sedans marking a welcome return for two nameplates.

The Toyota Mark II only previously appeared as a fourth-generation X90 car in the first two games in the series, but this update brings the X100 model alongside the returning X100 Chaser, both as 1997 models.

Along with the Cresta (which isn’t in this update), these three cars represented different interpretations of the chassis for different types of customer. They were even sold through different dealerships, with the Mark II sold via Toyopet and the Chaser through Netz/Vista stores.

With both cars in Tourer V specification for this update they have the same 1JZ-GTE power-plant, with the single-turbo unit good for the maximum Gentleman’s Agreement output of 276hp.

Although Polyphony Digital did tease some upcoming content in the GTWS Round 2 stream, it’s unlikely we’ll see it in this update. The Mazda RX-Vision GT3 Concept Evo was a surprise announcement, and while it’s slated for an appearance in 2026 we’re not expecting it this time — or anywhere this side of December.

However we are expecting something more to come in this particular update, as very firmly hinted at by the unusual change to the format of the Online Time Trial this week. In short the new event lasts for one week instead of the usual two, and the last time that happened it preceded an update that brought a major physics change.

As today is the day before the update, there should be more information coming along in the next few hours that confirm more about the contents so, as ever, watch this space for all the latest!

Update (19/08): We do now have a little more information, although really it only pertains to the new World Circuits events for the cars and the inclusion of new Scapes.

There’s three new events, and they’re pretty much as expected: WTC600 at Suzuka with the Hyundai in mind; European Clubman 600 at Barcelona GP likely for the Caterham; and Japanese FR 450 at Kyoto Yamagiwa to suit the X100 twins.

Details on race length and rewards will not be available until the update and its patch notes arrive on Thursday August 20.

A new set of Scapes based around the town of Whistler in Canada is also included, though we’ll have to wait to find out more on engine swaps, new paints, extra/bonus/seasonal menus, and any other details — including the reason for the one-week time trial — too.
