Four Cars Battle on Gran Turismo 5’s Nurburgring

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3FNYJ2emp4

Here’s some great footage of the Nurburgring Nordschleife in the GT5 demo used to host the second round of the GT Academy 2010 competition. This race took place amongst the Portuguese finalists, and it’s a treat to watch. To compare it with the real thing, forum user CoolColJ matched the above clip with the following on-board lap from one of BMW’s Ring Taxis. Watch them both simultaneously to how GT5’s ‘ring compares… Thanks to Gaviao_pt for sharing this footage!

Feel bad for the driver of the red car :P so good to finally see some videos of gt5 being driven properly. Cant wait for this game to come out.

For the comments about the vegetation, you gotta remember the ps3 has only roughly around 512mb of ram, and compared to average gaming pc which has at least 2gb of ram and superior graphics cards (ps3 hardware is technically 4-5 years old, where pc isn’t a closed platform and is always improving), the ps3 doesn’t have much ram.

So for developing on consoles its kind of a balancing act of where you want to put more of the processing power to for the visuals aka the focal points.

Its obvious that PD has decided to concentrate on the cars themselves and let the scenery take abit of a hit, but you got to admit the car models are stunning and they are a major focal point.

Look at Need for speed shift or forza 3 and they have more detail in the environment but the car models themselves take a hit. So with the basic cardboard cutout tree PD are saving resources to be applied elsewhere, and tbh in motion your not gonna care about the trees.

Also what other people have been saying is true in that this is a commercial product which has budget and time limitations to keep with and rfactor etc are mods made by a passionate hobbiest who can spend as much time and resources as they want as they dont have a publisher to keep happy.

So overall the complaints about the vegetation is due to hardware limitation and time/money constraints, not PD being lazy

That was amazing driving, makes me want to get on GT4… I actually laughed when #4 re-took his position along Antoniusbuche, and I actually felt nervous the entire time. To be fair, I haven’t watched any kind of motorsport since the end of F1’s 2009 season.

  3. Machita

    @Flagmo-T,

Don’t start talking about the trees, if Polyphony Digital finds this post, they will delay the game for 2012 just to fix the trees, so we won’t see the game by the time PS4 comes out.

  4. Big Ron

if you are 100% correct, you would say, the red car was crashed by the camera car and lost a lot of time. but at the end, he came very close to the leading cars. so it is correct, that he was the fastest. but not fast enough :D

  5. yurinov

red car came last.. he punts the blue car at the beggining …so i dont understand why some people says he is the faster.. looool

  6. DarthStig1

The track appears to move along faster than in real life, giving a greater sensation of speed. The way the car moves/weight transfer around on the track looks amazing. Would have liked to see the in-car view. Only slight niggle is the width of the track compared to real-life – the cars appear a bit oversized for the track width, unless its just the cam angle. Nevertheless, can’t wait…

  7. James

Yeah, I can sort of see that tree spotting is going a bit too far…….

….but its PD’s/Sonys own fault. After 5 years, peoples expectations are bound to be so large; regardless of whatever domain these expectiations may cover. Meteorological or horticultural! Neither are mine, but each to their own.

We can’t even get Porsches, so the odd mis-placed silver birch or conifer is no surprise!!!! ;-)

  8. JT

I am shock! who cares about trees and vegetation… this is a racing game, not a botanical park. As long as the car handles and the race circuit compares the real one (straights and turns), I am okay with it.

  9. Big Ron

    @Flagmo-T

You can´t compare private modding project of the Nordschleife with commercial version. I think, Polyphony digital has better thing to do than counting trees and get the right botanic version for every tree.

Private modders needed, in most cases, over a yoear to UPDATE an existing version of the Nordschleife. So thex got the time to do everything right.

But as a developer, it is impossible to fully concentrate just on vegetation.

It is more bad, they didn´t create a race atmosphere on the Nordschleife, but the vegetation is ok for me.

Some of the users wrote, the use some trees as braking point orientation……????????? There are better things on the track to use than trees, at first the skidmarks on the road ;)

  10. 8@No$

Tokyo drift, I only say that the red car driver closed a gap of maybe 5-8 seconds, after he spinned off the track in the first turns. So his time from there to the big straight (about 17 km) was 5-8 seconds faster than the camera car, which did it in 7′ 20″. With some simple math, and the assumption that he lost 6 seconds there, he averaged 1.92 km/h more (141.01 km/h) than the camera car (139.09 km/h). So he was faster from that turn to the long straight.

great stuff!! Fun to watch, But!!!

I’m a little disappointed! when going in to deep with the knowledge of how the created the veggies/Trees around the track in the real world, this looks like they have a understanding saying, Just make it work, and well it does work. But It’s not the best piece of Nordsleife i’ve seen, as a Model/creative texturing, they have more or less used a big bunch of trees and just plantet where i looked good, there isn’t any system in the tree park around the track, and that’s mainly what Nordsleife gives Back to you as a Driver racing it, I’ve said it before, and this finally shows it..

This video shows it much better then the other Taxi thing, which is over saturated in the colouring, the man’s arms are almost red hehe anyway. this is closer to the real colours, and it’s about ½ year old, and Btw a great time in a Nissan GT-R.

    youtube.com/watch?v=I9KXIPCQYC4

Pd i love your work, but i do find some of your easy cuts to easy!! if you would like to create Art! then you need to step up your game a bit!! 5 years and still!! ? Gt5 Nordsleife is beautiful, but more a illusion then it should be in my mind..

I know I’m very critical, But this track has been done so many times, and i Must say, that even though that PD has the best equipment for creating it, and also playing it (Console), they skipped to go into deep with the most important thing for this track, The Vegetation!!

GTR-Evolution/Rfactor/more has lots of the trees correct, and also they have made 4 seasons of them, for you to choose from, and it looks quite amazing, and it’s done by Modders for free, what they dont have is 1 mill of polygons or more/deep quing cams, particle system, and much more..

PD Give us the game, or I get even more Critical on the your stuff.. hehe

I know guys you don’t like to hear this at all, and will properly Flame me hehe, well then we have more to talk about!! :O)

I agree Hentis, hood cam gives you a far better feeling of placement compared to bumper cam. I don’t really care much for the interior view as it stands because from my viewing distance and screen size, all it does is feel restricted rather than realistic.

  13. Hentis

The Ring was never my favourite track in GT4 but since watching various videos around You Tube from GT4 & GT5 and as well racing along it on GT PSP then I am along with La Sarthe getting to like the track. I only hope they also release the F1 circuit as well as the Ring.
The video was a nice little eye opener to what GT5 would be.
Concerning the custom jobs on the side of the cars. Isnt it something to do with the GT Acadamy logo and number of the car.

Bumper view is ok but since GT 5 prologue Ihave been using the interior view, I also use that view on GT PSP. Although in GT4 it was bonnet view as you got a lot more feeling for placement of corners and other drivers.

  14. Bernd

@Anthony – Yeah, and that’s exactly the reason, why I’d appreciate a real harsh time-penalty or a drive-through penalty for this behaviour. Seems, some people need this to learn to drive clean and fair

  15. squishydk

How can so many describe it as decent or almost decent driving? I was under the impression these are finalists, but with so many comments saying it was “ok-ish” it cant be finalist as theres a lot better drivers posting reply here :)

On topic – looked amazing, and if this is the state of the game atm, i would love to get it now, and get an update on missing parts from DL later on.

  16. Anthony

This looks like a really cool track. The narrow road will make it easy to push people off the tracks and cause a massive pileup.

  17. Azzer09

@TokyoDrift-Sorry for my language eariler, I just really want this game, I so passionate about cars & this game! I need a new car game, my last one was DiRT 2, that was such a good game tho. :D

  18. dearlybeloved

Just glad to see four players who know how to tackle the corners of the mighty green hell. For the first time, I watched a video all the way through and at times for me it was edge of the seat viewing. Great enjoyment for myself.

    Peace out.

  19. priesty_lfc

Great vids, imagine 16 players on that!!?! :D

one thing I did notice was on the BMW vid if you listen there is LOTS of tire screech! That’s one of the things people complain about but it’s there in real life so stop moaning!

  20. Dzidza1978

What concerns me is the drafting, it’s very announced with Z370, what will happen to it when there are more powerful cars!?

  21. TokyoDrift

8@No$, how can you say the red car driver was fastest when he came last?

As for the earlier comment about the racing line, I totally agree. These guys are supposed to be good, yet here they are racing with assists…

@Azzer10, watch your language. It’s never “comming” out, but it might be coming out this year.

  22. Rem20

I doubt the interiors views would effect the development GT5 much. No one should question the inclusion of the interior view, since it is one of the biggest things separating it from GT4. To take that out would knock GT5 into last gen status. Those views are one of the best things new technology has brought to the GT series. Finally a new level of immersion after ten or so years of waiting.

  23. GT Fanatec

Seems strange that these guys need a driving line to race, isnt the whole idea of these trials is to find a good driver? How is following a line and braking points going to achieve this?

  24. Dom

Yes, the drafting is way too strong. If it will be like this in the oval races, Nascar racing will be a major let down. And for the normal courses, drafting should be weaker too. Dear, PD, it’s not that they are racing with a yellow school bus.

  25. moxtau

Well the guy in red was the quickest with no traffic. And let’s hope there was no rubber band effect. The drafting in the straight seemed a bit overmodelled to me.

  26. jctraduz_GTPT

One correction: it wasn’t the portuguese event winner’s race; it was the other group.
We’ve recorded most of the 22 races, and both of them in Nur.
We’re still trying to mount and gather all the pictures and recordings of the event.
Soon we’ll have a complete record to publish.

  27. Viktor Navorsky

I love the interior view… some cars are better for racing, some other not… it depends of the position of the seat… and the windshield, but i think its aways challenging to race like that… cause you really fell more the sense of the speed and the bumps when you´re from the inside view… at least its what i think.

About the video… FINALLY SOME DECENT RACING … the guy in the RED could be more smart in the final straight… he overtakes too soon, leaving some room por the other player to overtake him back… anyway, very clean and nice race… HARD TO SEE IT ONLINE

  28. Mário

Hello guys I was in that race, the blue car. The track is completly amazing much better than in any other games I played, it was the most exciting race in the day. Anyway it was very hard to overtake and we had strict rules to not touch anyone so we were afraid of overtake and therefore very slow, the yellow car was a bit slower than the others and was in the first place so it was very dificult to drive faster since we coulndn’t overtake. I only overtook him in the last turns after the straight and won the race but it was very hard not to knock anyone out of the track we had to be extremly careful so we couldn’t give our max, at least I couldn’t, if it wasn’t the yellow car we would be gaining some time from each other, anyway it was a great race.

  29. Fredzy

Man those couple corners before the big straight are a killer. And he did what I often do there, so I feel his pain.

However, I can never attack those last few corners after the big straight as aggressively as that.. intense.

  30. 8@No$

The best we have seen so far! At last, pro physics and the ring! Very nice.. Nice driving too, congratulations to the finalists.. As for the red car driver, he actually was the fastest but it is one thing to concentrate on the track and try to close the gap and another thing to chase the car in front, be chased by the car behind you while having to watch for the bumps and change your racing line all the time, lifting your foot of the gas etc… Can’t wait for the game!!

  31. Drug

Not the cleanest or fastest way around the track, but at least decent skills. Obviously the guy with the red car was the fastest and best driver here.

  32. Dan_

Great video, I always loved to time attack the ‘ring, it was a little bit dissapointing because there’s no AI driver who can match me on it, but racing against talented folks will be awesome.

@Wardo – I always use the cockpit view, it’s not the best to shave some more seconds but it’s the most funny and realistic. There’s no correlation between delay and cockpit, if you want someone to blame, write to sony’s marketing staff.

  33. moxtau

    @wardo
I for one appreciate the modelling of car interiors and I always use it. Once used to it, it gives me a better feel of where my wheels are and what the car is doing. Plus it looks much better :)

  34. Peewee737

Awesome. Finally some decent racing. Let this kind of driving be an example for everyone who’ll race online with gt5. The ‘ring’ looks amazing. Give me some 20 cars and Nordschleife, and I would be completely satisfied with the game……

One minor complaint: drafting looks better than Prologue. But on the final straight, it still looked there’s a little too much draft….

  35. Big Ron

    @wardo
maybe you don´t use the cockpit view to race. But real sim racer do. I play GT Legends, rFactor or Race07 on PC and there is no better view than the cockpit view to get a realistic feeling.

So, it isn´t waste of time to include it. maybe it is the best, what PD could have done.

  36. TokyoDrift

@wardo, on the one hand I agree about the interior view, and on the other I don’t. I too use the bumper and/or hood cam when driving as you see more of what matters – the road ahead. The interiors look nice, sure, and we’ll all try every single one out when we get a new car just to see what it is like, but I’ll be right back to the other view for racing. However, are interiors the reason for the delay? I highly doubt it, because they largely have no bearing on the graphics, physics, and dynamics of the core game. Car modelers can just go off and do their stuff without impacting the rest of the development.

  37. S3 Racer

Ring would become too crowded. LOL

nice race except the beginning. The filmed guy seemed disappointed :P. I would be too, he could have taken it home.

was this the challange in the academy? Because no tt? The guy in the red 370z would hahve won time-wise. He closed the gap, so he was he fastest?!

But they didn’t do big faults while driving, ’cause everybody knows the pressure you would have during a event like this and then chased by other cars, can be the perfect opportunity to do some dumb false driving.

I would have problems ’cause i’m used to 3 pedals, so i’m not soo effectif with 2. (you see the guy doing heel2toe, maybe with 2 feets, but still,…. i do it very rarly)

  38. jctraduz_GTPT

It was wonderful to be there and watch all these pilots trying to get their best performance.
This was the first of the three semi-finals races and was run with the normal 370Z and Normal tyres. It was probably the hardest race of the day, but the most wonderful to see. The portuguese GT Academy 2010 winner was in this race.

  39. [The Stig]

    wardo just stfu!
Im playing this game only with cockpit view and I dont really want some doubt about cockpit inclusion from individuals like you!

  40. Machita

Finally, they let experienced drivers play GT5, had enough of noobs ruining the game.

By the way the RED car lost 5-10 sec after that spin, he gained all the back.

  41. Beast

That was nice to watch, and fairly clean although most of the position changes where through little love taps. That’s why we need damage, if damage was on in that race you can bet they would be even cleaner.

I don’t care that much about ‘aesthetic’ damage, but mechanical damage – abso-f’n-lutely. If you knew tapping/ramming the guy in front could/would damage your radiator, perhaps cause some water loss and an engine overheat, or bend your steering, or puncture your tyre I think most people would start respecting each other a little more.

    /rant

Nice video, gonna watch it again :) I was kinda hoping for the filmed driver to get the win at the last minute, but he overcooked it just before the straight. I know that feeling!

  42. Il Venturetto

I never complain about those videos where people spins and crash, but these guys really drive amazingly.

  43. MihaiF355

sweet, I can only hope that racing will be as clean (albeit for the crash early on) online…..i can already feel a 10 year old plowing into me into the first corner …..

  44. eternal

got 2 love dat long long straightaway that very fast left hander seams very difficult and scary to take ireal life along with the double ss in the last sector very technical very good driving

  45. Mic

The track looks much brighter and vibrant now. You an really see how the sun lights up the track and reflects off the cars

  46. Juniordee

Wardo, do you seriously think that’s the reason?

So you think car modelers are also programmers, sound designer / technician, etc and that once they’re done modeling they can start working on the programming?

Obviously PD works on more than one thing at once. The reason for the delays (there was only 1 day, and that wasn’t PD’s fault…Sony just wanted to make more money so they moved it after the 2009 fiscal year) are NOT because of the interior models (which I use and love). While the rest of the team is working on finishing the game, why wouldn’t the modelers work on more cars? Of course they could just sit there and do nothing and wait for the rest of the team to finish but at least they’re adding more cars and interiors.

  47. S13DRIFTSPEC

Looks like theres a GT logo at the side of the cars. Is this the first cutom liveries we have seen in GT5?

  48. P37Mac

The red driver looks like he would have had that one if he didn’t end up facing the wrong way after that crash at the begining. That was one hell of a gap he closed up. Great racing. Anyone know what they were running on? Looks like no Aids and R tyres.

  49. wardo

see what I mean almost everyone uses the that view to race… me included, the reason for the delays is the modelling of interiors of 1000 cars just for some eye candy that nobody cares about. this game would have shipped over a year ago if they didn’t waste resources on it.

  50. Spiegel

Oh man that tiny mistake at 5:45! The video is really awesome. And damn, the biker traffic on the second video is really annoying! =p
