Lucas Ordoñez to Join Jann Mardenborough for 2012 Spa 24h

Motorsport July 10th, 2012 by Jordan

As the Donington 6 Hours approaches this weekend, GT Academy’s inaugural winner Lucas Ordonez has added another 24-hour race to his schedule, as it was announced today that he would join the GT Academy Team RJN squad in the Spa 24 Hours at the end of the month.

Ordonez has already competed in three 24-hour races this year: Dubai, Nürburgring and Le Mans, so he was the obvious choice when Nissan needed an extra driver to race the Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 at Spa. Lucas will bolster the already strong line-up of Jann Mardenborough, Alex Buncombe and Chris Ward when he competes in Nissan’s GT3 challenger in one of the most gruelling 24-hour races of the season.

Until then, Lucas is fully focused on Donington Park where he will race in the second of the four 2012 European Le Mans Series races this weekend. Tom Kimber-Smith returns to the No.1 Greaves Motorsport Zytek-Nissan where he will race alongside Alex Brundle and of course, Lucas.

“I’ve never been to Donington before but I’ve heard it is a great track with some fast corners, which is good for our car,” explained Ordonez. “The weather forecast looks pretty wet at the moment but I think we showed at Le Mans that we can be competitive in wet conditions so that won’t be a problem for us.

“Our target is the same as ever; to go out there and win,” he continued. “I have two fast team mates, there is a good feeling in the team and we are all hungry for victory. Alex, Tom and the team are playing at home so I’m sure we are on for a good result.”

Tom Kimber-Smith is a fantastic driver, I’m pretty suprised he hasn’t been able to move of to LMP1 or at least easily acquire a seat in LMP2. How many times has he won class at Le Mans? I know the last 2 years with Starworks and Zytek but I thinks there is a third. To think, until Saarizan went to Toyota and Kimber-Smith got the Starworks ride he wasn’t going to have anything.

Kimber-Smith claimed his third Le Mans class victory in four attempts, teaming with Ryan Daliel and Enzo Potolicchio in Starworks Motorsport’s HPD ARX-03b.

Enzo is probably the best case or amateurs being aloud to run. When some GTE-Am driver goes injuring a factory LMP driver you can point to Enzo for proof that Am drivers can run and be competitive. If there was a driver of the race award at the Rolex 24 it would have had to go to Ryan Daziel, no question. I would leave the room for a minute and come back and just like that he had gained 8 seconds in everybody, and it wasn’t just once, it was all race! Had Lucas Luhr not damaged the car in the bus stop in the morning they would have won. And like I said, Tom Kimber-Smith’s record clearly speaks for itself. That Starworks team only formed like 3 years back as well. Their growth and competition level is VERY impressive and in my opinion their efforts with what they have and the time they did it in is more impressive then what Strakka has done, starting up and being competitive.
