Formula One and NASCAR Coming to Rocket League in May

Rocket League players will soon be able to get their hands on official machinery from Formula One and NASCAR as the extremely popular car-based game enters its third season this spring.

For those unfamiliar with Rocket League, it’s essentially part indoor football — but with cars — and part demolition derby. Players gather into teams of up to four and, with rocket-powered cars, try to outscore their opponents in five-minute matches. Realism isn’t high on the agenda, but the games are usually fast, frantic, and gravity-defying. It’s little wonder it’s one of the best-selling (prior to going to free-to-play) and most-played games across all of its available platforms, and it has a massive esports scene too.

The third season since that switch to F2P gets underway next month, starting on April 7. As usual, there’ll be even more of the game’s fictional vehicles added to the roster, contained in the Season 3 Rocket Pass, but players will also be able to add official NASCAR and Formula One vehicles to their garages. Along with the cars in the Premium DLC Packs, these will be the only real-world vehicles in the game, although early footage suggests a generic F1 car rather than a specific vehicle from the real grid.

Both the NASCAR and Formula 1 cars will be available in their own DLC bundles, arriving separately in May. Psyonix will also add a new fictional vehicle intended to compete with these cars, called “Tyranno”, which will feature in the S3 Rocket Pass. All content will be coming to all platforms: PC through the Epic Games store; PlayStation 4/5; Xbox One and Series; and Nintendo Switch.

In addition, the DFH Stadium will receive an update to add a race track around its perimeter. It’s not likely you’ll be running any laps, but it’s a themed visual update to the popular standard arena to coincide with the F1 and NASCAR vehicles. The new stadium will be available for private matches and freeplay, and appear in casual and competitive playlists when Season 3 gets underway.

There’ll be a game update at 1100 UTC on April 6, ahead of the start of Season 3 on April 7. The F1 and NASCAR content will be available later in the Season, during the first half of May.
