I think sales are high because the PS2, and original PS, have a very high failure rate, unlike Nintendo machines.

I bought two and the others were given to me by Sony. In fact, the debug is really a loaner. It's due for an upgrade this month.

So whats your relation with Sony

A lot of guys say that PS2 can't display 1080i. Probably right. I don't know.
But if I watch the pictures at:

http://www.thrillinghill.com/gallery/album217/480p_versus_1080i_2?full=1

It's DEFINITELY not just a 480p upscaling. The right picture does have a higher resolution and shows less jaggies and more detail. It must be higher than 480p, it must be progressive and it's not true 1080i of course, but a between 480p and 1080i upscaled version, I believe.

For all who are not having access to HDTV technology. I live in Germany and use a HITACHI PJ-TX100 Beamer (EUR 1.400) which is a true HDTV Beamer. I supports DVI, Component etc.. The quality blows you away. My PS2, XBOX and GAMECUBE are connected through a DENON AVR-3805 receiver by component and toslink cables. If I have GT4 here I will give a short repot about this 1080i thing.

With the DENON DVD-3910 progressive player and this fu**ing cool beamer the image on screen looks like a brilliant film picture. No jaggies, no flicker ... great details. Awesome!

See ya!

I doubt the 480p is upscaling in gt4 because if you look at the direct feed pics of gt4's menu screen, you'll see the res for the pic is 852x480p, that's the right res for 480p. 1080i in gt4 might not be true 1080i but it's up there. I would guess gt4 to have 1880x1080i either way, 1080i is in the res. Imagine a 960x540 pic being upscaled to 1080i, wtf, that'd be a diaster for gt4's looks. Gt4 ofcourse will have alittle jaggies because it doesn't have full screen AA but other than that, jaggies will be very less noticable.
gt4videoopt8dc.jpg

GT4's menus support 480p and look at the res of that gt4 screen.

In a german forum a member said 1080i is impossible with a device (PS2) that has 4 MB VRAM only and uses single pass rendering.

It's 1080i upscaling. Not true 1080i but still damn good. No one as of now knows the res gt4 renders, it could be 640x1080i or 1880x1080i, no one knows yet.

This converter only works with a v9 PS2 and above, so make sure yours is a v9 or newer. And I'm not sure if 1080i would work with it, and if it worked what it would look like.

I just wondered what would happen if I set the game to 1080i. I have a normal tv with my PS2 connected by RGB. Would it look the same as before, would it look different but crappy, or would the picture even collapse?

It will not work. Im using a xrgb 2 and tried to us the 1080i option. The picture is more crappy it doesnt even come out right.

I have been led to believe the photomode renders are 640 x 1080, I'm not 100% on that though, the 1080i is upscaling it does improve the picture but GT4's graphics are great as they are and the difference isn't all that much.

You know something, the photomode pics you and I have seen are 1280x960 but wouldn't the pics be 1280x1080i online if the photomode pics were in 1080i? I'm a bit confused.

I don't know, I've been told theyre 640x1080, maybe they are 1280x1080.

1twojay, thanks a lot for the pics 👍 👍 👍
Any news about the Spanish Cars? :(

So far Ive only seen the Cupra R and the Ibiza -normal street version- on it by Seat.

About 1080i
The resolution for the 1080i mode is typically 1920x1080, the thing is that all consumer video captures -like mine- are not HD enabled and capture only in SD (Standar Definition) So, to capture an image from the PS2 into a computer and get the actual HD quality here at the forums is very very difficult and hard to achieve (Unless you work in a tv channel or post production company).

I have to tell you, 1080i mode in GT4 looks amazing. Im also playing the Japanese version and I can tell that the 1080i looks way more better than the 480p at least on my Wega TV which is not native HD but supports 1080i, I wonder that on real HD monitors or plasmas the image quality could be better. I can tell you that the component cables are worth the value and if your tv supports 1080i its more than enough to enjoy the game with a superior image quality compared to SD and 480p.

Cheers!

That's because it can only handle progressive scan (it's not an upscan converter).

Okay, I'm going to post my thoughts on this after spending some time switching between all 3 modes. I have a CRT based television that will display both 480p and 1080i in their native resolution (unlike fixed pixel displays like plasma or lcd that convert any signal you feed them to the panel's native resolution). Believe it or not, the PS2 can output a 1080i signal, I never knew it could and would have believed otherwise if I hadn't seen it myself. The 480p in GT4 is a big improvement over 480i if your TV supports it, but 1080i is a very impressive step above that. I saw no decrease in effects or framerate switching to both higher resolutions. The game just looks much sharper. I don't believe that the horizontal resolution goes up (meaning it's probably 640x1080i). IT'S NOT UPSCALED. Upscaled video generally doesn't look much better than it's original source's native resolution. Owner's of HDTVs will be very happy with this game :) If you have any questions, please ask.

I keep telling 'em, but they just won't believe in the TRUTH :)

can you please explain to me... how 640x1080 is not upscaled video to 1080i?
thanks... if you can't answer i'll give you a hint, ITS NOT POSSIBLE. 1080i is 1920x1080i wich means 640x1080 is UPSCALED.

I don't care about numbers. All I care is what my eyes tell me:

This game looks GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD 👍 👍 👍 👍

I am going to be buying a TV soon. What should I get? I want a TV that supports 1080i for GT4. Should I go with 4:3 or 16:9?
This is the TV I have my eye on:

What do you guys think? I really only want to spend around $1,000USD.

I know nothing about 1080i/480p. All I need is a PS2 and component cables? Any info would be great.

Keep your old TV because many HD sets make games look very bad in non-native resolution. Get a high definition set for your HD video games and other sources. They'll all be in HD before the time comes to get another set.

For video games there is little advantage in 16:9 so you really have to ask yourself when you next plan to upgrade. For example, you can get a 4:3 set for about a third the price of the same model in widescreen. Would you prefer three-screen GT? I do. Or will you upgrade your TV in another two years or less with the money you saved now? I would.

You need component input as a minimum. Ideally, RGB should also be supported, and better yet digital video. But if you plan to upgrade in a couple of years then component will do fine for now.

If you have a PS2 and component cables you will be sweet for progressive scan viewing.

i hope i can buy the Pioneer Plasma PDP-435XDE and plug the damn PS2 on it... I know i cant use real 1080i... But anyway with some settings on the tv. You can get a better picture then the standart 480i.
So thats what i need to do.
PS2 with GT4 plug in to the PDP-435XDE set everything up. and connect the ps2 to the logitech speakers. And use the damn DDPLII.

So thats all i have to do... and then i wont go away from that. until i die!!!

Component isn't much used in Europe, or at least not where I live. So is it required to play games in 1080i? My tv supports Scart, RGB, S-Video, Composite and D-Sub. Just curious if there's any way of getting 1080i to work.

RGB = Component.

If your TV supports 1080i then go get some component cables. If not S-Video will be a great upgrade over your standard composite. Image is sharper and less bleeding of colours.

There's a difference between RGB and Component. The RGB signal does actually consist of components, but the standard known as Component is YUV, and not RGB. As far as I know, you can only get 480p and 1080i through YUV, and not through RGB.

I got a hd tuner in mine. Mine is a 42' zenith, widescreen. Think the game will look uber amazing on mine? I also have alot of other stuff on my tv that I can't comprehend, like dvi-hdtv with HDCP, something called calibration, and sadly, I know nothing about it :(

Check this link for information about ISF calibration.

http://www.imagingscience.com/

It typically costs $250+ depending on what signals you want calibrated. A basic color temperature calibration is probably what most people want. I will be running GT4 on a Sony 46" widescreen that supports 1080i natively. Even though it's upscaled, it should look better than the regular display. I am running monster component from my tv to receiver and ps2 component to the receiver. For reference, I have Soul Caliber 2 and it looks awesome at 480p and 16:9. Since it's a fighter game, I don't think they had to make any sacrifices (that I could notice) to get the game to run at 480p. GT3 looks really pixelated on my TV, and I think it gets worse for people with even bigger TVs. FYI, modern DVD players support progressive scan which is 480p. 480p is a HDTV resolution, though it's the lowest one possible. I recently watched Spider Man 2 at 480p on my TV and I was literally sucked into the movie the whole time. Keep in mind that older DVDs did not offer this encoding and thus Ferris Bueller's Day Off doesn't look as sharp. 720p and 1080i are the next resolutions and for those of you out there with HD cable or HD satellite you'll know certain stations are on one side of the fence (ESPN and 720p) and others on the other side (Discovery HD Theater and 1080i).

For those of you interested in more HDTV information, check out www.avsforum.com. I'm just happy they are offering upscaled 1080i and 480p. Anything is better than regular resolution.

edit: For those of you with HDTVs, check out this website. It's not a comprehensive list, but it's a start. http://www.hdtvarcade.com/ps2list.htm
