I've noticed in the past few issues of Autosport that there's a huge increase in Aerodynamicists jobs been advertised by the F1 teams. They are all obviously throwing a lot of resources at next seasons regulations.

I can make a paper aeroplane fly 10 metres, what are my chances?

Welcome to Israel, the place where Michael Schumacher is as known as your next-door Falafel guy. A common reply to my question of "Are you watching the F1 race today?" is "Formula What?"
Does Israel still have a ban on motor-racing? That would definitely hamper its popularity...although I've heard that some people are trying to get the law rescinded. I recall that a non-champ Formula 2 race was attempted in 1970, but it never went any further than practice. Authorities stepped in, and the race never really started due to the Sabbath, not helped by spectators and police alongside the track's edge.

Anyhow, with the exception of NASCAR, the average American still thinks Mario Andretti's still race-driving.

As far as I know, Israel never had a ban on motor racing - just never a law allowing it. Plans for dedicated tracks were scrapped because there were no laws or a governing body to regulate them (kart-tracks exist "for recreational purposes"), and organizing a race on the streets wasn't allowed, either. Rally-driving still existed, in a small scale - a few scattered events with little organization or support. About four years ago, a law was passed to allow motor racing, but nothing is really done to organize something at the moment. Israel's cities would make a great city-track - the roads are never built straight, there are offset intersections and elevation-changes...

Apparently there was an indeed an F2 race organized in a temporary track near Ashkelon's beach, but it was canceled when orthodox Jews protested, and the organizers deemed it too dangerous - the usual Israeli lack of respect for safety precautions was also a reason, with spectators apparently running on the track, and big crashes in the Formula Vee and Touring Car races that started on the same day. In today's society here, it wouldn't be a problem, as people are far less religious nowadays - if they can host gay-parades in Jerusalem, they can host races on a Saturday. The layout:

Switzerland had a Formula 1 ban for 50 odd years. The Swiss GP was held at Dijon in France and they had racing drivers such as Alain Menu, Neel Jani, Clay Regazzoni and many more.

Apparantely their may be rain at the upcoming GP. Are we ever going to get a normal race?

I'm still waiting for a downpour, much like the one in England except for the whole race duration, preferably in Hungary.

Vettel was pwning until about 3 seconds ago when Sutil went top, but now it's Nick Heidfeld fastest.

Seems that they couldn't catch vettel in the rain, now the track is drying and everyone who is out is contantly improving. GET OUT THERE VETTEL NAO!

Indeed. Vettel got a great bit of experience there during the drying conditions, meanwhile Bourdais was 6 or so places (and seconds) behind.

Edit: More rain possibly on the way.

The 4 germans on track are now P's 1 2 3 and 4, with Vettel in P7.
Hamilton has only done 9 laps with the other front runners having similar stints.

I think McLaren are holding out for FP2 to see if it gets dry. The track is just now starting to worsen and people are locking up left and right.

I take that back. Hamilton trading best sectors with Massa. 15 to go.

As Hamilton exits the pits

Nice 2 person thread we got going here actually.:D

I'm glad someone is up. I should be in bed so I can be well-rested for work tomorrow, but F1 is a guilty pleasure I'm willing to lose sleep over. Can always DVR the rest. ;)

Aww.. Kubica in the wall.

Massa is probably trying his best to prove he's not quite as helpless in the wet as he was at Silverstone...

One can only hope. It was rather embarassing to watch.

He's certainly bringing back some credibility at the minute, he's followed by kova, lewis and Alonso, raikkonen is down the board.

Apparently they're not dropping the idea, they're just not sure that it works for them.

I'd say that was pretty good ground for dropping the idea...

Anyway, my prediction:

Hamilton
Massa
Webber
Trulli
Kovi
Alonso
Kubica
Rosberg

What exactly is the point in Force India being in F1? Surely it won't be long until Mal sells the team. Can't see what exactly they're gaining from this.

One would think that with all the money he's poured into the team, they would at least do better than run 19th and 20th every race.

This is what hate about F1 now. Teams cant join and be competitive like they used to. I mean look at the 90's many teams trying to Pre-Qualify. Teams like Jordan who went on to become a good F1 team and then we had the teams everyone would laugh at.

I mean look at EuroBrun team in 1990.

Very impressive work from Hamilton. 0.7 of a second is a huge gap in F1 👍

(commenting on previous posts: Massa, in 2nd place, is only 1.3 sec ahead of both Force Indias :) )

Or, to put it another way, apart from Hamilton (presuambly on low fuel) the entire grid is covered by less than 1.4 seconds. 👍

Don't say that or he might realise. Then everyone else who isn't winning in F1 thinks the same and before you know it you've got 2 or 3 teams left running 6 or more cars each, like the DTM.

Vijay hasn't poured that much money into it - not far above the regular backmarker budget. Force India is hopeless from the start of the season anyway - the 2006 Midland only gets you so far - and their only hopes were beating Super Aguri. Next year, it's a clean sheet for everyone - that's everybody's shot, and Gascoyne has some skills when it comes to slippery cars.
