Right, Q1 saw some surprises - Jarno Trulli goes 2nd-fastest, Alonso 3rd, Piquet 5th!

Out are: FIF1, Aguri, Vettel and Coulthard.

Wow, awesome lap from Alonso. McLaren is definitely going to have a hard time now if Renault keep this up.

Let's hope Renaults race pace is just as good.
 
Alonso light on fuel? I'm not sure, probably, but Piquet did good as well...Alonso's fans will be going crazy tomorrow, but I don't think they'll be as crazy in the end, I think Kimi will take this one 👍

Kimi's gonna take it unless his car fails. And Alonso's chances of a podium are slim if he's as low on fuel as it looks.

Coulthard got a lesson called "How Ralf Schumacher felt last year" from Trulli and Webber.
 
Nice, such an intense session. Kimi struggled with understeer on his first lap then pulled it of the bag, meanwhile Alonso putting on a great show for the Spanish fans. McLaren and Heidfeld are nowhere.

Methinks McLaren will really have to up-game if they seriously expect to challenge for the title…

That was an incredible lap for Alonzo, i really wanted him to get pole in that second class car.

Congrats on P2.

Imagine the spanish fans if he was P1!
 
Oh man, I really thought Heikki would take a position away from Hamilton. Well done to Alonso. Hopefully, the first turn is a clean one tomorrow.

What a great qual session...i was as surprised as anyone to see Nando on the front row! was actually expecting at best P5-P6, whether he is light on fuel or not you can rest assure that he will drive the wheels off that car. It will be a wonderful battle tomorrow, although common sense says It's all Kimi. I only hope to see Nando at least on Podium, that will be fantastic. If only Massa can keep from running him off the road like last year then all will be fine.....Vamos Nano!!

He did a spectacular Q3 run and almost got pole, but punted of by the iceman. Yeah, most people would probably know that Renault were running light on fuel, but the position really is the key to the race. McLaren were awful and on row 3 on the grid and BMW is on their usual pace, but that is whole another story. But a good prospect for tomorrow......

In other news: Chelsea just spoiled it! 🤬 you Chelsea!!!! You will not get away with that win, Man Utd is going to be on top at the end of the day......... :mad:

Beautiful show by Fernando Alonso. Bellisimo. Lost pole by just 91/1000ths to a Ferrari... My thanks to Bob Bell, Pat Symonds & Flavio Briatore for getting the R28b competitive. For those here suggesting Vettel to Ferrari, please, he needs to finish a race. Darkfinal, thanks for posting the ITV snip "Alonso against 21 idiots". LOL. Nice position by Hamilton. Alonso might be light, yes. But I doubt it's too light. How exciting it is to have him in the fray. Enjoy the Grand Prix gentlemen...

'Exited' no. Excited, yes. Excitement has kept me watching Formula One for the past 10 years. According to your profile you were 8 when I became a fan of the sport, so don't explain to me why Alonso 'may' be doing a good job. If anything, it's because of much needed improvements to the Renault's, a light fuel load and Fernando Alonso's gifted driving. Though I'm no expert, I do not need 18 year olds explaining to me the in & outs of the sport. Oh, one more thing, 'ROO'. Don't lecture me on politeness. I've twice welcomed 'new members' in this thread alone. Why don't you do the same. And 'Metar', you're comment to 'Z' about his photo quality previously in this thread was arrogant and pissed him & me off. It's no wonder new members don't hang around long. News flash, I'm not going anywhere...

Not really. When's the last time someone in a mediocre car got a front row? I don't even remember.

There's three explanations for this:

- Alonso is better than everyone on Barcelona (which I would agree with looking back at his 2006 performance there where even Schumacher couldn't keep up)
- the Renault car is getting better
- a mix of both

I have to agree with the past two. For starters Renault did allot of practice at Catalunya and it paid off well for Alonzo. I really hope he can get a good start tomorrow and see if he can hold off Kimi for the entire race. What a boost for F1 that would be.

Umm, it seems your ranting every member that gives his opinion because they hurt precious Alonso. Metar only said that as an joke and i think he is right. These days if you type F1 in google, you get high quality pics.

And about that lecturing. Not everyone is 18 years and lecturing anyone. It;s just an forum, what part don't you understand. I love having conversation about even when there younger. Too bad you missed part:ouch:.

That's right - on a circuit as difficult for overtaking as Barcelona, positions in qualifying are key. Fernando may not reach the podium this race, but there's a very likely chance for a top-six finish.

It's not a B-spec car, it's just some aero- and mech-updates to the car.

I would be suprised. The Renault made some genuine progress, not all of it aerodynamic. The Barcelona package is very important, as it will be used in quite a few other races, with some updates.

Noone 'bottomed out at the 'Ring', tool. They 'planed out because only one team started with intermediates, Spyker. Charle Whiting mssg'd the teams prior to 'lights out' stating they may do so. Only Spyker chose to, resulting in their short-lived lead. The other teams took a chance, but pitted when the forecasted rain happened, 'ight?Furthermore, wets have no more "surface area" than prime or option tires, but full treads to channel water away. To start with them in dry conditions would result in rapid overheating. Hence the failed strategy. Same at Fuji for Fernando. I'll stop "ranting" when you ditch the pompous attitude. I'll have frys & a shake,McDonalds boy.
